Hovenweep is very cool and anyone who has not walked around the canyon by the VC center certainly should have that near the top of their bucket list. I photographed the Sand Island Petroglyphs in May of 2014, but for some reason failed to post them to my blog. (Reminder to self to put those...

Thanks to Cayuse and allanb for setting up a trip/hike to Moonhouse on Sunday. It would be nice to have some sort of activity for us to do on Saturday, too (other than sitting around all day telling stories.) Anyone with familiarity with the area want to make suggestions?

That's good to hear. I'd wondered as I'd seen rock fire rings out there by campsites. It's always more fun to sit around a campfire when it's time to tell ghost stories ;) I'll try to bring a little firewood. If every one brings just a little, we should have plenty. Thanks, Cayuse, for being...

    My Homemade Awning

UPDATE I used my new awning scheme for the first time in the field last week and made one modification to the procedure which helped. When erected as in my original post, though with the larger tarp, it was somewhat susceptible to medium winds. This was due to the edge along the roof rising up...

Bosque Bill calls "Shotgun!" Hee, hee. Thanks, Cayuse, I guess I'm just a lazy bum or just want to leave the rig parked with the solar panel deployed. If you'll take me, then may I then have one of your permit open spots? Thanks!!!

I would love to get one of those "extra" spots, Cayuse or allanb. Looks like an amazing ruin! That's for Sunday, right? Will someone be organizing a "shuttle service" over there from VotG? That's the one thing that's less than ideal with the pop-up camper - breaking camp to drive to a trail head.

Cool and it is all about the views. Thanks for checking this out! hoyden, are you or is anyone keeping an RSVP list? Just how informal are we? I plan to attend in my Fleet. BTW, if you tried to include a photo with your post, above, it's not showing up for me. Bill p.s., here is the BLM...

    My Homemade Awning

Whereas, now that I've figured out how to put a tarp awning on either side, I'd like to figure out how to use the smaller tarp as a rain porch across the back. I went cheap on my guy lines. Got a package of four 13' lines with reflective thread and plastic tensioners on Amazon for $10. I...

    My Homemade Awning

I'm thinking of getting a second tarp the same size as the one I will be using. Then, I can use one of the carabiners and the pin on top of the tent pole to hang it from one side or the other to form a "wall" (or use both poles to have the wall on the side away from the truck.) The pins on the...

    My Homemade Awning

Inspired by this thread, I created my own homemade awning. I liked the tent pole concept, but I wanted the awning to shade the upper section of my pop-up, too. This would help the keep the inside of the camper a bit cooler besides providing shade outside. I bought the Coleman 8 foot...

Reinstalling Factory back up camera under the camper

I think short, self-taping or wood screws would work fine. No one is going to notice the camera - I have to been over and look to see it myself. The camera is very light so small screws will hold it; if you're concerned, also use a strong glue or epoxy.

    TCs and Strong Winds?

This used to drive me crazy until I figured out I could lift the latches until they moved into the position of the detent on the side - you know where there is resistance - and leave them in this partially up position and no more rattling. I had to bend the side of one latch slightly as it was...

    TCs and Strong Winds?

My FWC Fleet performed admirably one night camped near the canyon edge at Muley Point. There was no wind at dusk, so I thought I'd be OK and the view there is spectacular. In the night the wind rose and became strong and gusty, then stronger and harder. Each blast hammered my poor camper and my...

    Sightings thread

My lucky week for sightings in the ABQ area. This morning a late model Fleet sporting a Jackson Hole FWC decal on the door was found at the Alameda Open Space parking lot on a charcoal Tundra with a NM amateur radio plate. I say "late model" as it had what I believe to be one of the new-style...

Your guess was right on the money, Charlie! Their chile is always so hot it gives me the hiccoughs ;-) Yummy!

    Sightings thread

I practically never see a pop-up camper in or around Albuquerque, but saw an ATC(?) shell(?) on the back of a small white pickup on El Pueblo Road in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. We waved at each other, but kept going. I had a green chile cheese burgers to get home while still hot. :-)

House battery as helper to Truck battery

The battery separator the FWC uses (model 1314A) is unidirectional preventing the house battery current flowing to the truck battery if the house battery is at a higher voltage. You can "jump" the two terminals on the side of the separator to connect the house battery to the truck to start it...

Yes, aware of that. I was hoping there was something close by where we wouldn't have to move our campers once we were set up... unless someone volunteers to run a shuttle service :-)

Yes, nice photos, BH. Are there any hiking opportunities - other than just wandering the west? As a reminder, here are a couple of my blog posts that include Vally of the Gods. The first one has quite a number of photos, click one for larger versions; the second post only has a couple. It's a...

    front mounted bike racks

I have a 2013 Tacoma, but maybe my experience will help. I fashioned a front mount bike rack from an old rear mount rack, including a piece that allows it to insert into my front receiver hitch. It is important for the bike to be far enough off the ground you don't risk hitting a wheel when...

    Loud water pump

My water pump was very loud and I had the same concerns as you. One day I decided to poke my head into the cabinet where the pump is located in my Fleet. I discovered it was too close to a support member and when it ran it thumped the support. I jammed a piece of foam between the pump and part...
