Warner Valley lakes this past summer. Filled up again after many dry winters. The wet winter of 10/11 did the trick. Pano from my point/shoot on way down the switchbacks.

Warm to cold seems fine, cold to warm is bad??? My friend brought his very cold camera into the camper and of course it immediately fogged. Of course it was a Pentax so probably a Nikon would never have this problem. :lol:

Just a word of caution (hopefully not covered in some other post) regarding cold temps and camera gear. Camping at Mickey Hot Springs/Alvord area last year over New Years weekend with temps going below zero for a few nights, I remembered to keep my camera/lens in cab and not let it get warmed to...

If my memory serves me well, we had to use the planks for 3-4 similar crossings to reach the hot springs. Used my contractor's lumber rack for transport. So add burly planks/rack to the ongoing list 10 (or more) essentials for Great Basin Desert travel kit.

Good points Home Skillet. Can be very sketchy traveling alone but a lot of us enjoy it or just do the trips out of necessity sometimes out of convenience. Have considered the Spot myself.

Far side of Alvord, accessed by road going towards Mickey Hot Springs. There is a northeast Playa entrance not far from here that I use in better weather.
