RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pipe heater 'tape' or other ideas to prevent freezing while traveling

Was thinking.. I have heated seat covers which get much too hot.. and if the truck doesn't mind them, I'm sure a small heating element would be fine. Each seat is about 25 watts. Seedling tray warmers are about 17 watts.. I guess I have my plan for this trip. Seedling tray warmer is how...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pipe heater 'tape' or other ideas to prevent freezing while traveling

Thanks, Those are great ideas for the long term.. Might be helpful for others, too, if I got a good system worked out. But... I can't get that done before I hit the road in the morning. I'm probably fine, either way.. 20's aren't THAT cold. And I have my cabinets and windows insulated.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pipe heater 'tape' or other ideas to prevent freezing while traveling

Hi, Has anyone used water pipe heaters, or a small electric heater, or even run their propane while on the road, to prevent the water lines from freezing? I know we'll be OK while camping.. It's above freezing during the day at our destination, and we'll have the furnace for at night. I'm...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona? (And NM)

Thanks a lot. That is actually a very helpful comment. Some of the places that are now inaccessible would make nice destinations, but I suppose they're off limits for now. And, there shouldn't be 'debate'.. These are public lands. They were accessible for 100 years in some of these...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona? (And NM)

Arg, And I'm learning a lot of the forests down there are ones the horrible disgusting rangers are surrounding and closing the roads to.. So frustrating.. And it's all recent. Like, plenty of websites saying to see things and camp in these areas.. Then I dig deeper and see they've been...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona? (And NM)

Thanks, Yeah, I looked up weather last night to start my planning, and NM is a much colder state than I had realized. Will definitely need to fill the propane tanks! Or reconsider my plans.. Maybe drive straight through NM, too. Looks like it finally gets warm around Tucson and west of it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona? (And NM)

Very similar to Ski3pin's post.. I am going to visit my sister around Tucson in a couple weeks. Only coming from the opposite direction. I'll be coming from the east. I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations from the northeast corner of New Mexico through to Tucson Az. Or warnings...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Do all battery separators suck?

I'm late to the party, but as others have said, it's the 10 gauge wire. Put in 4 or 6 and it will be OK. It's odd they still use it, as it seems everyone has problems. There is very much wrong w/ this. Joining facebook is NEVER the answer. Putting technical support information in a closed...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West draining water tank in winter?

A lot of us camp all winter. And everyone has a different level of risk they are willing to take. Some leave the system dry and use bottles and buckets during the winter. Lots of us, though, just use the water system. If it's well below freezing, leave the cabinet doors open so the furnace...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Winter Camping Suggestions, and how to camp in mountain areas in winter?

I'm looking for suggestions for winter camping. Last year we did some southern forests. Some deserts in the west. But I'm interested in playing in the snow, too. I have seen posts from people who camp and ski all winter. I'm curious where.. Are there dispersed camping opportunities in/near...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

Thanks, your camper layout sounds to be exactly like mine. I did replace my 10 gauge truck to battery wire w/ 4 gauge, but that was very difficult.. Because I did not slide the camper back on the flat bed. My arm barely squeezes in the space between the camper and truck bed. Sliding it back...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West cleaning sink drain pipe?

Mine has been modified to have a gray water tank and some other things, so I'm not sure if my drains are stock.. But they appear to be made from automotive fuel line tubing. Should hold up to just about anything. When I first got my camper the gray water tank was clogged and I put hardcore...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

Thanks Paul, I hadn't seen his site yet. I'm not really worried about the end of society, but personal family comms is what I'm trying to do. The grid has never been 'up' in the places I go :). Looks like great resource.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

Yes, about the radio. Looking at icom id-5100. Unfortunately, the mic plugs into the radio, and not the face, so that's another wire. Unfortunately the mic/handset won't do audio out, so that's another wire for speaker. Unfortunately I have a redarc manager and the power from the truck...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

Junction box is a great idea.. Solves all the problems, I think. Other than still needing to drill a hole through the camper and truck bed. I'm thinking about less destructive, less convenient options, at least to get started. Mounting the radios in the truck. Then when I camp, running a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Folding sink faucet

If you mean the spout where water comes out was leaking at the base (so water was pooling where the faucet comes out of the sink, on top of the sink), I repaired mine. It had cracks in the base, and was leaking. The threads are completely worn. It just slides on and off now. I put super...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

I have been thinking about installing the radio itself in the battery box, because there is enough room in there. But then I'll have antenna wire to get outside. And I'll have the control head and audio wires which ideally I'll route to both the truck and the camper, so I can plug in the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

I'm adding a ham radio system to my camper and need to pass some wires into the camper. The camper power lines currently go through the front wall of the camper, but that wall is difficult to access from both inside and outside the camper. I'm thinking about drilling a hole through the floor...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Removing toilet or water heater - exterior hole

Has anyone removed their toilet or hot water heater? I'm thinking about it.. and wondering what would be good to cover the holes in the walls. Would you try to match the siding, or just cover the holes w/ fake doors or access panel type covers? edit to say, I just realized it's my campers...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Winterizing.

I also simply drain it. I camp all four seasons. I have a hot water heater. I open all valves and drain the system before I head home. And leave all the drains open, faucet open (but pump turned off) while I'm driving, to shake out any water. The one line I can't imagine would get cleared...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Insulated Thermal Pack?

There are definitely threads here where people made their own out of insulated fabric, but I don't think those same people had a regular one to compare it with.. They were happy w/ them, but I don't remember reading a comparison of theirs vs stock. (sry, just noticed who the OP is, and I'm...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flexible Panel, aluminum frame, too compliant (flexy)?

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll mention.. The panels are "Sol-Go", which are apparently about the same as sunpower. Couple people left sunpower and started sol-go, and use the same cells. I suppose I'll assume it was not the stomp rocket, and file a warranty claim.. See what happens. I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flexible Panel, aluminum frame, too compliant (flexy)?

I just had a ~10 month old flexible panel fail. I mounted it on a home made aluminum frame, consisting of 1/8" thick bars and longer 1/8" thick C channels. 4 bars crossing the short side. C channels making the long side. Panel bolted through its grommets and also taped to the cross bars...
