RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Los Padres Loop

Riff Raff is always a hit or miss issue in Rose Valley. Can be heaven or can be hell. Do get the combination from the Forest Service and go through the gate. The road is steep, but not rutted, still traces of the old pavement in place. You will need 4wd, but nothing special. There is a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ebbetts Pass

Ebbetts Pass has a special place in my memories. I have ridden my bicycle up it many times in Fall, starting at Markleeville Hot Springs, finishing in Murphys, where we started our trip four days earlier. Without question, the most beautiful, scenic pass in the Sierras. Love that ride.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley in March with my Dad

Thanks for all the replies and words of encouragement. Dad is all excited, researching areas he wants to go and check out. Reservations have been made, not easy this time of year. Just have to gather the necessary various types of drink and food, wait for the date and off we go. I will report later.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 3 (not very smart) ladies take a trip to Saline Valley

As a member of SAR for almost 14 years, I can tell all sorts of stories of people making simple mistakes with grave consequences. Sometimes we wonder how they can be so lame, but I know if I were put on the streets on New York City, I would probably be dead 3 days. As a group, from experience...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley in March with my Dad

My brother and I are planning a trip to Death Valley in March with my Dad. He is turning 90 in May and he mentioned he has always wanted to to there. I never knew that, quite a surprise. He is in good health and can walk, but hiking is not in the works, The Racetrack is Ok, but nothing rough. I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Your Satisfaction with Spot Satellite/GPS Messenger?

I have used a Spot on a few occasions. Once a friend and I were on a long Death Valley trip and we would "check in" with our wives with it. They really liked to follow us on our journey and see exactly where we were. I again used it with my wife in Death Valley, letting a friend know our...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West The Perfect Duffel Bag

I use duffel bags from Patagonia. They make a waterproof bag with a waterproof zipper in several sizes that are as tough as can be. You can't kill 'em.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Herdina Park/ Willow Flats Road - Arches NP

I had the same issue while in Utah, I went into "The Wave" in March. It is a long dirt road, muddy, some snow on it and the rangers were not optimistic that it would be passable. They showed me pictures of it. "If you get stuck, we will come looking for you in June", was the answer I received...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Monitor Pass - July 2012

Nice report. Lots of memories for me concerning Monitor Pass. I have climbed it many times on my bicycle so I know it very intimately, at least the pavement. Hit 61 going into Markleeville, never so scared in my life.

Nice. I love Baja, been there many times. Problem is, you can travel 1,000 miles and still miss it. "You should have been here yesterday...." Ask me how I know.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Memorial Weekend Mudfest

Nice recovery story, nice attitude. Yeah, cold works for mud or snow, the colder the better. I have used the nights freeze to get out early the next morning. I had a pretty good two day recovery affair last month in Death Valley. If you go off the grid, there will be times you get stuck. Smiling...

Pretty cool. I love seeing low technology turn out nice items. A sharp contrast to us who have all of this electric, variable speed, steel and cast iron tools.

Nice area. I disagree about driving on Playas. The tire tracks you leave will last for years. Better to walk.

That area of Utah, well all of Utah, is just outstanding. Thanks for the post and pictures. White Pocket should be on everyones bucket list. You wonder what some people are thinking, the Civic stuck is such a area. Lucky for her, good on you.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley 2nd time, didn't turn out so well

I know that steel wheels have advantages over alloy, but in all of my years of driving off road, I have never have had any issues with alloy. If you shatter one, you are going too fast. I know they break instead of bending, but I have never had anything like that happen to me. In all of my years...

Nice shots, nice that you were to get out for a one-nighter. Your photos brought back many memories. I have ridden my bicycle over MP many times to Markleville and beyond. Love that area, wish I could get back there more often.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Moab camping areas

I have always wanted to drive to "The Dollhouse". I have hiked up to it from the Colorado River and the area is just outstanding. It is a long dirt road, 50 miles if I remember right, not a easy one, but your short wheelbase jeep should be OK. Research it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Week in Tahoe, my TR

Nice trip, looks like you got a little of everything. Who gets to ride the hardtail? The last time I was up Steven's Pass was on a bicycle tour with my wife. We stopped at the top to find some very unhappy backpackers. The restaurant was closed and they were looking very forward to a few...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley 2nd time, didn't turn out so well

The reason I don't think hub centric wheels are the cure is because so many wheels are now lug centric. Almost every truck I look at, and I have been looking, the fronts are lug centric. Hard to tell on the rear with a glance, the front is easy. After seeing how the lug nuts were working their...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley 2nd time, didn't turn out so well

Yes. They are not hub centric, but lug centric. The chamfer on the wheel is the same as other wheels I looked at for comparison. It should not make a difference if the wheel is hub or lug centric.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley 2nd time, didn't turn out so well

So the 10,000 dollar question is how did this happen. To go back a bit, about 7-8 months ago, the same thing happened. I thought that the tire people did not tighten the lugs correctly, so I took the truck back and they fixed the problem to my satisfaction. About 3-4 months ago, I switched the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Death Valley 2nd time, didn't turn out so well

This picture shows the spindle. You can see how 3 of the 4 jam nuts have been ripped off. The 4th doesn't look so good. The disc hat had these holes blown out by the pressure of the studs and nuts jamming inside the hub. Pure carnage.

I went to DV a few weeks ago with a friend and had a more than great time. Went again with my wife, different result. Well..... we had a good time, but it was not what we expected or wanted. Made it about 7 miles down to Eureka Dunes when there was a truck parked in the middle of the road. I...
