RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 6 days 'wandering' in southern Utah...

Really great suggestions, guys! I'm printing them out. And thanks for the reminder on Johns Canyon. We were intrigued by this road when we came down the Dugway last year. That may make a good early camp tomorrow night after a fairly short drive from Durango. (depending on when we get out of town.)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 6 days 'wandering' in southern Utah...

My apologies for my tardy questions. (We leave tomorrow morning.) Sioux and I are heading out for six days of just 'messing around' the Escalante/ Grand Staircase/ Waterpocket Fold area. Targets include the Bull Creek Pass Trail, Wolverine Loop and maybe Cathedral Valley. But hey, as...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What truck with a FWC

I'm happy with my Ram 3500 chassis cab in a regular cab configuration with a Grandby flatbed and a crossbox behind the cab. It works for the two of us with a 20# dog. However, in your situation I'd seriously look at the Ford Tremor. (I've been tempted myself but Sioux says no!) Most of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West North central NM suggestions?

Thanks, Frank! I did PM Bill and he had some very targeted and valuable ideas. Questions for anyone here. We've kind of morphed into going south from Cumbres Pass on FR 87 down to HWY 64. Anyone have any thoughts on this stretch of road and/or good dispersed camping areas? Thanks! Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West North central NM suggestions?

So we're looking to get out of Durango for a few days. (We're open to anything within a two hour drive of home.)We've driven Hwy. 64 between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras in northern NM many times. So we thought next week we'd like to explore north of 64 in Carson NF and on up to Cumbres...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Grandby flatbed with behind-the-cab boxes?

I basically have what you describe, Bluebeard, except we're running a 2018 Ram cab & chassis in a regular cab. We had our tunnel box custom made at 22" wide. (I wouldn't go much narrower because you'll lose functionality.) Almost 30% of our box is taken up with the Ram's full size spare because...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Why *shouldn't* we remove the folding metal cover of the three burner stove?

We took ours off two years ago. Never lost a grate yet and now have more counter space when cooking...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Home for the Hawk 2500 Power Wagon

I removed the bumpers on my 2012 Hawk without problems and I was able to slide the camper forward. Did the same on my flatbed model too. And yes, you'll definitely need air bags on a Power Wagon. Have you looked at the new Ford Tremor one ton trucks? Many of the features of the PW but with a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Limiting Factor - Water, Battery, Freezer space, Toilet Paper?

    1. Fuel? 52 gallon gas tank so conservatively 550-600 mile range on the highway. Probably 350-400 in 4WD in the back country. 2. Water? 26 gallon tank plus we can carry two 7.5 jerry cans of water plus 8 one gallon jugs of drinking water. 12-14 days easy. 3. Food? I'm kind of a kitchen sink...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hot water heater - necessary or luxury?

Both work. At least in a flatbed model the water heater is set low in a pretty non-accessible storage area. So then it comes back to finances. None of us bought a FWC to rough it... so there is your answer... or not! We not only have a hot water heater (gives me a warm and cuddly feeling every...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West XP Camper Relaunched as Nimble Vehicles

I went through their entire website and couldn't find a wet weight on the camper. Nor a dry weight either! Anyone know? Thanks, Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Canyon advice

I read somewhere that one pound placed behind the rear axle is equal to 3# in front of the axle. (Don't quote me on this.) And welcome to WTW...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Concealed Carry

"Although it’s not normally discussed I believe the vast majority of RVers carry from my experience..." I guess it depends on the definition of "carry". I have never gotten a CC permit for my daily activities since Durango, CO is a really small and mostly safe town with a fast response police...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Quartzite AZ (and 'surroundings')

Thanks folks! Burro Creek sounds interesting! We birded south of Tucson including Madera last year. This time we're thinking in a strip from Kofa north to Kingman and willing to dart into California a bit before we dart back to Durango via I-40 next Saturday. Any more suggestions welcomed! Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Quartzite AZ (and 'surroundings')

Yes, we know Quartzite itself is a zoo this time of year. But we'd like to see the spectacle. (Briefly) Let me share the context... We're fleeing the cold and snow of Durango, CO and crave warmer climes. We've never explored SE Arizona so thought why not? Plus Sioux is an obsessed bird watcher...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Insulating the floor of your camper

I used the exact same foam board from Home Depot to fill in the spaces on my last two FWC flatbeds. However, I ordered them with only one 'runner' so we only had 3/4" to work with. (It kept my overall height lower.) Does it work? Don't know but definitely worth the 20 bucks or sure to know we...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flat Beds--COG Can Be A Problem!?

Totally agree on looking into a cab and chassis, Wango. The design possibilities are greatly increased as long as you can live with lower trim options. For example, our 2018 Ram Chassis Cab (in the regular cab model) didn't come with the Laramie trim! BOO-HOO!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Moving from #Vanlife to a Camper

Just a suggestion. Make sure the camper is raised before making a decision. I'm always amazed how big inside our FWC is when I raise it. And definitely go at least 3/4 ton. I painfully went the upgrade route and am now in a 3500 Ram chassis cab with a 4,000# plus payload and still flirt with...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jump Starter 'battery' pack

X 2 on the need for a REALLY good jump starter if you travel alone. (Like Sioux and I always do.) They say this one starts semi's so it ought to work for a 6.4 Ram gas engine! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JFJLP6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ?’s about options on a custom order 2020 Ford F-350 6.2L gasser

Much the same options as the Ram Chassis Cab I ordered last year. (I liked the Ford but she-who-must-be-obeyed preferred the Ram cab and interior- guess what we bought?) Two comments: A) If you are going to mount your camper permanently I'd strongly recommend a flatbed model. They are MUCH more...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Installing Stairs from STEP-UP Products... I'm impressed

I did much the same thing on my first slide-in Hawk. But I mounted the stairs permanently, attached stainless steel cables with loops and carabiners on the feet and held them up to stainless steel eyebolts through bolted with fender washer backing to the door frame. (Wish I could figure out how...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Silverton/Telluride Loop - August 2019

What, Bill, you didn't do Black Bear Pass? Actually Black Bear may still not be open or even open at all this year. Plus even with a 2 door Rubicon I just can't seem to get excited enough to do it! Sioux and I were over in Telluride yesterday and there are still flowers in the high mountain...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC and Overland Solar 160w panel reliability

I'm a solar (and electrical) dummy, Raven. However, the OS system on my 2018 Grandby Flatbed has been (apparently) working well for over a year. (One frustration I have with OS is no printed manual.)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Small camper, big(ger) truck

Bento, google the year and make of any truck along with the phrase "body builder guide' and you'll find each model's 'Upfitter Guide' that will have ever conceivable measurement you could want. (This is what I did in planning the flatbed build for my Ram Chassis Cab last year.
