    Truck / Camper Security

I have the Ravelco system on my truck. It might be there for purely psychological reasons. Before I retired and bought my truck, I had gotten by picking up ex-police cars and such at county auctions, usually for two three thousand dollars, driving it for two to four years, then scrapping it...

Anyone thinking about a new Truck

As far as electric vehicles for the masses go, nobody has yet explained to me: Where the national electric grid is going to find enough capacity to charge all of these vehicles? We have brownouts now in hot weather when everybody is running their air conditioning. New generating plants are...

    Which Alternator

A lot of people don't realize it, but the world of high end car audio - the kind of rigs that make the whole neighborhoods shake as they drive through - is heavily dependent on multiple alternator setups to power the insanely powerful amplifiers they use. Do a Google search for IMAGES on "multi...

Not too many used Alaskans around?

Your bank or credit union won't give you a loan for one? My credit union will. Usually, getting your own financing gets you lower rates than going through a middleman who is going to want to make his own profit on it.

Think someone would steal a camper in the city?

I agree with the idea of putting it on some kind of platform and removing the jacks. But it would have to a really SOLID platform, not sawhorses. I would be concerned that some stupid, bored teenagers would come along and somehow tip it off just for the hell of it. As for the likelihood of it...

Has anyone ever tried AAA (triple A) for Insurance?

Can't answer your question re: AAA. FWIW, perhaps you should look into insuring with an agent that specializes in RV insurance, such as this company: http://www.millerrvinsurance.com/ I would also recommend you take a look at this site - it will give you a few things to think about...

Upgrading Wiring to Charge Camper Batteries From Truck?

"1- buy a new AGM engine battery when I install the batteries in the new camper? and skip the DC to DC charger. My new to me truck is a 2016, so assuming its the original battery, its almost time to replace it anyway." I'm not sure why you think it's time to change your starter battery. In...

    Power for your camper

Biggest problem with modern trucks is that there isn't any ROOM under the hood to mount a second battery, which is why the modern Alaskans put the house battery in the camper itself. But that shouldn't be a problem with this truck. I had a 68 Ford pickup back in the day, and there was a ton of...

    Lichen on Roof

The only paint I've ever heard of that inhibits growth is the anti-fouling paint boaters use on their hull. Dunno if that would work on your roof or not. Could you just spray the roof with a strong solution of chlorine bleach once a month or so? Just thinking out loud . . .

    Should I modify or sell?

Like Airstream trailers, the Alaskans have achieved "cult" status. I vote for selling your current "classic" camper and getting another one - a cabover Alaskan, maybe? - rather than butcher what you have. This free advice is absolutely guaranteed to be worth every penny or your money will be...

Is my buddy smarter than I?

An interesting question. First of all "power" is watts. They absolutely don't have to be the same watts. Volts are electrical pressure, so if one set of panels is putting out a higher voltage than the other, and it raises the BATTERY voltage higher than the voltage provided by the second...

    Shore Power from Truck?

Also, be aware that some inverters produce a TRUE sine wave while others (cheaper ones) produce what is called a "modified sine wave" which is actually a modified square wave. Heating elements and most motors don't really care, but some sensitive electronics chokes on the "modifies sine wave"...

    Camper Insurance

It absolutely is different in different states. Each state has their own Insurance Commission, which mandate the kinds of coverage and sets the rates for the policies in that state.
