Jasan, While I concur that seat of the pants solutions are truly a hit or miss proposition, as of yet I do not believe anyone has identified an application engineer that deals with this specific FWC problem....I do not discount the value of a methodical engineering analysis and testing...

Time will tell if anyone actually lessens or eliminates tin canning on a FWC that is as bad as on my Hawk....roof coating would have to be damn thick to hold down the top sheet from fluctuating/bouncing up and down in a wind...and 'sound proofing' will only come when the movement of the slack...

Thanks for that....resonating/vibrating produces sound, of course in varying frequencies and amplitudes...cause of that movement and how to stop or greatly lessen that movement is the crux for dealing with our TC in FWCs. If tops sheet only "quivered" the sound might be a hum, but the rapid and...

Craig, I used that sound damping material on the underside of the transmission tunnel in '62 Corvette after installing Tremec 6spd which initially had gear noise....worked OK but did not really stop trans noise; just lessened it. No bigee as I drive with top down and use ear plugs. Good for...

I will take another look at the sound dampening sheets/material referred to in these posts….my take is that lessening sound or temperature via these insulations to attenuate them is an entirely different proposition that stopping the long wave movement of the aluminum top sheet as it creates tin...

Vic...I have and continue to admire your ability to construct not just electrical systems but structural components. Not so much for me. If I can't "KISS" it, then my judgement is to leave it alone so I don't make matters worse. Removal of my top liner and doing the retro-fix you describe...

Thanks to all for chiming in....first, I experimented with laying a rigid weight "east/west" [laterally] at 90* to top frame members....did not work, since frame to top sheet areas under that brace were at the frame height and top sheet had 'troughs' and 'peaks' below that frame to frame level...

Thanks Pat...shipping costs are through the roof for 6 foot lengths....nominal cost for 2"x1/4" is $6+ per foot....right now Amazon seems the best bet... Question for Collective Wisdom: Is the bar length or the bar weight the most significant factor in reducing tin canning ? Perhaps there is...

Take that to FWC... Regardless of the 'why', right now my money is on weighting down the loose/distorted sections on the top sheet between the top longitudinal frame members...I will try aluminum bar, unless someone has a better idea of how to lessen or stop the TC.

New Information: First FWC says that tin canning almost always is associated FWC that have had a snow load. Take that at their word. I guessed that the top sheet on my '16 Hawk is about 88 sq/ft.....using the table in this article [scroll down for chart] you can see that any appreciable snow...

Good thinking by many on this...would add that wind direction varies as does velocity during the tin canning.. My experience although not well defined is that wind coming from a frontal direction cause more tin canning that from abeam. No hard data points. Hatching a plan to put lateral flat...

OK...but replacing the existing single sheet smooth top sheets with a corrugated one is not feasible...and I do not believe ATC tops are one piece...could be wrong. If FWC smooth top lacks sufficient rigidity how do you dampen the tin canning? I am not by any means an engineer but it seems...

I really doubt that there is a "rebuild" solution that is feasible. Not just in terms of numbers and time but honestly how would they be 'repaired'? New top sheets securely glued or screwed to aluminum frame? Like I posted a long time ago my position is that this now my problem to deal...

Regardless of the "mechanism of injury'....the method of attaching the top sheet to the struts/rafters/top frame failed; VHB has not held. If the top sheet was truly held down, the bubbling and tin canning would not occur.

Paul, I do not know what the FWC "cargo racks" look like but your description sounds like they indeed buttoned down the top sheet. Two racks? Front and rear? If I read this correctly you have 5 transverse 'bars' pinning the top sheet down...fore and aft. My FWC Yakima rails are longitudinal...
