RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Health scare and trip planning

Posted this elsewhere, this may be a better fit; “The low woods and desert around here out of the snow have been LOADED with campers/mtn bikers/vanlifers/snowshoers/hikers/fishermen and women; and who knows what else since the lockdown began.” Looks like any other Memorial Day Weekend here...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West When the Coronavirus Crisis Ends, What Do You Want to Do?

Frankly, I’m looking forward to seeing and recreating with my adult children again. I had a couple raft trips with one planned in Montana and another was going to meet me for a few days of camping and fishing in BC. Those trips are both canceled. If the US/Canada border opens I may get there...

Yup, pretty congenial crowd on here IMO. As I’ve stated elsewhere on here, this is the first forum I joined, back in November 2009. I’ve followed a few other forums since that time, but always find this one the pleasant place to check in on and occasionally leave a comment or two. Feel free to...

Retired???!!! Congratulations. About to be there myself. I actually posted here about receiving my thank you for your service and now hit the road papers. Circumstances delayed their filing. The project that facilitated my prolonged servitude is wrapping up so it won’t be long now. Again...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Columbia and Snake rivers

I’ll second the the seasonality/temp factor in making a decision. Luckily, and rather dependent on where you are along either River, you can divert into National Forest or higher elevation BLM and beat the heat a bit. After that upstream or down wouldn’t make a lot of difference IMO. That is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Crater Lake

There is a state hwy, Hwy 62 I think, that passes through that’s open all year. The Rim Rd and such are usually open by July 4th, though as mentioned a good snow yr may delay that. They have a pretty aggressive plow program that may have it open earlier. In the 70’s my Dad took us there in my...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Earth Day is Today

I wasn’t a senior, but was in school. I remember going on a trash patrol around the school neighborhood, complete with Jonny Horizon trash bags. I thought by end of the 70’s we had environmental conservation figured out. I was wrong.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West A Milestone

Shoot, I missed a big milestone. Back in November 2019, I had been a member of Wander the West for 10 years. It’s actually the first forum I ever joined, and I credit it with helping me with my fears of the internet. And my Ranger had about 230K on it when I hit the 10 year mark.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West the owners manual says to use 4x4 once a month

The purpose is not just to move lube, depending on your system. If your system uses electric or vacuum actuators, the internal moving/sliding parts need periodic movement too. My old Ranger has them. It helps when doing “Maintenance four wheeling” to shift it in and out of 4wd a couple of...

Montana is fairing a little better. My son received a note today from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. Our April Lottery Permit for the Smith River will be carried over to next year.

Now for something totally different. Re-read “The Oregon Desert” by Reub Long and E.R. Jackman. Helps keep things in perspective.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How many nights in 2019?

A paltry, yet exciting 31 nights. First was New Years Day on the Deschutes River by Cedar Island. I’ll estimate the last, and coldest was outside Pray, Mt. two weeks ago. Most memorable for the year isn’t an FWC adventure, but 4 nights camped out on the John Day River as part of a float trip...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Chevy Blazer FWC camper...Seattle Craigslist

Somewhere on here or Expedition Portal are a couple write ups on on someone grafting an FWC to a Scout II and a diesel Traveller. At the time both had an appeal. I say grafted as IRC, neither of the FWC’s used were the purpose built models from the factory. Heck, I don’t know if FWC even...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Have you ever had a tire blowout?

Several: 1st was the outside duel on a 1938 International 5 Ton truck loaded with baled hay in 1978, maybe 79. Blew making a right hand turn. Thought the load would fall off, but it didn’t. Strangest was a almost brand new tire on the North Steens Loop Road on my Ranger in 1986. Blew fast...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Current Spike in Gas Prices

I use the Gasbuddy App. Besides the obvious use to actually find a station in unfamiliar areas, it’s kinda interesting to see the variation in price for a given area. I must say though, the observations you mention are interesting.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cheatgrass: Heartbreak of the West

So this begs the question, “Are we doing our part?” By that I mean as WTW’ers, are you washing down your wander wagon after each trip? Wash down your ground cloths after you camp near it, or in it? If you are a property owner are you keeping your stuff in check? My point is, that the spread...

If you’re still checking this, I see you have a Florida guide. If you get into Centralish Florida, I’ve done a project or two on the Ocala National Forest. The Forest has four wilderness areas. I have a little familiarity with the Juniper Prairie Wilderness. To start with, it has little...
