RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for camping spots in northern New Mexico

Not sure where Dixon, NM is but there are some nice boondocking areas north of Jemez Springs all the way up to and around Valle Caldera. (Gets busy on the weekends.) Also we really like the area south of Cloudcroft up to Sunspot Observatory.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

Very nice, CarlG. We love our Hawk Flatbed and you will too. I'm not sure how the factory mounted it on your flatbed but Denny and I used 6 Grade 8 bolts and lock nuts scattered all over the floor in hidden parts with 3" x 6" 1/4 thick plates on both sides backing them up. It will never come...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Carrying moto fuel with camper (no trailer)

I like this. Were you able to put find an aluminum "stud" there? How did you attach the holder? Do you have a link to where you bought it? (When we're going to stay in one place for awhile we carry a 2000 watt Yamaha generator and this would do nice for the fuel plus give us that little extra...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West TCs and Strong Winds?

I've only had FWC's but it appears that their soft sides are a good more deal "taut" than competitors. (This may be due to the rigid lifting panels at each end.) But I know our hawk Flat Bed may be swaying on its springs due to high wind but the fabric panels aren't flapping. And yes, MUCH...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Easy mods

Ummm, Bill. Before you start drilling for the paper towel holder we just use a 2' or so lenght of double faced velcro (hook on one side and loop on the other) and run it through the paper towel tube. It sticks together and keeps the towels from unrolling while we travel. (We keep the roll in the...

Yep, Jim, that pretty much sums up my LIFE! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Rear Sway Bar for 3/4 Ton with Hawk

So I would like to put a sway bar on my slightly overweight, 2012 2500 (non-diesel) Ram and can't find one listed anywhere. Any ideas? (Not trying to high-jack your thread, dasabab! But this reminded me of it!) Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 100 Watt Renogy Foldoing Solar Suitcase for an electrical dummy?

I really appreciated Jim's personal interest in helping an electrically clueless individual. Unless you are driving each and every day to let the engine alternator "help out" I believe he is correct on the need for roof solar. I love the convenience and reliability of the 110 liter Dometic. But...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Remote camping in and around colorado

To add to ski3pin's reply most dispersed camping must be done within 300' of the road. However, I've never seen a ranger with a tape measure...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Direct Bolt on Flatbed

An interesting concept. Are the frame rails on your rig flat? (Like on a "chassis cab) How did they protect the underside of the unit against weather and moisture from the road? If they've got it figured out it would have saved me 400# of aluminum flatbed and 5,000.00! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Concrete bed cushions

I've slept on framing lumber that was softer than the foam in my 2012 Hawk! The 2015 foam is better. Even so, we slid a 1" eggshell mattress topper from Walmart into the fabric envelope. Going to try it out next week during our New Mexico excursion. Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West off roading on steep inclines?

X2! And especially with a 10,000# pickup! I carry all the extraction toys including a 10,000# Warn Winch that can either be mounted hitch mounted front or back. So far I've never used it and hope I never have to. My best guide to where I shouldn't go is Sioux's pucker factor. Kept us out of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Mpg report

2012 Ram 2500 w/ Hemi gas and 3.73 axle. Now that we put the Flatbed Hawk on lost about a mpg down to 13 mpg @ 65 mph. My guess is more weight and higher profile than the slide-in hawk we had before. Still worth it.

Thanks, guys! I pulled the trigger on it. Still confused on the connections but will sort them once it arrives in a week.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 100 Watt Renogy Foldoing Solar Suitcase for an electrical dummy?

Thanks DrJ and the rest of you. I do have the SAE pin connector on the back of my Hawk. (This is standard now.) Guess I just need to (gulp) hook it up inside my electrical connections. Does anyone know if it should be wired to the fuse panel? I guess I can bug Stan...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 100 Watt Renogy Foldoing Solar Suitcase for an electrical dummy?

You folks have been kind and patient on some of my other queries so here goes: Sioux and I bought our Flatbed Hawk last year thinking I would "add" solar. Not realistic since I literally failed my high school electricity class 45 years ago. And I've successfully navigated life since without...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Can floor stringers be removed to lower Hawk camper ?

There were two stringers on my 2015 Hawk flatbed but we ordered them with just one. Then we filled in the remaining 5/8" space with 3/4 rigid foam and bolted 'er down. I'm sure you could removed at least two of the stringers. But call or write Stan. He is very good on requests. (Not so good on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Outdoor shower tent reccomendations

I'll take the slightly contrarian view. We had the outside shower on our first Hawk and did the pop-up tent thing. (I believe we bought it from Cabelas.) All good EXCEPT (and maybe it is due to the Colorado/ New Mexico mountains we wander in) invariably when we decide to shower it gets cold and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Truck ownership philosophy

X2. Despite my earlier "SKI" comment we don't spend money just to spend money. Quite the contrary. We still have furniture we bought used at a yard sale... 40 years ago to furnish our first apartment! BUT since Sioux and I travel alone into some pretty remote places my guiding philosophy is NO...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Truck ownership philosophy

I just spend. Seriously. At 63 and since Sioux and I both really enjoy the WTW lifestyle and so why should we leave it ALL to the kids? :) NOTE: We are frugal on other "non-essential" stuff. I feel there should be a brass plaque with my name on it at FWC headquarters! Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2012 FWC Hawk for sale (CO) SOLD

Order two of these and install a "T-bolt" in them. Screw one to the side of the camper and the other to the bottom of your table. Now git yerself a 1 1/2" conduit bend and you are done! Less than 25 bucks, the table swivels and folds vertically. Plus it is stronger than the FWC one in my new...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Why Can't The FWC Owners Get This Information ?

X2, Stan. You know what a Cheerleader I am for FWC. This is a simple request and would be of huge help for those of us who spend 20-30K for one of your excellent campers and then proceed to rip them apart to make "improvements". (Stan, wait till I send you photos of my latest modification and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2012 FWC Hawk for sale (CO) SOLD

I converted my 2012 slide-in Hawk. It was a fair bit of work but not impossible. I just used some dock hardware from Home Depot for the existing table along with a conduit elbow. worked GREAT and total cost less than 20.00! I'll see if I can find the link. I also reused the hardware. The...
