A useful and, these days, widely applicable term.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tipping angle w/ camper?

The important thing to note here is that any intelligent person will back off long before the vehicle is in danger of tipping on a static side slope. Most capsizes occur completely unexpectedly when a verge gives way or a tire drops into a hole. Or of course from hooning. As to that truck and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Breaking Tire Lug Studs. (and other tire issues)

It sounds to me like whoever installed your tires last did so with an impact wrench and just let it hammer on, over-torquing them. Properly torqued lug nuts shouldn't cause this issue. With that said, the advice about anti-seize is good anywhere. I also did not understand if you meant the studs...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wheel (rim) Size Question

"Body roll doesn't bother me, but then I learned to drive in a Saab 96......" Now that is funny! Agreed on the trend toward silly low-profile truck tires.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wheel (rim) Size Question

Jumping in . . . With 20" wheels and the correspondingly shorter sidewalls of the tires I'm pretty sure the roll issues you mention are suspension related, as someone mentioned, rather than anything to do with sidewall squirm. It's difficult to say without driving your truck; the Bundutec is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Recovery jack comparison

The only issue I can see with the hockey-puck hack is whether the material is configured to withstand that kind of compression. Clearly they're designed to be abused, but not in that particular fashion! Besides material, the advantage to the Agile Off Road adapter is its security whether set...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Recovery jack comparison

Very clever! I wonder if you could countersink the screws a bit more and dish the top on to fit more securely under a solid axle?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Recovery jack comparison

As Scott Hein mentioned, factory jacks are generally barely adequate to lift an empty truck, much less one at or near GVWR. You're right that the Hi-Lift is not the best choice for tire-changing duty.

Anyone who is contemplating buying a recovery jack but is undecided which one to get might find this article useful. I've used them all in the field, and gave them all a fair shake. Cheers, Jonathan

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Recovery Board Storage

Several companies now make dedicated bolt-through mounts for traction boards that might adapt to your Yakimas. Check with Front Runner. However, I'm going to urge you to spend the extra and invest in MaxTrax. I've tested a lot of traction boards, and the budget ones just don't hold up. I've...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona?

As mentioned, do not miss the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, actually a world-class zoo and research center. San Xavier Mission is well worth a stop and right off the freeway heading south from Tucson; however, check to see if it is open before you go. The community has been covid-closed for a year.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma - current gen vs next gen as platform for FWC

I fervently hope Toyota will follow their path with the 2022 Tundra and reintroduce a fully boxed chassis on the next generation Tacoma. A multi-link coil rear suspension would be icing on the cake, as would a proper truck engine that produces more torque than horsepower. It's about time Toyota...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Blown airbag

There is no reason to remove the camper from the truck to install air bags. I've never done so on my own or other trucks and never had a failure or issues. I'm not a fan of add-a-leafs as they tend to add stress risers in places not intended. I've seen (and personally experienced) too many...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Abs problem

We had this happen with our 2012 Tacoma and FWC while it was under warranty. Local dealers refused to do anything about it since they couldn't replicate it driving around the block. We finally got hold of a knowledgable supervisor in . . . Reno, maybe? who knew exactly what it was. They just...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ARB Rapid Deflator

I assume you're referring to instances in which you are helping them, and not when they are helping you! In any case, I'd always rather use my recovery gear, which I know intimately. You don't know how someone might have abused a kinetic strap or winch line that looks perfectly okay. I'd...

Are you referring to the TPMS system now in all vehicles? If so: No, airing down will not hurt them, it will just trigger the warning light on the dash.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Going on a Diet - Safety Gear and Tools

This is a very good point. I always stress to people they should have their own tools even if they have zero mechanical ability. If you have to rely on a passing good Samaritan to help the least you can do is offer your own tools. The same goes for recovery gear, with the added component of...

"I did a bit of searching both on the forum and with Google. I can't seem to hunt anything down. Would you kindly point me in the direction. Thanks!" I believe he is referring to Overland Tech and Travel, here. :-) Search there and you'll find . . . a lot . . . on tools. But at a minimum a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What size eyebolts?

I second what Jon said. Forged eyebolts are the way to go. Use the largest backing plates you can fit; the more you spread the load the better. Be sure to radius the corners to avoid stress risers.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Front Runner Wolf Pack ?

Yes, lots. We love them. Very space-efficient, rainproof if left out. While you can stand on them, I added a piece of 1/4-inch aluminum checker plate to one of ours to make a step for the Troopy. That's also the box in which we store all the camp setup equipment—drain hoses, leveling blocks...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ford F-350 suspension modification?

The goal with a camper mounted should be to have the truck sitting level, so that headlight alignment, aerodynamics (such as they are), and brake balance remain nominal. The very best way to achieve this, as has been mentioned, is with a custom spring pack—as long as you plan to leave the camper...
