Verizon phone access in BC ?

Good suggestion, A-K. Yes, there are deals to reduce the cost of the calls. Yes, you can shop via the Internet. I'm not pushing Speakout, but last I looked it was the cheapest. www.speakout7eleven.ca .

Verizon phone access in BC ?

Far as I know the cheapest and fairly reliable is Speakout available at 7-11 stores in BC. I've used it for 5 years now on visits north and it's been fine. You can get a sim card for a phone you already have if that works for you.

    Northern Vancouver Island BC ?

I think these are what you're referring to http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/backcountry-maps/backroad-mapbooks/bc-backroad-maps/ They seem to be kept up to date, more or less, although I've had some unpleasant surprises from them once or twice. Roads that weren't there any longer. But...

    camping near Sierra Valley

I'm headed up to this neck of the woods in mid-August. I noted that LIghthawk mentioned dispersed camping in his post in May and wondered what might be available. Most of the area still looks as though it's privately owned? Any forest service sites or places of that ilk in the area...

    Sierra Valley, May 2016

It looks as though I'll be headed up Sierra Valley way next month. Probably not peak birding season, but still looks pretty amazingly beautiful. I've only passed by a couple of times, but never had the chance to really explore. I noticed in the trip report that there was mention of...

    Camping in the Canadian Rockies?

Banff is less busy from September on, as well as Jasper. The big campground near the townsite (Tunnel Mountain) can stay kinda busy and is REAL busy for the Thanksgiving Long Weekend (October 8-10th). I've camped at Mosquito Creek in the autumn and found it very uncrowded. Enjoy!

    Rain noise

Spend a lot of my camping time in the Northwest, get a lot of rain. Never really bothered. Hail, on the other hand, is rather disruptive. Fortunately it's infrequent.

    Generators when camping?

Solar is pretty quiet. Don't really need the lemon wedges.

Wonderful. Thanks. Eagles have been known to take small dogs. Pity they missed these. I guess they prefer fish.

    Be bear smart

Another posting notes the guy boxed featherweight in his younger days. Might have some relevance to the outcome. Then again, as he notes, it could have come out worse for him. Then again, given no other options, I think I'd try. I've always been in favour of going down scrapping.

    Be bear smart

Also, I think he didn't have too many other options. Good to have a boxing background in those circumstances.

    Be bear smart

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/sudbury-man-punches-black-bear-1.3663954 “You want to make sure if you punch a bear that you’re hitting it straight in its snout. That's really the only thing you have on a bear that will really startle it," Rick Nelson told CBC News. (Provided)...

    Camping in British Columbia

Sounds like a fine trip. Maybe a few questions--this isn't my most travelled neck of the woods but I've covered most of that territory at least once or twice. How are you getting from Vancouver to Williams Lake? There are two routes (mainly), one via Hwy 1 (Trans-Canada) through the Fraser...

This is one for the book's!

Thanks for the warning. Actually, I had a similar (but less severe?) problem last month. Managed to jiggle the handle until it released. Whew. (If that sounds like a calm process, it wasn't.) But sure enough, the screw in the door mechanism was loose and bunged up the latch. I can see that...

    Marty & Jeff's New Toy.

Dropped by ATC this afternoon, for what I thought was a minor repair. Marty spent maybe an hour and a half putting in a new drain spigot for my water tank. Old one broke, and you need to lift the camper off the truck and therefore open the turnbuckles etc, to replace. (Old model, design has...
