RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Mormon Cricket Stories

We encountered many tarantulas coming out of the Carizzo Plain on our way out to SLO one year. My understanding is that they were not migrating - just sex-crazed males. We did try to miss them, yelling party on, dudes. Fortunately, their number were nothing like the crickets.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Benchmark Maps British Columbia Now Available

Benchmark's British Columbia map is now available from benchmarkmaps.com (and its spiral bound!). Had not noticed before, but they now have a map for the Southern Appalachians. The Benchmark BC is a great complement to the MapArt.com BC Back Road Atlas. The Benchmark map is half the resolution...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Airbags vs new leaf springs?

Two more cents. When we put our 2015 Fleet on our then new 2019 For Ranger, our options were Air Lift bags or ordering springs from Australia. With our usual impatience, we installed the Air Lift bags. My wife's relationship with her back has deteriorated over time and the bounce from the bags...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Easy Whale Faucet Upgrade? Plug and play

Yeah, the Whale faucet is not a selling point. I replaced the Whale faucet in our 2015 Fleet front dinette. The sink in the front dinette is oriented with the long dimension front to back, but I still did not need to remove the sink to replace the faucet. Most faucet dimensions conform to one of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Roof Rack - Portland OR - FREE

Still taking up too much space - time to move it. From 2015 Fleet - it should fit other models, but check on your roof ribs. I can email the spacing, or you can drill new holes in the rack to mount. Complete with screws and hole covers. It's maybe 10 lbs, but awkward to ship.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Single Sheet Roof "Tin Canning"...Why?

The 2-piece roof was replaced on our 2005 Eagle with the 1-piece roof, and I no longer needed to reseal the screws every year or two. Our first encounter with roof leaks, of course, happened early in week spring trip in the Pacific North Wet. We now have a 2015 Hawk and have not had any leaks...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Good Car Camping Tent

We camped for over 30 years with a Eureka Timberline 6 person tent and it did us very well, 2000+ nights. Plenty of room for 3 and quite comfortable with 4.You can stand up in it easily (4 people at the same time). The best part is when it rains. Assemble the frame, put the fly on and then roll...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lithium Upgrade

8 AWG is hit or miss without an engine on/off sense line. When we swapped out our Tacoma for a Ford Ranger, I reused the 8 AWG wiring from the Tacoma. I bypassed the FWC plug and wired straight to the Victron DC-DC (over the side of the bed, with an Anderson connector tied to the side of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Going electric for heat only, seems simpler & renewable

To add to Vic's numbers, there's about 120 kWh in 4.5 lb of propane (a 20 gallon tank or two 10 gallon tanks). There's about 1.2 kWh in a Lithium battery. It would take 100 lithium batteries (100Ah) to provide about the same amount of heat as a tank of propane. It takes about 15 minutes to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Carrizo Plain Camping

Left the Carrizo this morning. Each year there are more people, and the Selby sites were full, but only 3 of us in the open spaces that can accommodate 6 or so more. Flowers not in full bloom - maybe one to two weeks, but still very enjoyable. We have camped several times on roads leading off...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Last Minute Desert Plans

We were in the Mohave Preserve two days ago and are now in Anza Borrego. We had planned to go through Joshua Tree between the two, but the West Visitor Center was so mobbed we got scared off. It's spring break and Joshua Tree is mobbed by college kids and climbers. . For us, the Mojave Preserve...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ghost In My Roof Vent

Like Craig333, we swapped the fantastic for a Max. We kept the interior edge frame from the Fantastic to make the job even simpler. We then upgraded the Max to the Max with remote. The remote model is all open or closed with the remote, but for both you can manually adjust the opening. With the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West furnace thermostat altitude issue

This is a good one! I wouldn't rule out the sail switch. At that elevation the air is much thinner, and heated air is even thinner.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

For FWCs sold in Oregon, the battery compartment must be sealed and vented, regardless of battery type. I had to remove much of the silicone sealant to fit two Full River AGMs into our 2015 Fleet FD. Our current battery is a 280aH LifePO4 - so much better.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cell Phone Telephoto Attachment?

Our Lumix 30x superzoom has been eclipsed by my Pixel 6 pro - except for telephoto. The Pixel does a great job otherwise - photos are for personal enjoyment and not for publishing or large format. And I prefer the Pixel over my wife's Samsung S22+ (or an iPhone 14 pro max) for the generally more...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flexible Solar Panel Recommendations

Our HQST panels have done us well. We mounted them with 2" velcro strips along the sides. This keeps the panel off the roof with a 1/4" gap that may be of some thermal help. The panel front corners have a piece of roof repair tape to anchor them to the roof. This leaves a gap to allow air flow at...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wandering from Tennessee to Alaska

I didn't notice any mention of Milepost. Fabulous guide to the far NW roads (includes the Dempster to Tuk and most other roads in NWT and Yukon). There's a lot of crushed rock road so make sure your tires are good. We have driven most of the northern Canadian roads. The Trans Can over the lakes...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Surprise Valley, Northeast California - October 2022

We stumbled onto Surprise valley about 8 years ago. We were coming up from Gerlach NV and it was running late so we planned to camp in the Cedar pass campground. We stopped for gas in Cedarville and saw a sign for the hot springs. The sign needed a bit of restoration so we asked if the hot...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cigarette plugs

We actually removed the FWC USB panel and wired three three sockets in our front dinette Fleet - one behind each seat just below the counter and one below the front window. Getting in and out of the seats no longer dumps electronics onto the floor. It's not a particularly difficult job, as 12 V...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cigarette plugs

We are on our 5th generation of plugs. First 1 A, then 2 A, then 3.0 Quick Charge, then PD&QC. We now have 2 GaN 60 W plugs to run our laptops and the other plugs are at least Quick Charge 3.0. Expect to replace your plugs every few years, if only because the technology changes. I'd look for...
