RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ATC Manx

Nice work, Manxman! I'm an amateur cabinet maker myself so thought long and serious about the shell route on my Hawk Flatbed I just ordered. But I HATE plumbing so decided to let FWC do the whole thing and then modify stuff. One thought- on our current hawk I went in and changed several of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Dream FWC?

On the Hawk we have now there is a pull-out but it takes the fixed bed at 48" out to 60". Not enough for a guy over 6'! :) Since I am an inveterate tinkerer/ remodeler once I get the new FB Hawk I may figger out how to put a slide out on it. But the standard width of the fixed bed is 60". Plus...

Both of those features are on the FB Hawk. However, we still have to sleep east-west. :( I am looking forward to the under bed clothes storage. It gets old living out of duffel bags.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Dream FWC?

I totally agree. We have camped in our current slide-in Hawk 28 nights in the 2015 season and have another trip scheduled for July 5th and forward. In fact, during our recent 4300 mile Colorado-Oregon road trip we planned to stay in hotels every so often "for a break". But we were so...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Dream FWC?

We kicked around selling the 2500 short bed and upgrading to a long wheelbase one ton diesel in an extended cab. But then when I saw on the Grandby FB model FWC stuck all of the space we would gain into a 48" wide dinette (I'm not that fat!) instead of giving us more walking/food prep/cabinet...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Dream FWC?

Over the last 18 months I had a serious dalliance with Mark Guild who builds the Tigers. We also made a trip to Denver and met with Rob and Cari of Phoenix fame. (I still have my projected flatbed build with them drawn out full size on my garage floor!) And I really like what Marc of XP does...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Dream FWC?

Interesting. We just went through this process over the last few months. We love our 2012 slide-in Hawk (especially after I added an inside shower, extra drawers and converted over to the side dinette option) but we were still looking for the "sweet spot" for us as a couple. Soooo... Two weeks...

Sorry. I've got a Ram 2500. But check out and call etrailer.com They have good customer service and the one I bought required no cutting.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help Me Start From Scratch

Totally agree. Just for kicks I weighed my Ram 2500/ Hawk recently. With full water and fuel it weighed 8900#. And the problem? GVWR is 8800#! And the missus wasn't even on board for the weighing! Remember this is with a 3/4 ton PU. It really does add up!

This "sharing site" at its best. I'll be waiting. And I hope FWC will be paying attention... before they ship my Flatbed hawk in September! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help Me Start From Scratch

If you are serious about off-road you want to stay with FWC. I'm upgrading my slide-in Hawk to their flat bed model. You should look at this concept and possibly order a PU with the bed delete option and have an after-market aluminum flat bed put on. (For my reasons to go with a flat bed Hawk...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Distance between top of cab and bottom of cabover?

So I went out and measured what my Hawk is now from the cab roof and it is 3 1/4". However, given that the Flat Bed model inevitably sits higher (about 6") I'm aiming for 2" to 2 1/2" and the FWC factory got back to me and said given the rigidity of their cabover that shouldn't be a problem...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Distance between top of cab and bottom of cabover?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I wrote the factory asking for their suggestions. I'll post back with what they say. Any more suggestions from our members would be welcome too!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Distance between top of cab and bottom of cabover?

So I'm speccing out the customer flatbed build for my Hawk and the company is willing to build it as I wish. So while I want the lowest possible height (don't we all?) I don't want to have the cabover scraping my cab roof on a tough trail. My gut tells me the closest I should go is 2"? What do...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flat beds selling well?

I'm still getting quotes on flat beds. But I did get a written quote from Alumline in Cresco, IA for a VERY nice custom aluminum bed with four storage boxes and a swept up tail for 4535.00 and with shipping to Durango, CO for 645.00. I've seen their work on another Hawk FB and it is impeccable...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flat beds selling well?

I just ordered a Hawk FB for October delivery from Denny two days ago. So why are we going to change from our 2012 slide-in Hawk that we know and love and that we've improved/customized extensively? 1) Better specced out- Over the last 3 years we've realized we should have ordered a furnace...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New 15 Hawk

We put a heavy duty 1/4" rubber cargo mat under ours. the theory is it makes the camper a bit quieter over the road and helps to prevent moving around. Can't say it is "the answer" but our camper is quiet and doesn't move! One suggestions would be to look into the inside shower option. My...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New 15 Hawk

You are in good company! I just pulled the trigger with Denny yesterday on a new Hawk Flatbed model to be delivered (hopefully) in October! (Now if I could just find a reliable aluminum FB manufacturer that wasn't 1200 miles away!) Anyway, one thing I recently added on our 2012 slide-in Hawk...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How many are towing a vehicle behind your PU camper?

Bottom line: a Brake Buddy setup on a flat-towed Jeep is expensive but may very well be worth its weight in gold. Foy Like Foy, at 62 I'm all about avoiding unnecessary "drama"! (Insert squawking chicken sound here!) :) So I'm leaning toward this braking unit. Pricey but apparently less...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How many are towing a vehicle behind your PU camper?

Hemi gas. And that's with a topped out GVWR with the camper on board. No question that a diesel would pull better. We'll see once I get input on what tow bar to use. I'll test it and report back!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How many are towing a vehicle behind your PU camper?

So in our never-ending quest for the "sweet spot" we're thinking about towing our 2 door Rubicon behind the Ram 2500/Hawk combo. Even though the Hawk breaks down easily it gets a bit tiresome putting everything away to drive five miles to start a hike and then returning to camp at the same spot...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Already overweight with my Ram 2500/ Hawk combo

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really would prefer to keep the Ram 2500 if it will be adequate. I am a conservative and careful driver. (I don't care what Sioux says!) It has the stock E-rated Michelin LT 285/70R17 tires on it now and I can't seem to wear them out! They are rated at 3195#...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Already overweight with my Ram 2500/ Hawk combo

Let me apologize in advance for monopolizing the discussion with my camper decision drama! :) So as I've mentioned Sioux and I just finished up our 3 week 40th Anniversary 4200 mile odyssey and had a great time. And I felt like my 2012 Ram 2500 with the Hemi and the Hawk on back did just fine...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Newer updated FWC mattress?

So the mattress that came in my 2012 Hawk had the approximate softness of a pine 2" x 12"! But I understand in the last year or so FWC has improved their standard mattress foam. So is anyone a) using this new FWC mattress successfully or b) improved on it with a topper, etc or c) deleted it and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC stock AGM's vs. 2 6 volt batteries

So Sioux and are almost done with our 4200 mile 40th anniversary odyssey. And our 2012 slide-in Hawk/ Ram 2500 combo has done GREAT! But even so we're close to pulling the trigger on a new Hawk flatbed. (More room, more amenities.) And I am FAR from being an electrician so some advice please...
