It's been raining here in Bend since the wee hours this morning. Of course, being the high desert, it's not going to amount to a whole lot of water. We average only 12 inches/year. But it's a good thing, nevertheless! :)

We've been lucky in Bend so far this fire season (knock on wood) -- no fires threatening town. But there has been some mighty bad smoky air. I've lived in Bend for 43 years, and it hasn't always been this way. Smoky skies are slowly becoming a late-summer norm for Bend KTVZ TV

Looks like summer will reappear for a few days early this week. Yeah, summer. In a normal summer it might never get hotter than upper 90s.

This forecast is kinda crazy: Portland, Oregon -- deep in the land of firs and ferns and marine moisture -- is forecast to be hotter than Twentynine Palms -- in the land of of Marines -- in the Mojave Desert!

It smells like smoke outside...and the air looks hazy in just a couple of hundred yards. Current AQI is 165 -- "Unhealthy". We've had weeks of wildfires in Oregon -- including the biggest in the country, but maybe we've been lucky in Bend with the wind direction in until now.

Looks the high Sierra Nevada range blocks the monsoonal moisture from the south/east better than does the considerably-lower Cascade range. That's my theory. ...which reminds me of this silly bit from Monty Python's FC.
