RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Chainsaw and FWC

Me too! Sioux LOVES her campfire. (And Dutch oven biscuits.) Plus it is a safety consideration when camping way in (like we do) on a dead end road if a tree falls blocking your way out. One thing that helped us was buying a very specialized small gas saw with a 12" bar. You do need to be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Flatbed Discussion

I think the idea was to use the 1/4" aluminum plate and then weld the nut to it after placing. But will check with my fabricator.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Flatbed Discussion

Thanks, Vic! We love our Hawk flatbed/ 2012 Ram 2500 combo. But we never carry more than the two of us so thought we'd keep the same overall length and put the extra space back into the camper. It will be difficult to say goodbye to the old girl- in five years and 30,000 miles she has never let...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Flatbed Discussion

Yes it is. The only good thing is after a year I got down underneath our Hawk Flatbed with a cordless impact wrench and the wife up above with a box end wrench and not one of the nuts moved one mm. So not too bad! I did run the reinforced floor and welded nut by Denny and he suggested we...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Which alternator set-up?

My Ram salesman tells me the dual alternators do not have an external regulator. Given that I am A) an electrical dummy and B) certainly don't want to mess with the electrical complexities of a new vehicle and C) the 220 amp alternator has been OK with my current Ram I think I'll just stay with...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Folding Solar Recommendation

OK, Vic, since you're one of the resident solar experts here I just (gulp) ordered a new Grandby flatbed yesterday from Denny! And I've finally recognized I'll likely continue a solar/electrical dummy forever. So I ordered it with FWC's standard 160 watt roof system. But I also have the Renogy...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Which alternator set-up?

So I am wending my way through ordering a 2018 SRW Ram Chassis Cab in a regular cab configuration. The multitude of choices is a mixed blessing! As of now: 6.4 Hemi (standard) with upgraded Aisin tranny, 4.44 rear end and dashboard shift-on-the-fly transfer case. Plus all sorts of creature...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help for a FWC addict?

Thanks, Vic! I'm not smart enough to "evaluate what I'm using now". Seriously. I do know now in my current Hawk I don't like "fretting" about it. Therefore my idea to go with bigger batteries given that I have the space and weight for them. But I know batteries need to be sized to the solar...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What yr did FWC switch power plugs?

My 2012 had the old style. My 2015 the new one. At least I narrowed it down for you a bit! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help for a FWC addict?

Yeah, the 3/4 ton and up Rams only have the regular cab and crew cabs. Used to drive me nuts not having the Super Cab option (so much so we've been looking at F-350's) but when i analyzed it I think the "garage" right behind the cab will do even better for us and the only things we'll be keeping...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help for a FWC addict?

What's the fun with that? :) Seriously, we just don't need the Crew Cab and want to put that space back into the camper. As configured the new build will be the same overall length but with the extra living space of a Grandby. Even though we've been delighted with our Hawk Flatbed... there I go...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help for a FWC addict?

Is it almost 2018? Then it must be time for my-every-three-years-order-a-new-FWC "fix". 2012- my first FWC Hawk (slide-in), 2015- new hawk (flatbed model). Both mounted on a 2012 Ram 2500 which honestly has done great and my wife thinks I am crazy to leave our FB Hawk. So what will be my 2018...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ISOTHERM "vs" ARB Fridge Efficency?`

So I don't want to hijack this thread but is the current Isotherm that much better/more energy efficient than the largest Dometic (was it 130 liter too) that FWC was using back in 2015?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How important are rear lockers vs. "limited slip"?

Interesting stuff. I just assumed I needed "lockers" but with all the input I see a LS differential maybe be better and offer more flexibility for the rear end. Honestly I've never had a problem in the last five years and we haven't been shy on the trails we go on.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How important are rear lockers vs. "limited slip"?

Thanks to all and much to think about. I'm checking on the RAM LS differential tomorrow. I was pretty naive and inexperienced five years ago when I bought the RAM 2500. And yet I gotta say it has never let me down! So whether I go with the Ford or the Ram would it make sense to stay with the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How important are rear lockers vs. "limited slip"?

So I'm torn between RAM (which I have now and am pleased with) versus Ford in my search for a 1 ton "chassis cab" in a regular cab size w/ a FWC Granby flatbed on the back. One defining difference is the Ford is available with factory rear e-lockers and the RAM only has a "limited slip...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Oven Range w/ 3 burners?

I'm likely moving up to a Grandby sized flatbed for 2018! One of my motivations (besides boredom) is I'd like to install a range with an oven in the new camper. Sioux LOVES fresh biscuits when we camp. NOTE: Yes, I know this will range cut out will intrude 17" down from the countertop into...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West King-sized Bed-slide for Cabover Bed?

We have the 1 3/4" Froli too. Sounds like I'll need to hack together my own version if I do anything. (I love a challenge!)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West King-sized Bed-slide for Cabover Bed?

Thanks, everyone. So don't you just use two seat cushions from your dinette to put on top of the slideout? (I hate extra bulk in the camper.) BTW, for those of you making coffee in the morning we bought a really good stainless steel thermos from REI and make up our coffee the night before. It...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West King-sized Bed-slide for Cabover Bed?

We've always made do with the east-west sleeping in our previous and current FWC Hawks. But far from ideal since we both get up during the night and seldom on the same schedule. So I'm thinking about ordering a new FWC Flatbed Grandby. Is anyone using the slide-out bed option from the factory...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West My FWC dealer went bankrupt last week, and I pick it up tomorrow.

Denny Saunders in Jackson Hole is 12 hours from me and is always available. when I call. FWC quality is legendary. Don't sweat it. Enjoy! (Sioux and I just got off five days on the White Rim Trail in Utah and had a blast!) Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

I agonized on this one. And I love the idea. But whether due to basic inertia or thinking better to keep distances as short as possible for maximum flexibility I weenied out and stayed with Labyrinth. But thank you and it is going into the future trip hopper!
