    Trucks and Alaskan Camper Question

Hope you're aware that truck dimensions have changed over time, and fitting a 73 camper to a 95 truck bed can possibly be problematic. Maybe you could have the seller take some measurements and send them to you, so as to save yourself a needless trip if it isn't going to fit. Good Luck! From a...

    Battery Question

Thank you. Yes, I've heard that newer trucks have higher sidewalls than the older trucks did, and that to put an older camper in one, you need to build a raised platform in the bed. I HADN'T heard about the narrowing of the tailgate. That's useful to know. I've been checking the Alaskan FOR...

    Battery Question

Thank you for the advice. I believe I'll have to start looking at the west coast CLs. Already have my truck, a 2012 F250 4x4, 6.2 gas, 50,000 miles on it, crew cab with an 8 foot bed. And, yeah, as the old truck driving song said: "Give me 40 acres and I'll turn this rig around" :)

However ...in here, about 3/4 way down pic and comments re battery, looks like they are inside: https://www.truckcampermagazine.com/camper-reviews/2016-alaskan-camper-review/ Thanks for pointing those out to me. Hard to tell, but I think Alaskan offers a second battery as an option, and the...

    Battery Question

The one in Seattle? Thanks, I saw it. I'm in upstate NY. I'm 68, and there's a lot more truth in that last line than I'm happy admitting. If I buy a used Alaskan, it's got to be in good-to-go shape, I'm not looking to get involved in a major restoration project. Thanks.

    Battery Question

Thanks for the reply. I'm probably a year to a year and a half away from having enough money to order a NEW Alaskan, so I'm trying to not bother the factory yet. (Meanwhile, I'm keeping my eyes peeled online for a used 10' non-cabover that might come up for sale.) While I wait, I'm trying to...

    Battery Question

Where exactly is the battery(s) located in an Alaskan Camper? Passenger or driver side? Front of the camper, or the rear? If I wanted to add another (AGM) battery or two, would there be room in the bed of the truck, forward of the wheel wells? I'm guessing that Alaskan doesn't use that space...

    Door Width?

Thank you! The door between my house and the attached garage is a 24" door. This gives me a pretty good idea that I won't have any problem with the Alaskan door.

Can someone tell me just how wide the door is on Alaskan campers? They look pretty narrow in pictures and videos, and I'm not really a size narrow person. Thanks.

    Interesting DIY idea.

Those of you who don't own Fords probably have no reason to hang on Ford Truck forums. Here's a link to an interesting - and CHEAP! - suspension idea that recently appeared on one that I suspect can be adapted to many other brands. Take a quick look...

    Propane problem "pressure"

Sorry about the double post. Computer glitch. BTW, not to be too pendantic about this, but we have a tendency to treat LPG and Propane as interchangeable synonyms. They're not. LPG is usually a mixture of Propane and Butane. From the Wikipedia article on the subject: Varieties of LPG...

    Propane problem "pressure"

I've heard of nitrogen purging being done by welders before they weld on or cut an old propane tank to use it for other purposes. Actually, you could use any inert gas, and argon is sometimes used instead of nitrogen, since welders have tanks of argon around for - it's either mig or tig...

    Portable solar cable length?

I've been thinking about using my ac power cord for this purpose, since I figure I would only be deploying the solar if there were no shore power to plug into. I think I will buy a short, heavy extension cord and cut it in half. The cut ends would get the connectors needed to hook up to the...

Leaving aside the insurance aspects of it, if there were a death, a charge of involuntary manslaughter might come out of it. It's really hard to say whether it would or not, as 50 different states have 50 slightly different ways of defining it. But "reckless disregard" is usually the factor...

Rookie tire and rear suspension questions

The third ply is added to some off-road tires in an attempt to add more sidewall protection. As ntsqd pointed out, it doesn't necessarily work. In any event, it has NOTHING to do with the tire's load rating. If you're carrying a camper on the back of your truck, you NEED load range E tires to...

Rookie tire and rear suspension questions

The "ply rating" is a holdover from the old bias ply days. When they needed to hold higher air pressure to handle more weight, they would literally go up from 2 plies to 4 plies to 6 plies, etc. With radial tires, they ALL have two ply sidewalls, with the exception of certain off-road tires...

    Propane Alarm

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that propane alarms are somewhat voltage dependent, and a low house battery can cause false readings. Did a little digging on the web and found an article that confirms my recollection. https://www.doityourself.com/stry/troubleshooting-a-propane-detector

Mounting solar panel using AM Solar's rocker feet

If I were concerned with attaching the tape to painted aluminum, I would cut some pieces of sheet aluminum, say 6"x6" and tape one to the roof at each point the panel foot was going to go. That way, the panel would be attached to bare aluminum, and the 6"x6" piece of sheet aluminum would have...
