RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Summer Dayz

It's going to be unusually warm at night here the next few days. wunderground.com Traditionally, people in Bend keep long sleeves - even sweaters - handy on summer evenings outdoors. Many's the time I've taken a fleece pullover to watch local amateur/minor-league evening baseball games --...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West how do you folks 'claim' a campsite' while you are off exploring during day

I've used orange traffic cones. And there's also the old standby of a cheap lawn chair.

A friend of mine in Twentynine Palms (in the Mojave Desert, California, north of Joshua Tree NP) said they had big-time monsoon rain there last night. Seems like some of that monsoonal moist air has made it clear up here to Central Oregon. It's cloudy (at least partly) for the first time in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West And So They Continue........................Fires

Today it was reported that the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon was caused by lightning. Over 60 homes have been lost, and at 400,000 acres it's on track to be (at least) the 3rd biggest fire in Oregon history.

The forecast low for tonight is 44°F. That's kinda chilly. I'll still have windows open -- some of them anyway, but I'm not going to have a window fan running.

If the forecast for tomorrow comes true it will be the first day in weeks with a high temperature below the average for the date. Hmmm... Mutual fund pioneer John Bogle was a great proponent of the principle of 'reversion to the mean', the idea that all things will, over the long term, trend...

If I can be so bold as to speak for Milt (only because he may not check in on this for a while...): He's told me (and demonstrated once, in person) that he uses "water-color pencils". They're used like regular colored pencils (so more portable and "hardy" than water colors for camping) except...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Adjustable, Extendable, Telescoping Sun Visors -- Aftermarket?

Hmmm....why doesn't mine? Did I get the 'wrong' trim package?? Well, if they're available NOW or even back then, yeah I can probably get some official Ford sliding visors. Hope they don't require any Taiwanese chips....

My cheap little Hyundai Accent (2015) has a very useful feature that my much-more expensive Ford F250 (2000) lacks: Sun visors that slide on their shaft to adjust to optimum sun-blocking position. See my Hyundai sun visor in 3 positions: Ford F250 (2000) sun visor: Does anyone know of...

On the local TV news tonight they said that the Bootleg Fire, in south-central Oregon, is currently biggest in the United States. Over 200,000 acres...with no containment. I didn't confirm if that superlative is true or not...but it's not something to brag about anyway. :(

Looks like we, Bend, have at least a couple of days of near-normal high temperatures coming up this week...after several weeks of 10 to 20°F (and higher) above-normal temperatures. Normal high temperature right now is low-80s.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How to Dismount & Mount Pickup Canopy -- Solo?

So I hear. A friend of mine has had a chronic bad back, lots of pain, for a long time - one of an assortment of injuries from 20 years in the Army. One expert has told him - twice - that he's not a good candidate for surgery. "Try pain management" he's been told. Can you say "opioid"? I'm very...

Thanks, guys! I'm partial to the ideas that don't require "build", other than attaching eye-bolts and chain or cable or rope to lumber -- 2x4s and/or rafters. "...get inside the canopy and crouch in the middle of the canopy with my back against the top. As I straightened my legs the canopy...

This, just now, brought to mind an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation -- an episode called "The Inner Light"* -- frequently considered to be the best (or one of the best) of that series. It's sad and beautiful. What made me think of it was the theme of increasing heat and drought...

I'm interested in learning a way, a procedure, a rig that will allow me to dismount and mount my canopy (aka, "cap" "shell" "topper") on my F250 and do it by myself -- without anyone's help. It's an ARE brand CX model and weighs about 175 lbs (according to ARE specs). I'm...

I see pop-up campers (usually FWC, but some probably ATC) almost every time I drive around town here in Bend. Some of these are probably locals, some are probably tourists passing through. I spot 'em so often that I don't report local 'sightings' anymore -- just not special enough. It was...

I just paid $5.39 for regular at Fields, Oregon. I could have made it to Burns (where it would be $1.50/gal less), but I want to subsidize the continued availability of gas out here in the boonies.
