    Owens Valley - November 2021

Really cool sleuthing and findings of petroglyphs and requisite Bday soaking! It's a shame that upper canyon is choked off with brush. We've done both right and left exits. Can't keep that Julie from climbing!

How do you level your rig?

I downloaded the app and leveled my truck, and everything's pretty cool but it's in metric. I know 2.5cm ~/= 1", but it would be easier to work in inches thanks to six decades of training. I thought the video showed inches, but can't find any setting to change. Anyone figure out how to switch...

    The Wildlife Photography Thread

Thanks for the historical perspective. Imagine half a million elk in the Central Valley when the grasses were waist-high! Only 170 years ago.

Those are some great shots, Chet. I liked the shot through the grasses and the last one, done in B&W. With those muddy conditions you must be loving those mud flaps.

Well... I did it... time to upgrade to a flatbed and new truck.

Congrats (in advance)! We ordered and received our RAM 3500 hemi earlier this year, but are still using our 2008 Hawk. Plenty to work on with better tires, adding airbags (yup, I did it again), and considering hoop steps since powered steps are unobtainium. My wife enjoys the camping, but I...

2017 Four Wheel Camper Hawk - slide in - $27k - Northern CA

I don't see a price listed on the 2017 Hawk. Maybe edit your post to include that info. BTW, I have just moved to the same truck in the gasser variant. We're still getting used to stepping into the taller truck. GLWS

    Blown airbag

Unfortunately we don't have jacks but I've moved on from that particular issue. I noticed you have Timbrens on your rig currently. We tried those first before the air springs and had a less than satisfactory ride (particularly on the local concrete causeways.) Was the Timbren product not...

    Blown airbag

Just a thought about determining "true height". If you have jacks you could undo the turnbuckles and lift the camper up to take a measure. I've been talking with Timber Grove about their high quality airbags and the owner suggests measuring the center of the truck, like your receiver...

How do you level your rig?

4 low and the truck just walks up. Love it. I use short pieces of LVL / OSB lumber for ramping up. I think my scraps are 1 1/4" thick. They are tough enough to be a jack base in the mud. I chose them because they won't crack. They do weigh a few pounds. We prefer to park backing into...

Where do you get water refills on road trips?

Good point, Wildcat. There's a water filling station at the bottom of Tioga Pass, which I think is managed by Lee Vining. Locally, my town has a spot on Bitney Springs where artesian flows have been directed to half a dozen spigots under a sheltering roof. Locals are there every day filling up...

Fantastic Fan opens itself and destroys itself: Easy to Remove and Replace with MaxxAir?

I was thinking the same thing. It's similar to the uplift created by wind over a plane wing. We replaced our FF with a Maxxair and have been very happy with the quiet 12 speed fan with instant reversing capability.

Want to Buy an ATC or FWC for My 2003 Tundra 6' Bed

First gen Tundra can carry up to a Hawk (sleeps east-west). I have the 2006 AC Tundra. I did add airbags and a sway bar along with E rated tires, which are mandatory. I also put on Bilstein shocks. As Frank said, you just have to watch the forums closely, and be ready to commit after you've...

new tires - snow rating - new truck - not worry? chains?

Thanks, Patrick. That's helpful since I hadn't considered Les Swab, or even my local NAPA. I've been shopping online, which is all too easy from my recliner  I should give the local guys a fair shot. I've never been asked to show chains to highway patrol, despite skiing Donner...

    Varmints!

I've thought about LED lights, but I would have to remember to turn them on and off, which at age 60+ won't be reliable. In many of our camping locations, running bright lights assuming leakage, would be undesirable. I like dark skies for photography and ambiance, and also prefer to keep a...
