RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West My new truck 2021 F350 7.3gas

It's not close but Largo Tank & Equipment in Farmington, NM has built two custom aluminum flatbeds for me (one for a FWC Hawk and the latest one for a Grandby) and done an impeccable job on them both. Ask for Adam if you call them. I still can't figure out how to post photos here but email me...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fantastic Fan opens itself and destroys itself: Easy to Remove and Replace with MaxxAir?

Same exact problem for me with my 2018 Grandby flatbed. And here I thought it was just me!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Where do you get water refills on road trips?

A different approach that works for us. We carry potable water (filtered from our home system) in 13 one gallon square grocery store bottles. This lasts Sioux and me a week or more for drinking and cooking. (I've learned the hard way to swap the bottles out annually since they do wear out.) If...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West U.S. made Aluminum flatbed?

Darin, especially since you're close to these folks (They're 50 miles south of Durango) I wouldn't even hesitate. Totally custom flatbeds, absolutely bombproof, VERY reasonable and a delight to work with. Call (505) 327-6281 and ask for Adam. (Tell him 'Durango Steve' sent you!) I've never...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 'Rimrocker Trail' next week?

Hey WTW group! Sioux and I are looking at doing the Montrose-Moab Rimrocker trail Monday-Wednesday. (Or we may stretch it till Friday!) Any observations or suggestions? (We'll be in our Ram 3500 Flatbed Grandby combo.) Thanks in advance as you folks have always been a GREAT resource! Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Reservation time for WRT campsites?

White Rim Trail. Sioux and I spent five days on it in 2018. I've been going to Canyonlands for over 40 years and this was at every turn like... "WOW". We want to run it in reverse next time.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What to look for in a gel memory foam mattress topper for my camper?

X2 on the Froli. I believe we went with the Star. (1 3/4") The Froli is nice because you can switch out the springs depending on your pressure points. We stayed with the 2018 factory mattress and then a pillowtop topper. We even keep the sheets, light sleeping bag and comforter on top. (We do...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West buffer between flatbed tray and camper

On both my previous 2015 Hawk flatbed and current 2018 Grandby flatbed I filled the air spaces between the floor stringers with rigid foam. Never have seen the need for any sort of mat given that the camper is bolted down with 3" x 5" 1/4" thick aluminum washers and Grade 8 bolts. Never an issue...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Covid Vaccine -- Have you got yours?

Yep. Sioux (64) and I (68) got our second Pfizer a week ago. No major side effects. (I'm almost afraid we were in the placebo 'control' group!)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Do you use water tank for drinking water?

I'll be odd man out here. We use square 1 gallon jugs (about 1 1/2 per day) for drinking and coffee water and keep them under our dinette seats. Why? 1) We have a fancy filter in our house we refill from, 2) the jugs extend the water in our tank and 3) I'm too lazy to run the chlorine in my...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aluminum Flatbed deck material- is diamond plate or extruded better for off road?

I went with 3/16" flat for my mounted full-time 2018 Grandby and have been very happy. It was about $200.00 and 40# more than the 1/8" plate but I've always been a belt and suspenders guy when it comes to off-roading. (Aluminum cross beams were 12" O.C.) for a very substantial build.)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Covid Vaccine -- Have you got yours?

Sioux and I are scheduled for our first shot tomorrow. I'm 68 and she is 64 but had chemo last year. The only way we got in was (forgive us) our neighbors are volunteers in the local COVID vaccine program and they called us Tuesday, "Go to this link immediately before we put it up on the site"...

Your reasoning was much the same as I went through in ordering our 2018 regular cab Ram SRW Chassis Cab. I got the SLT to please the spousal unit bot otherwise basically the same. In the future you can sell the bed, and install a Grandby flatbed which really is heaven on earth! Best wishes and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West choosing a flatbed

I would add to Stan's excellent list: Largo Tank in Farmington, NM http://www.largotank.com/ Largo has built me two custom aluminum flatbeds exactly to my specs. My last 8 1/2' flatbed with four RC under bed boxes and a rear shovel box was 6,500.00 installed! (With great design help thrown in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 'Warm(er)' boondocking/'mild' 4WD roads and fun areas in the SW?

We just gotta get out of the Colorado cold next week for 10-12 days with an 'extremely socially distanced' road trip. (The ONLY places we will go to are gas pumps and trash disposal. We'll carry ALL food and water.) Suggestions on warm SW areas for wildlife viewing, isolated and scenic...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flatbed protection on underside of camper when installing to flatbed?

I added rigid foam between the ribs on both my Hawk and Grandby flatbed models. If you're concerned about water maybe drill some strategically located drain holes? (I've never seen a flatbed yet that is 100% 'flat'!)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Storage place for hitch mounted winch?

Wow, you've got yerself a challenge. I have a Warn 10,000# VR10000-s mounted on a hitch-mounted carrier and it is BULKY! (More the carrier than the winch.) We used to have a slide-in Hawk and if you have the rollover bed it might fit underneath. But I don't believe you'll get it in between the...

Stray Dog, Sioux and I are heading down to southern AZ 1/14-1/30 for some warmer birdwatching. (We know it isn't prime season for birds but did I mention "warm"?) We're looking at the San Pedro Riparian area, Organ Pipe, etc. Safe travels and thanks, Occidental, for some great photos! Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Siding Choice

Like you, Jon, "I don't have a strong preference about the appearance" either! However... To play Devil's Advocate here are four possible disadvantages of flat siding: 1) More money (DUH!), 2) corrugated will be better at 'breaking up' the expanse to hide scratches, 3) I'm guessing may be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Camp shovel suggestions

Sioux and I are in the two shovel camp. We keep a long handle shovel in the (where else) 'shovel box' built in to our flat bed. (We fortunately almost never need to use it.) But I found this shovel dinking around Amazon and it has been brilliant for cat holes (slices through roots like crazy)...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Slide in Vs Flatbed?

I agree on this. The flatbed FWC is a challenge to remove and replace. I didn't even buy jack stands for mine- it stays on full time. Otherwise, as the past owner of a 2012 slide-in Hawk and a 2015 Hawk fllatbed model- and now a 2018 Grandby FB the flatbed models win hands down for ever so...
