RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Finally Picking it up! DRE's new camper

Exactly. My flat bed builder offered to put a "shovel box" between the rails so you would have a box maybe 32" wide by 6"-8" high the full length of the bed. Access is from the back via a hinged, weather-tight door. It wouldn't work in our configuration but imagine the possibilities!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West An idea for sleeping 4 in a flatbed hawk - feedback wanted!

One more comment on what truck to buy, CarlG. If you are buying new to put a flatbed on it (of whatever length) I would strongly suggest you order the "Chassis Cab" configuration. The frame rails in back are flat and will make fitting your flatbed MUCH easier.

Another advantage of the LWB flatbed is you can have much bigger storage boxes under the bed.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West An idea for sleeping 4 in a flatbed hawk - feedback wanted!

I have a 2015 Flatbed Hawk, Carl, and really like it... for the two of us. But I would encourage you to at least consider the Grandby for a family of four. Not only would your sleeping area be solved with the double dinette but the whole family could eat at a real table. In fact, IF and when I...

Good point. Here in CO they don't use salt. And I really want one! :) Hey it is only 43 bucks on Amazon. Maybe I'll grease 'er up good and go fer it!

I thought so too but the reviews on Amazon were mixed at best. Seems to be a lot of problems with rusting and corrosion.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Concrete bed cushions

Yeah, FWC hard cushions are legendary. I've sat on pine 2 x 12's that were softer than our 2012 Hawk's 4" mattress! It seems like the 2015 mattress is better. One thing we did with our 2012 Hawk was to insert inside the mattress cover a thin "egg crate" foam topper from Walmart. We could still...

X2 on the Little Buddy. For us the condensation was manageable but not having a thermostat became an issue. Nice now to set the furnace super low (or high) and not worry about it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ram trucks, payload, suspension, and off-road ability

Re: suspension remember that a 9,000# plus PU with camper mounted probably will not do much serious rock crawling. (We have a 2 door Rubicon that we pull with a tow bar for that.) Our stock suspension/ stock tires Ram has never gotten stuck. (It does have a limited slip differential.) But we...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ram trucks, payload, suspension, and off-road ability

CarlG, I have a 2012 Ram 2500 CC with a 2015 Hawk Flatbed. I had a custom aluminum flatbed with four underbed boxes mounted which weighed 190# less than the original steel bed. However, even so, my lightly loaded wet weight with full tanks is 300# over GVW. With two kids and the assorted stuff...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Durango Area?

There are quite a few FWC's in Durango. I see them every day as DD's. We have a FWC Hawk but it is the flat bed model so may not give you a clear picture of a slide-in model. And we are in the Dominican Republic till mid February. Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dinosaur Trip to Utah

It isn't "dinosaurs" but last summer we drove the 40 mile Sand Canyon road. The NPS makes it sound like a difficult 4WD road. But I honestly think a 2WD sedan (carefully driven) would have been fine. Great scenery and in 40 miles we saw ONE car! (Unusual in a NP!) To be fair it looked like...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Truck suggestions (four wheel camper)

Whatever you get go with a 3500. You will thank me later for the extra payload. And IF your camper will be on permanently look at a custom aluminum flatbed on a chassis cab frame. That will be my next truck. Or maybe a built out 4 x 4 Sprinter... :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swift camper opinions

IF you are going to invest in a large truck I would sure also gain the extra room of a larger camper like a Hawk. The truck won't know it but you will. Or stay with your small truck and enjoy the easier wheeling. Big truck/small camper? Worst of both worlds IMHO.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What camper was 2nd on your list?

Even though FWC frustrates me with their rigid "no changes" policy (and the worst drawers ever built) I was super impressed by the no-drama quality of my first 2012 Hawk. Wanting more room I flirted extensively with Tiger and Phoenix. But at the end of the day the Tigers were just too big for...

Following. My neighbor just brought basically the same unit home to do a conversion in it. I've always been a 3/4 ton PU/ FWC kinda guy and we REALLY like our 2015 Flatbed Hawk. BUT I could be tempted... 1) No more huge hood hanging out front on those tight switchbacks. 2) No more "pass through...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

Sioux and I really like a lot of Marc's innovative concepts. But what swayed us away (this time) from XP was a) the weight, (sure you can get the capacity with a one ton but weight is weight!) B) b) the need to buy a different truck (diesel and 1 ton) and c) the small nature of the enterprise...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC in the Wind and Rain

As has been stated use your furnace to keep the air warmer which helps greatly with condensation if at the same time you keep the skylight cracked for ventilation.
