RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wintertime...and the livin' is freezy

Looks like winter finally hit home, in Bend. Closed the schools. Colder on the way, as Steve said. Must be a huge, continent-wide, blob of cold coming down from the north. Where I am in southern Louisiana is forecast to have lows in the teens early next week. I'm planning to be someplace...

This lake is about 100 yards from my campsite. I suppose in flood conditions my campsite is in gator habitat. I'll try to not feed them.

So far, the NWS has only put out a wind advisory -- no mention of tornadoes. But AccuWeather mentions tornadoes... Dunno. By the way, the little creek visible down below, next to the deck, is not the river...but I reckon the creek course would be the route that flooding from the river would take.

And...the camp host just came around to make sure I knew about the tornado warning: midnight to 3am. He wanted me to know about taking shelter in the bathrooms if need be. We'll see...

So... When I checked in to Bogue Chitto SP, about an hour ago, they said, "We got a forecast that the river might rise by Wednesday. If it's lookin that way we'll let you know by Tuesday night and get you moved to the Upland section...Don't want you to float away " I thought that was downright...

I got a call yesterday from my neighbor at home in Bend telling me that the ground is white. Looks like a few inches more are coming up for Bend this week. Where I'll be in southern Louisiana tomorrow a few inches of rain and some wind are in the forecast. Beginning tomorrow I have a site in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Happy New Year 2024!

Down here in the South, where I'm wintering, it's folklore tradition that eating black-eyed peas on New Years brings good luck. I ain't superstitious, but reckon it can't hurt none. It didn't hurt a bit. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Phone photos

There are a lot of birds, especially water birds, here in the SouthEast. On a kayak paddle today on the Dead River and Lake Griffin (near Fruitland, Florida) I spotted this guy on the shore. I'm no birder, so I used Google Lens to ID it from my photo: "limpkin" Aramus Guarana. . Taken...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Escape Trailers for cold(er) weather camping?

Yes, I have had an Escape trailer since 2020. Mine is the 19-footer. I've spent 3 - 4 months each of the past 3 winters camping - living - in it in the South/East. I love it. I have not used it in any conditions even a little gnarly - barely even taken it off pavement. But it could, up to a...

"What the heck, Mark?!" Hold on...this is weather-related, in a nerdy-science way. I had some of these salted almonds in a bowl yesterday. I ate them and left the bowl on my camper counter. All that remained in the bowl were a few bits of almond skin -- and grains of salt. This morning I...

It strarted raining here last night and a warm rain continues today. No need for studded boots. (The biggest challenge is keeping salt and sugar from clumping: dew point 63°F.) Not complaining -- it's good weather for reading... possibly outside, under the trailer awning. :)

Well, Mr. 3pin...76°...its more of a state of mind, than a feeling. What's disorienting is that just a couple of mornings ago near Savannah, GA, I woke up to a chilly 33°. And yet, this afternoon when I got to my new campground I had to resist the impulse to turn on the air conditioner in the...

OK... My title for this seasonal (meteorological winter) topic is a little weak, but I blame it on the fact that where I am now is not wintery at all. It's got me disoriented.

I'm 2800 miles from home having Thanksgiving with Carolina friends. This was living room pre-feast waiting...hungrily. It's nice to be far from home (traveling with my truck and trailer) and still able to spend the holiday with folks.

I want to see the sun rise out of the Atlantic. The only other time I did was in 2015 in Acadia NP in Maine. I'm camped near Virginia Beach, Virginia. A couple days ago I could have slept in until 7am to see the 7:30 show... But now I have to get up by 6am to see the same thing! My campground...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Autumn, Gottem

As a retired guy who can set his own schedule, I wake up and go to sleep when I feel like it -- regardless of the official clock time. So DST or not doesn't affect me much. But there's sure no avoiding the seasonal changes in daylight length and times -- the ones based on the Earth's tilt and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Current Spike in Gas Prices

In Elkton, northeast Maryland (next to the border with Delaware), regular gas was $2.97/gallon a couple of days ago. And it was that price at every station I saw on the main drag in that town. A few hundred yards away, across the border in Delaware, gas was 10-15¢/gal higher.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Advertisements

Since signed-in WTW members don't see ads -- and it's free to become a member -- doesn't seem like the ads should be a concern for "us". On the other hand, folks who come to the WTW site for the first time -- so not yet members -- may be put off by the ads. But I reckon that's a business...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Helicopter pulling wires, wow!

Very cool! It reminds of a similar operation I saw while driving on the Florida Keys highway, January 2022. A power pole next to the causeway, set in the sea bed, was being serviced by a linesman sitting on, tethered to, the skid of a hovering helicopter...! Requires precision and ballsiness...
