RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Features: The useful and not-so-useful

Well, I sure wish I had a picture of it. In Saline Valley there was a fellow, Desert Dave, with a beautiful travel trailer that was custom made on a Wells Cargo chassis. He forgot to turn off his propane on the way out. Still on Bat Road it went up like someone had thrown a stick (or two) of...

We, Anne and I, are likely to be heading up the Dempster, around early August. I have done it a few times before. It is one of my favorite trips. We go via the Cassaire Hwy and we also save a few days for Dawson City.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tire size recommendation for Dodge 2500 diesel with Alaskan Camper?

Would that be because the odometer needs to be adjusted to accomodate the larger diameter wheel? A larger tire would make the odometer/speedometer appear to be turning more slowly, which would make it appear that you're going fewer miles per gallon. Was this GPS documented or odometer...

Great choice on going full sized. Just be sure to do your research if you are choosing diesel. The Ford 6.0 was very problematic. If you are going diesel, you'll likely be happiest long term with a Dodge Cummins with a manual trans. It'll take you 300,000 miles+.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tire size recommendation for Dodge 2500 diesel with Alaskan Camper?

I use 285/75/17 on factory steel wheels on my 2006 Dodge 4x4. No problem at all mounting the camper, nor jacking it off ;) With your axle ratio, and especially if you have a diesel, you could use some lower rpm's! The difference between D rated and E rated is not necessarily weight carrying...

Wow! I had never seen that huge building in the background and all that parking! Must be all new since a few years ago.

Or, while you are changing trucks, you might consider a 3/4 ton from Dodge, Chevy or Ford. The mileage will be about the same as the Toyot, even better with diesel, and you won't have to do any suspension mods which can be costly and sometimes problematic.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma brakes

Check and see if you have a brake proportioning valve over your rear axle. If you do, and you have Ride Rites or some sort of rear suspension mod to raise the rear, you need to compensate the valve with a 2 inch bracket. You are likely operating on front brakes only. Search the other threads...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help Me Plan My First Trip Please! SW

I'd strongly recommend the one day river trip down the San Juan River with Wildriver Expeditions out of Bluff, Utah. http://www.riversandruins.com/ And while in the Bluff area explore the Butler Wash Road and Comb Ridge Roads and environs. A copy of The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey will...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Why did you choose ATC over FWC

Yeah I'm pretty sure they'll narrow down any camper to your liking. When I ordered my Ocelot, I had Jay check if the cab-over could be made 2 inches shorter to help retain my 2-way radio antenna where it was. ATC was not able to do this and I now understand why. It is easy for them to do...

Here is a pic from the "old" days. Look familiar to anyone? Perhaps someone can post a new pic. I haven't been there for a few years, but there is quite a difference Jeff: Here is pretty much the very same view in 1999. The trees are twice the size today in 2011!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2008 FWC Hawk for sale

My main goal is to increase storage. I'm tired of all my gear being in a pile in the middle of the camper. I'm still nailing down the details but one thing is for sure: the door is going on the side. That will free up the back wall for bikes, fuel cans, or anything else i want to bolt to the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Batteries inside or outside the camper

Having the ATC shell model, I expect to use my battery only for lights. I converted to LED lighting. I really wanted to keep the battery out of the camper and in the bed of the truck, yet out of the way. I'm using this 18 amp/hr. battery. It fit very easily to the wall of my bed, forward of the...
