RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Reflectix insulation

@ carld, the discussion beginning on lower Pg. 2 in this thread: http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/topic/6428-cold-weather/page-2 may be pertinent to your summer situation, as it has been for mine here in AZ. You can rest assured that a cheapo Reflectix solution will certainly result in a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cottonwood Canyon considerations + Turnbuckle Trouble

"As long as it's tight the turnbuckle will not back off" You said it all. My reference was to a situation when the nut didn't hold and came loose, which hopefully wouldn't happen in any but the most extreme circumstance. Tight against the turnbuckle body should get the job done.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cottonwood Canyon considerations + Turnbuckle Trouble

I think we need to take another look at this nut-on-the-turnbuckle thing, even though it's been covered before in previous turnbuckle threads. It seems clear to me that a nut placed on the outside of the normal-threaded J-hook side isn't likely to hold the turnbuckle in place in the event it...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Windows. Are more better?

Not necessarily. In our Grandby shell, even the standard wide passenger window (w/ louvered slats and emergency egress awning pane) is covered up with a curtain for a large part of the time. Maybe we're just too lazy to open it back up, since we often use that window area for daily storage of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lanterns, flashlights and lighting - post yours

@ Old Crow: On your 2 folding panel lanterns I'll presume you tried this? (from another forum's comments): "It arrives from the factory in 'try me' mode. Remove all batteries and put them back in... no more cutoffs or flashing. This technique also works when the batteries are going low and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

Those standard jack pads are cross-ribbed underneath and are as sturdy or more so than lynx-style levelers, same general type of material, inexpensive, lightweight, highly utilitarian. I can't see that a hi-lift would punch through or crack a pad, but could I be wrong? Sure, but I'd bet on it...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

You probably noticed the center hoop occupies the middle portion of the inside of the shower tarp By leaving the oval 'unlinked' at the tarp opening, the hoop's natural rebound gives flex structure to the middle portion so that the wind doesn't blow the tarp up against you when showering...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

Here's a pic that should give you a good idea; you can zoom in on the gory details. It might not be pretty but it's a quick and easy setup-takedown, takes a stiff breeze fairly well, and we sure enjoy our showers after an active day out and about. Rico

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

Jack brackets are good places for a custom shower mount. An aluminum rod can be mounted to any of the brackets, then a swivel PVC support structure for the shower tarp enclosure. It works very well for us.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Grandby in a full size short box

DR, I have a couple pics for you showing my 1" angle iron and secondary support chains for shoring up the overhang, but the WTW uploader isn't working for me lately (Webmaster: I can't believe this is still a problem for folks trying to attach pics!). Please PM me if you'd like me to email them...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dispersed Camping in Anza Borrego SP

Yep, lots of possibilities. If you plan on having a ground campfire out there in the sticks you'll want to bring along a standard metal trashcan lid to use as a base for your fire, it's required. TrueValue hardware store in Borrego Springs also has these lids for individual sale. If you...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Grandby in a full size short box

I can't speak to your specific truck setup whatever that may be, but our '11 Grandby shell works quite well in the 6.5' bed of a '11 Nissan Titan King Cab. In our case, there's 16" of camper overhang after removing the 70-lb tailgate, with a bonus of being able to suspend "stuff" underneath the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Camper Rain Gutters Anyone?

Chris, Four years ago I bought some of that white EZE RV & Marine Gutters product; 10-ft roll at ~ $2 per foot. It has worked very well for me in exactly the application you're envisioning. Rico

Not spray-foamed exactly, but did apply UVA foam panel sections with contact cement 'wrapped' all around the lower (wood) portions of the camper, also have an exterior wrap of reflectix around the vinyl. Seems to help... (unclear on what's up (down?) with the WTW image uploader, but can't get...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton

Yep, in my case, the only (!) truck I could find at the time that gave me adequate legroom (even w/ adjustable steering wheel) was the Titan, and its max bed length was 6.5'. So it was a matter of just making it all work together the best I could. I'll have to admit the shorter wheelbase of a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton

Atlin, welcome to the forum. I'll play the usual odd-man-out again on this topic. I've done basically what you're envisioning, but with a Grandby shell on a Nissan Titan King Cab (6.5' bed). The tailgate was removed to enable access to the spare tire hoist and to jettison ~ 70 lbs of what I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lava Beds Nat'l Monument - anyone been recently?

"Hidden gem" is an apt descriptor of Lava Beds NM. The camping brims with solitude (at least when we were there in late Sept), and the caves are a lot of fun. But it's the overall general sense of isolation in big sky country that really does it for me. A return trip there is planned for the...

Welcome to ya, Rider. I know your neck of the woods well, having been part of the soil survey of Rio Arriba County back in the early 80s, living in Chama for a number of years. And I remember a lot of high-clay soils that make up a large portion of the road surfaces, nice and slippery and...
