    How do you plan trips?

I used to use paper maps, but there are some features in Google Maps that are really nice: Make your own map for planning at home. They also work on your phone on the road, if you are in cell range. Otherwise you'll lose this info. Store maps on your phone using the Offline Maps feature. Then...

To build or to rebuild... That is the question

Not familiar with F150, but our Tacoma tailgate is very easy to remove and install. You could find another backup camera and mount it, or do like I did and remove the camera from tailgate and affix it to the camper.

Newbie Tire Help forTacoma w/ Fleet Shell (P vs LT?)

ctopher, nope I didn't try airbags. I know most on this chat site use them. A few people have punctured theirs. You pump them up with a compressor, right? I'm enjoying installing and forgetting about our Sumosprings -- no air to deal with. In our case, the Sumosprings lifted the back end...

Newbie Tire Help forTacoma w/ Fleet Shell (P vs LT?)

I think the answer is "it depends", the usual answer to engineering questions. Your camper, a shell, should be lighter than ours. I was comfortable using the P-rated kevlar tires that came on our Tacoma. Yours are P-rated from the 112 rating. More here in this thread on comparing P and E...

Suspension/shock advice for 2nd gen Tacoma 6' bed with 8' camper

Instead of airbags, we added Sumosprings , black, to our 3rd gen Taco. Works great. Do a little reading about ‘em. All camper weight went to our rear axle. I suggest you weigh your truck befor and after to see if yours is similar.

    Exterior lighting not working

Yeah, had several problems. Switch is a pain. Usually we get partial brightness. Sometimes nothing.

    Canyon advice

The big problem with weight behind the axle is it takes weight off the front. That affects braking and fore/aft balance.

    Cell phone coverage

I looked up the "mature" Verizon plans, but it seems only three states offer. One is Florida, I forget the others. How ya finding those plans?

    Cell phone coverage

We use Verizon which seems to work better in the mountains. I’m surprised at some of the places that work. It’s expensive though. Haven’t compared with ATT but T mobile is considerably worse where we travel (WA and CA mostly). We also have InReach so maybe if we were more willing to forego email...

    Decisions, Decisions

I would think, things being equal, a higher BTU furnace might use the same battery power as a lower. Maybe less if the air comes out hotter. Theoretically it would run for a shorter time until the thermostat kicks the heater back on again. but... this is all theory!

How do you mount it, or place it in the camper so it doesn't jostle around? Have a photo?

    How many nights in 2019?

We had a good year — about 90 nights. That’s way more than we envisioned!

    getting (un) stuck

Ha! A friend turned me on to Matt's Towing and Recovery videos. Next thing you know, I watched a couple dozen. He's pretty down to earth and kind to his customers. There's an interesting video on how he built up his Jeep for towing. Some of his methods might be frowned on by academics, but he...

Sleddog, did you cover the top plywood with vinyl or carpet? It sounds good that it's comfortable with bare feet.

Hawk and eagle shell weights across years

Jim, good on ya for losing 10 lbs! I hadn't gone back to compare our estimates with reality. Ya got me curious. It turned out pretty close if we had 1/4 tank of fuel and didn't bring a couple week's worth of food. The estimate assumed 10 gals water. Here's our estimates for the Tacoma/Fleet...

Anyone thinking about a new Truck

iowahiker, your numbers for power generation efficiency sound way high. Do you have a source? I recall from engineering school numbers way under 50%, but perhaps things have improved. My biggest problem with electric trucks, carrying campers or trailers, is range. Instead of 300 mi range, drop...

1997 Toyota Tacoma Suspension Upgrade for FWC Eagle

Be aware that nearly all the weight of the camper is on the rear axle. In our (2018) Tacoma 6' bed, access cab (the shorter cab), Fleet with some of the extras, our weights were: Front 2700 lb empty, 2760 lb with camper (virtually no change) Rear 2000 lb empty, 3480 lb with camper It would be...

new Tacoma and FWC build advice

Instead of air bags, you might consider Sumosprings. No air to worry about. They've worked fine for us, and with the camper off there's a gap, so the truck would ride nearly normal. We used the black ones. Our Taco/Fleet doesn't have any other suspension changes (Taco is an "off road" which...

So you like to go on really rough roads...

I recall a video of a test running very low pressure over a nail or sharp object. But I can't find it! Anyway it showed how a tire would kinda mold over the sharp object instead of get punctured. Let me know if any of y'all have seen it.

So you like to go on really rough roads...

I've only used the rear diff once in our Taco, other than fooling around testing it, right here in the Slate Range (blue dot): https://caltopo.com/m/L021 It was pucker-factor steep (for me), and I had my wife walk to the top to check it out. Slipping sideways, either right or left, was not an...
