RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 3/4 ton is not the end all

I removed my aftermarket rear sway bar when I downsized my camper to the Grandby and swapped my airbags with Timbrens (to allow full axle drop and no ripped bags) and have no sway issues. I chose to use the 1" spacer so it is barely in full contact with the axle at rest and I get the near...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire Upgrade from Truck to Camper

To avoid needing to run the fridge on gas or DC while in transit, I use several "Blue Ice" plastic freeze blocks. Keeps it cold for more than a day, and when I stop for the day, I switch to propane and move the blocks into the freezer comparment. Pull them out the next morning. In cooler...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Upsizing

Loads of threads on here about which truck. Mostly personal prefernce in my observation, they all will do the job assuming you are talking about 3/4 ton or more. 1/2 ton has also worked for some, do your research more carefully though, could end up feeling the same as your current situation...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire Upgrade from Truck to Camper

Do what you can to keep it short. It might almost get you the effect of installing a more expensive thicker wire the long way. Saves you money and works better and lighter keeping it short. I use the separate red and black wire off the rolls and use inexpensive split loom for protection where...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire Upgrade from Truck to Camper

I used the Anderson power pole connectors. I really like them, they're a good positive connection. Get a good crimper to attach the wire to the poles. The only thing I need to rig up is a better way to hang the connector when the camper isn't on the truck. It just lays in the box with a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC on a dually?

If you are referring to how to tie down a FWC on a dually, it is no issue. They typically tie down inside the bed. Turnbuckles between eyebolts under the camper wing walls and 4 eyebolts through teh floor of the truck bed. No exposed tie downs you can see. Accessed from inside the camper via...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Multiple Charging Sources

... Back to the truck for a second. Voltage drop from the truck alternator to the camper battery would seem to be quite important. Therefore, would it make more sense increase the gauge of the wire from the truck battery to the camper (within reason) minimizing the voltage drop? This would give...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Multiple Charging Sources

I am curious, how did you determine the truck puts out only 14.0VDC? Was this at the camper battery? With a full or discharged battery? What size wire are you running from the truck battery to the camper? Same size all the way? Connector types? Is it clean and tight? Using a diode isolator...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Multiple Charging Sources

My suspicions are they same as yours. However, this does create a bit of a problem. If I've been stationary for 2 or 3 days and the battery is low, when I hit the road, the truck's alternator is only going to put 14 VDC. That's its cutoff voltage. The solar panel will be putting out 14.5...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Multiple Charging Sources

My take is that for the typical 3 sources - solar charger, AC powered converter/chargers (most factory systems are constant voltage) and the truck charging on our systems, it is of no concern. There are only 1 or 2 on at a time normally, solar being on always in daytime. The truck is on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Spring Loaded Turnbuckle?

The happijac tunrbuckles use replaceable threaded rods/hooks. You can cut them all the way down to a few threads left if you want. The rear ones use rubber bushings, the front springs. They may still be too long though. I sold mine when I got the FWC so cannot try it out.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West worried about someone stealing my camper

Like mentioned, with it tied down to the truck using the internal turnbuckles, not attractive. That said I back my truck up to house so that it is not facing open ground. They would have to steal the whole truck, which is actually easier than the camper alone. In WA campers must be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West More Breaker issues

I am not clear on where the 30amp breaker you referred to is. I think it is between the battery and other DC loads since you bypassed it to charge. So what is between the battery and refrigerator? If the refrigerator is rated a 13amp draw then there is no way it will pop a properly working...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West A stupid Question

The wires are Battery positive and Battery negative (aka ground - it can be connected to the chassis most anywhere but best to run direct to the engine ground post that the battery connects to) and marker light. The marker light can be tied into the trailer lights wiring. The trailer light...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Low Voltage Alarm

Sounds like you are on AC power (shore power) running the DC converter/charger, but no battery and either your AC service is getting power hits, or your 12V DC converter is not stable. Check your battery voltage and ensure the fuse(s) to it are good, the battery is good, and that it is getting...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help needed with roof struts!

The Grandby/Hawks are wider likely and so no issue fitting them. Maybe turn the bracket 180 degrees so the ball is on top, bolt holes down and slip them under your roof latch brackets? Also try 90 degrees and under the roof latch brackets.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Grandby on 6.5 Dodge Ram 2500?

You can get some serious hitch extenders. Very common to see them on dually trucks under 11ft campers towing 20ft trailers or jeeps. Thet have chain and turnbuckle support on the sides, and can have parallel square steel pipe extensions, with weight distribution hitch also. Works fine, gets us...

As a result of the standard RV/trailer layout with passenger and awning on teh right side, the RV campgroud spots are rigged with utilities (power, sewer, water) on the left out of traffic and short runs to the vehicle, the right has picnic table and clear walking path. Also the noise of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 3/4 ton is not the end all

My 2005 hemi longbox is rated about 2600# payload and 8800#GVW so about 6200# truck weight with 1 150# driver and I think they count 1/2 tank of gas (35gallon tank). The Cummins version was 2000#. One reason besides cost I went the Hemi as I started with a full size camper as my target. With...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 3/4 ton is not the end all

I can say my findings which includes a partial comparison to the same year RAM 1500 and 2500 which might add perspective on one part of the camparison. I had a 2005 1500 and replaced it with a 2005 2500, both Hemi. Ran a full size 8ft Pastime camper and only added rear airbags and rear Hellwig...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dodge Dakotas?

I love the full size, but the Dakota is full of issues. Last one was my son's, a late model (2008 or 09), engine and steering suspension issues, never did get the rated mpg, dealer could not fix it, was traded in on a full size 2010 RAM 1500, he has been happy as a clam since. Great mileage...
