South Warner Wilderness - July 2020

What a nice series of rambles- enjoyed all your recent trip reports. Good diversion for those of us stuck at home. Fun to see the pic of prairie smoke- one of our favorite native plants here. Also- nothing better than an empty campground. Thanks for writing up your travels. :)

    RFI: Colorado Dispersed Camping

Thanks everyone for your suggestions- keep them coming. We know it is likely to be crowded. We may defer our trip to September to increase our chances of seeing fewer people, plus it's hard to coordinate schedules with everyone. Don't want to get shut out of the mountains by snow though.

    RFI: Colorado Dispersed Camping

Finally got the camper out of the garage and loaded on the truck- a record late date for that milestone by a couple of months! It's a crazy year but the kids are after us to visit them. They live in Denver. We are thinking of meeting up somewhere in the Colorado back country where we can social...

    Bob Clark "Cayuse", RIP

Sorry to hear this. Cayuse gave us good tips for our trip through Utah and the North Rim a few years ago and was always helpful to others. RIP.

    Vic's new 2012 Puma build

Vic, don't have close ups handy but here are 3 photos- one without flaps, one with flaps on and rolled up and one secured for rain. It is a bit of work to put them on using our step stool but we like how secure the windows are from driving rain when they are on and closed- we have been through...

Tacoma + FWC best match: Access or double cab?

x2 on the payload difference- it's a wash. We have a shell camper and the access cab with a rear seat area platform and find it is plenty of room. We use a trailer when we need more gear space. I like the longer bed (and camper) and shorter wheel base. Also, the truck is more useful for hauling...

    Vic's new 2012 Puma build

There are storm flaps that attach to the velcro on the outside to cover the windows in driving rain. We remove them in nice weather. Some have turned them into little awnings and leave them on all the time. If you don't have them I'm sure you can get them from ATC. Here's one thread on them-...

    Vic's new 2012 Puma build

Nice canoe. I have paddled on Lake Umbagog- great place. My brother uses these to tie down his boat- also short. They fit under the hood or trunk lid to provide tie down points. Would work well for a bow tie...

A few pre-purchase, Bobcat buyer questions...

We have a Bobcat shell and like it. You can see our camper in our blog linked in the signature. As others have said, i would be sure to get upgraded wiring to the solar panel- 10 ga. min. We have 160 watts on the roof which is sufficient but bigger wiring would improve it. Don't have the small...

    Mind Your Declination!

Declination is not the only possible problem with compasses. Foy (and Magellan) in particular will appreciate this: somewhere I have a photo of my brother and I in the woods of northern Minnesota with our compasses pointing north at each other either side of a large boulder full of magnetite- a...

Go camping under stay at home order?

Here is an interesting article which sheds light on the flu to Covid-19 comparisons. It is dangerous to just read headlines without understanding the underlying information: "In the last 6 flu seasons, ...counting flu deaths the way we are currently counting deaths from the coronavirus—has...

    Vic's new 2012 Puma build

I agree with the comments above. Thermal bridging through the aluminum framing is a problem but most noticeable to us on the ceiling. Maybe some foam tape applied to the framing would help with that but probably marginal. Using full thickness foam sealed to the framing seems the best compromise...
