Not a fun trip per se, but an evacuation...

We left our home, about 40 miles north of Charleston SC on Sunday. Evacuated up to Raleigh. Managed to get most of our toys out of the danger zone but sadly, too many other things had to be left behind. The storm will pass to the north of our house as a CAT 1 hurricane. So we are hoping...

I am starting to really dislike my camper solar

Hoyden, Vic is spot on with his summation! Great post Vic! While we think solar panels are all-capable, again, remember, published panel data/capability by vendors often reflects perfect alignment to sun and conditions. You will never see these conditions with a fixed, roof mounted panel...

I am starting to really dislike my camper solar

Hoyden You have a problem either between the panel and controller, controller to batteries or a combination of both. Your panel should be charging your house batteries in full day sun without issue, unless your frig is running full time. My first task would be to chase the wires from the...

I am starting to really dislike my camper solar

Bill Short answer you need shore power (AC through a converter to DC) to achieve Bulk charging, unless you have a HD alternator. I am aware some people/vendors profess that bulk charging is achievable through solar panels and vehicle alternators, but, laboratory testing has demonstrated such...

I am starting to really dislike my camper solar

Hoyden Sounds like you need to have your system checked out by a tech knowledgeable in solar. Full sun all day long should keep the batteries in the 12.0+ range, unless your frig is constantly running. We keep our frig on setting 2, sometimes, but rarely, 3. No need to go any colder as...

I am starting to really dislike my camper solar

I will chime in and try to keep things simple. I have a 2015 Hawk (started camping in it 4/16/15) after installing two Optima Blue Top Deep Cycle AGMs. They are still in the camper and performing at about 90% efficiency compared to new. Not half bad for 41 month old batteries. But, the key...

    Overland Expo East

We've been to 3 OX-West and 2 OX-East. Definitely worth the effort and new price if you've never been. OX-East is about 1/2 - 2/3 the size of West. But still a worthwhile event to attend. I would recommend the Overland Experience package at least once. We bought the OE package at our first...

Sadly, we have to pass this year. New pricing structure makes it prohibitively expensive for us now that we both are retired.

    Outside Kitchen, Mark II.

Very nice setup! Rather than tote extra propane bottles, I just remove one of the camper bottles from its compartment and use it to fuel our Partner Steel stove. Unless raining, we cook outside regardless of temp. As Eddie stated, food just tastes better! Lynn preparing "Spaghetti alla...

    Tool Kit Ideas

My take on tools... Select tools to perform common repairs of parts that fail due to use and not due to lack of preventive maintenance. If the latter, you'd might as well pack your shop in a trailer and pull it behind you :D . The airlines rebuild/replace 90% of all parts on an airplane in...

The latest and greatest in cell phone boosters?

This article should answer all questions regarding boosters. Boosters can be designed specific to vehicles, house, commercial buildings. An important note that was previously mentioned, a booster will not capture and boost a signal if you do not have a signal. Hence the caveat, you must have...

Hodakaguy's Overland Tacoma Builds - FWC Combo

Very nice airplanes! Thanks for sharing! Good tip and yes, I use dialectic grease on those connections and refresh same every year on my boat. I refresh the grease on the camper connections when I think about it. You guys are beyond masters in fabrication and metalsmithing. A&Ps as well...

Hodakaguy's Overland Tacoma Builds - FWC Combo

Tom... What did your dad and uncle fly? Your dad must have been a fighter pilot since he is using two hands to describe the flying event. I'm an old retired Marine fighter aviator. Mike at Master Repair in Stuart, FL (boat rigger) turned me onto PowerWinch plugs and socket for a very robust...

Bottom, front rubber molding blew off my 2014 Hawk!

Happens every time I head out west. Heat and sun causes the molding to expand and before long wind will force the molding out of the channel. Sounds like a someone is beating the side of your truck. I've trimmed the molding and secured with all kinds of adhesive, but, seems to happen every...

Easy way to remove dead bugs from front of Hawk?

Great idea Larry!!!! In so far as a preventive measure and to help remove bugs, after cleaning the frontal area, spray PAM (nonstick cooking spray) on a clean rag and wipe the area. Makes removing dead bugs much easier. Someone posted this tip a few years ago when i asked this very question.

Fresh water and Grey Water ?

Should be able to buy Clorox or any generic brand bleach at the grocery store. Just be sure you are buying the unscented variety. Seems like manufacturers now offer all kinds of scents in detergent and bleach these days. We prefer all cleaning agents to be unscented, especially for the...

Fresh water and Grey Water ?

What Vic said... You only need a couple of tablespoons of unscented, full strength bleach for a 20G fresh water tank. Health officials recommend mixing the bleach in 1 gallon of water, pour that into the fresh water tank, and then fill your tank normally (I don't understand why). Drive around...

FWC Hawk ( Generator Question )

I've been using the Honda EU2200I which is rated 2200W and 18.3A maximum output. 1800W and 15A rated for continuous operation. As you calculate your electrical requirement, watts and amps, just remember that starting amps for an appliance is generally 3 times the amps required to operate the...

Installing a Stove in my Eagle

Ron, actually you can delete it, however, you do not get a credit. At least you could in 2015. I nearly did so. The pumping still would have been there, just no cooktop.

Installing a Stove in my Eagle

I have a flush mount cooktop in my Hawk. My advice...DO NOT install one! We only use our cooktop to boil water for tea/coffee, Trader Joe's oatmeal and that's about it. We don't want the cooking odors and grease associated with cooking meals embedded in the camper fabrics. We have a 16" 2...
