RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aphelion Friday

It probably comes as a puzzler to a lot of northern hemisphere folks: That the Earth is farthest from the Sun in mid-summer. Yup, it's all about the angle of incidence!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West And Suddenly It's Summer 2024!

Summer? Last month, when it was still [meteorological] spring, we had a few days of nearly 90F here in Bend. Today at 10am it was 60F in my house -- I turned the furnace on. :(

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Will a Snake Cross a Rope?

I like snakes. One of my bosses (back in the day) was deathly afraid of snakes -- so I learned: One day my boss came in my office to discuss something. She sat down then saw on my desk a photo of a gopher snaked coiled around my wrist and hand (from a visit to the Warner Lakes Valley, Oregon)...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Current Spike in Gas Prices

In Cusco, Peru, a city of 500,000 at 11,000 feet in the Andes, I'm seeing gasoline at 17 soles -- that's about 4.50 USD -- per gallon. Two surprises to me: 1) that the price in a remote area, not near coastal ports, is cheaper than places in California 2) that they sell gasoline by the gallon...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's Spring...somewhere

What's interesting about this place, Urubamba, in the lower Andes, is that even at 9800 feet elevation it rarely gets below freezing in winter. And the average high temperature is "temperate" all year. Seasons in this area are mostly defined by rainy or dry.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's Spring...somewhere

And at the same time, it's autumn... somewhere. ...Here in Urubamba, Peru, for example, at latitude 13° south. It looks like spring, but that's because summer is the rainy season here, so it's still all green. This is the backyard of my friend's house, at about 9,800 feet elevation, with the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's Spring...somewhere

Towing a travel trailer has made me a WEATHER WIMP! Yes, me! I pride myself on decades of experience safely driving in snow...including in my car when snowing hard and through deep snow in my truck. Certainly never bothered by high winds. But now, towing my 19-foot travel trailer, I'm having...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Total eclipse 2024

I'm not homebased in any totality state, but I have a place to view the eclipse in central Texas, west of Waco and north of Killeen. 4 minutes 20 seconds of totality. Through my affiliation with a loose group of fiberglass travel trailer owners, I got invited to boondock my trailer for the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's Spring...somewhere

When snowfall forecasts state "up to..." or "as much as..." I see that they're erring on the side of caution, warning people of the worst case scenario -- for safety. BUT: It can also lead to a "boy who cried wolf" situation. Personally, when I hear ".. up to a foot of new snow possible at...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's Spring...somewhere

Here -- at 30° Lat, 100° Lon -- it's not only the first day of meteorological spring but feels like 'practical' spring, too. It's 80°F. Now...with winter storm warnings and even blizzard warnings issued for the far West...well, that doesn't seem very spring-y. But I remember one Memorial Day...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wintertime...and the livin' is freezy

I figured you'd recognize the place. Distinctive mountains. Towing the trailer I can't get to my favorite camp spot here -- the mouth of Queen Cyn. But that's the compromise. And why I still have my pickup camper for more rugged destinations.

    It's white and getting whiter at my place this afternoon: Not a lot to come here in town, 1 - 3 inches off and on but with melting, too, but there is a Winter Storm Warning in effect, especially for the Cascades. Still a sweepable amount on my front steps;

SPEAKING OF WEATHER: I'm enjoying the Ventusky app for forecasting weather -- all parameters -- over large regions. It's helped me decide where I can go to escape "winter" (the conditions, not the season). It displays isotherms (aka, "heat maps") for temperature, wind, whatever... as well as...
