RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Foraging for fungi

Andy, I just slice the boletes medium thin and lay them on parchment paper in my oven. You don't want to slice them too thin or they end up the thickness of paper. I have an old propane oven with a pilot light that keeps it just warm enough to dry the mushrooms quickly. If I ever replace that...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Foraging for fungi

I'm comfortable collecting some of the boletes that appear in my neck of the woods. I had neighbor who had hunted mushrooms all her long life. She tried to teach me, but I only feel confident about the boletes here. I like to slice and dry them for storage, then add them to omelets.

Thanks for another grand trip report. Those petroglyphs in the canyon are something else. And yeah, that moonlit photo is a real winner!

Enjoyed your trip report! That was a pretty epic journey across the country. Glad you enjoyed Lincoln and Capitan on your way back. Sorry to hear your Pietown experience included a bad waitress.

I too feel that we have been sliding into a very different world. Here is a pic of a view off the Crest Trail in the White Mountain Wilderness of New Mexico. It was taken in late May, 2012. Less that two weeks later the Little Bear fire ripped through here with intense crowning and left...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Eagle and Ford Ranger

It is 83 inches to the top of the Fantastic Fan vent for my '99 Ranger/2008 Eagle combo. As you have already been warned, it can be different for you, so take the measurement with the appropriate grain of salt. FWIW, my camper was built for a Ranger, so has the notch cut out over the unused...

Happy equinox, everyone. The apple trees down the mountain are starting to blossom, but so far at higher elevations, the flowers are biding their time.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fishing gear questions?

Tying flies in the camper is a good way to spend a rainy evening. I usually tie the flies I think I will need ahead of time, but sometimes carry a travel vise, some tools (bobbins, scissors, etc.) and a selection of hooks and materials to tie a few patterns that should work in the area I'm...

Enjoyed the video and links, Ski. Your friends actually had official training? We learned on the job. This year with (hopefully) two more volunteers, we should do some training sessions. Bigfoot, what a great vista toward Shasta. Here's a pano from Huckleberry LO near Oakridge, OR. And...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fire Lookouts

I thought I would start this topic, since I have a love of fire lookouts, and I didn't want to continue hijacking another thread on gps units that drifted into discussing the PLSS which then drifted into the Osborne firefinder. I'll start the thread with a link to a short blog about last year's...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West GPS targeted at the RV and/or Senior crowd..... + pre planning tip.

Can't report a smoke from the fire lookout without giving the legal description down to the quarter section. It's hard to be accurate when you can't see the base of the fire.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fishing gear questions?

#4 6 foot bamboo sounds like it will do extremely well!! There's no way I can afford a trout grass rod. I've not fished for nearly as long as you, so I had room to accumulate some Tenkara gear, especially since the price is right. Some good looking fish in your post. I've yet to fish for...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fishing gear questions?

I second GroovyDad on Tenkara for minimalist fishing on small waters. I think it would be a good and inexpensive way to get into fly fishing. You can use western flies as well as kebari. You don't need a multitude of different flies, either - just the old standbys such as Hare's ear nymph...
