RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Winnebago 4x4 Concept Adventure Vehicle

I considered doing a 4 x 4 Sprinter conversion (my neighbor just did a great one) for my next build OR just buying the Winnebago. But at the end of the day the jury is still out in my mind on how well a uni-body 'sort of 4 x 4' is going to handle the sort of semi-gnarly tracks we still like to...

yes. I didn't get it on my first Hawk thinking it would be a frustration. Not so on my second Hawk. I've ordered it on my new Grandby Flatbed. Actually I'd like to come up with some sort of batt insulation between the two to give more warmth. But that's a different thread!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West The latest and greatest in cell phone boosters?

Not too hijack my own thread but where did you get and/or build your side entry steps for your flatbed camper? They look 'safer' than the ones I'm currently using!

Thanks, Rando. The link to the "trucker antenna" is a big help. Since our new rig will be a regular cab the cab roof will be completely covered and I've been wondering where I'd put the antenna. Which model of the Weboost 4G booster do you have? They are pricey little things! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West The latest and greatest in cell phone boosters?

We currently have the Wilson Sleek 4G 5-Band Kit 5-Band Voice & 4G Data Booster installed in our Ram/ Flatbed Hawk combo and honestly it performs great with our S7 phones. In fact, I was going to transfer the set-up into our new 2018 Ram Chassis Cab and Grandby Flatbed arriving in March. But...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Please help me decide on which GVW to order...

True, Ron. But on my 2015 Hawk flatbed build I found a local fabricator that does great custom work and will let me add in little design tweaks.

Thanks for all the advice. I need to do some research with the CO DMV. Truck won't be here till mid-March at the earliest. Meanwhile, I'll be working on designing my "dream aluminum flatbed"... :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Anyone install cargo track inside their campers?

Ya think? I'm buying my THIRD FWC in five years and do you think they could come up with an actual drawing on where the structural members are for even the original buyer? Let me stop the suspense. The answer is... NO!

12K? And I thought I traveled heavy! Thanks for the input! BTW, everyone, I went for the 11,000# GVW Ram 3500. Delivery sometime in March... Of course, with this info from barkerco I'm now officially worried that I'll "only" have a 4800# payload! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shower Enclosure

We are the contrarians here re: outside showers. Sioux hates them because invariably a brisk and chilly breeze comes up while she is showering. Now we have the inside shower in our flatbed hawk. But on my slide-in Hawk I made an shower enclosure and basin that worked great. Steve...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Noob question: best truck for a FWC Hawk?

3/4 ton at least. You will thank me later. (I am moving up to a one tome with my new FWC Grandby.)

Hopefully you folks can tolerate one more question on my projected 2018 Ram 3500 SRW Chassis Cab order! I've already got a new FWC Grandby flatbed ordered for it and yes, we travel "heavy"! I'm guessing with all our crap, extra water, etc we'll be at a 3,000 pound plus payload. So here's the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Paralysis by Analysis on Ram 3500 vs. F-350

I'm coming down to the wire on ordering either the F-350 or Ram 3500 Chassis Cab SRW in a regular cab configuration for my already ordered FWC Grandby Flatbed. I've driven and analyzed (too much!) both models and will order one of them in a gasser. Both seem to be good trucks and I've been happy...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2018 F-350 manual locking hubs?

Yeah, it is mostly the seats being non-adjustable on the Ford that is the cruncher right now. Yes, I know that is crazy but Sioux is having a hard time seeing over the steering wheel. I'd even buy the Lariat to resolve it but that means going to the Super Cab's 168" wheelbase and with the places...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2018 F-350 manual locking hubs?

So if I understand this even if the ESOF doesn't work all you have to do is lock in the hubs manually and good-to-go? I was all ready to go with the manual transfer case but now it appears in the Lariat trim level (for the wife) only the ESOF is available. :(

I installed full extension drawers in my Hawks. [sharedmedia=core:attachments:21686] Gonna do it in my new Grandby flatbed too.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2018 F-350 manual locking hubs?

I really wanted the Super Cab because it can be ordered with higher trim levels. BUT with the 9' bed on a Chassis Cab it is just too long for where we like to go. I do have a lot of design ideas on custom flatbeds if you are interested. If you do a Chassis Cab then ask your fabricator about...

Yes, Ford does offer an electronic locking differential with a 4.30 ration which is what we'll order if we go with Ford.

I literally prepared a Powerpoint presentation for Sioux called, "Why Steve Needs a New Camper". (And a new truck) Best wishes on your sale. Sigh,,, I need to get all my personal gear out of my Hawk Flatbed. I'm going to sell it as a combo with the 2012 Ram which I bought brand new and it only...

[sharedmedia=core:attachments:22032] [sharedmedia=core:attachments:22034] I made the same transition two years ago. You will LOVE your new Hawk Flatbed! Of course, me being a seriously diseased FWC addict I just ordered a new fully optioned Grandby Flatbed model from Denny! Plus am now...

Excellent info and much appreciated. I'm not much into mucking around altering a brand new vehicle so likely will go with the manual transfer case and hubs. Thank you for the reminder on the GVWR. I definitely want more than the 28 gallon tank and as high as a payload rating as possible. We...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2018 F-350 manual locking hubs?

I appreciate allt he advice! So I really like the idea of being able to go into 2WD low for maximum steering flexibility. But I'm assuming that the ESOF on the dash won't allow this, only the manual transfer case? Do I have that right? PS The Ford can be optioned with an electronic locking...

I posted this over on the Expedition Portal site but respect the opinions of this group too. The Ram vs. Ford question is killing me. Thoughts? FWC has to love me. I just ordered my third FWC in five years- a Flatbed Grandby. Even though we're delighted with our Flatbed Hawk we just wanted a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Flatbed Discussion

Taking off and reinstalling my flatbed Hawk would be a nightmare with six holes with bolts and plated to all line up. I love the FWC flatbed models (just ordered a new Grandby!) but I would encourage anyone that installs a flatbed model to stop thinking of their vehicle as a 'truck" and more of...
