RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Scamper 080S vs. Northstar TC800

No slam intended to anyone who owns a Scamper, but speaking as a tech, quality of construction is higher on the Norhstar so in general longevity is better. However, when you start going back far enough in time, maintenance tends to play a greater role than pedigree. Looks your candidates over...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 3 way fridge on DC while driving

10 amps or less from the truck charge lead is typical. The fridge manual calls for a 10.5 amp draw at 12 VDC. Comments on multiple sites noting less than ideal amp output from charge lead are pretty common. I think most of us run on propane to get around this. When operated on DC, element is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Why *shouldn't* we remove the folding metal cover of the three burner stove?

Purely optional and the majority of cooktops don't come with the cover. Lots of folks remove them and some fashion something that is more serviceable as a prep counter. :) Ardvark

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Camper Explosion

Incidence of RV fires in comparison to the total number of RVs in use is incredibly small and in this case, as with others, the details of what actually happened with the cylinder are lacking. It is unfortunate folks were injured, but it is easy to lose sight of the fact there is some level of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Equalization Charge v. boiling batteries - which is it?

Vic, At 14+ VDC your controller is trying to float the batteries so the amperage should be greatly reduced. How many amps is the controller putting out into the batteries. Normally when batteries are fully charged and in float amp input will normally be in the area of one of less. If the output...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West NT16-SE Furnace

Fan blade mounts on motor shaft. It could be motor, however hooking power to it may indicate there is nothing the matter with the furnace. If it is a converter going south putting in a new furnace will not fix the problem. Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Go camping under stay at home order?

Our state is opening as are adjoining states here in the South and we are camping starting May 1st, but will not head West until about two weeks after that. Our logic is thus. We are good at isolating, wearing masks, and have loads of hand sanitizer. We believe we can keep our distance as well...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West NT16-SE Furnace

Don't buy a new furnace. This one is fixable. Since you are describing a surge you know you have a power issue so your first step is to determine whether you have a power converter issue or a furnace issue. Since a furnace is the power pig in most campers of all persuasions, you most often will...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Go camping under stay at home order?

Hard time for all of us and I suspect we all are in the same boat. My wife and I are sitting at home in Tennessee having expected to be leaving for the West May 1st. We are staying put because this virus haunting all of us has no cure and at present there is more that is not known than is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fridge losing Propane charge

Can of compressed air works fine. Cleaning a burner is very simple to do and a dirty burner is a common problem. the auto ignition times out if the burner does not light or the flame is too weak. You can see the spark from the ignitor. It is also simple enough to remove the orifice and soak it...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fridge losing Propane charge

The burner needs cleaning. Agree. OP has not established that he has a propane system problem and given all other appliances operate fine on propane the greater likelihood is that he simply has rust or dirt obstructing his burner. Might be able to fix his problem using nothing more than a puff...

The way these thinks are built, you really can't hurt anything by throwing switches. Does that 3rd switch turn the ceiling fan off and on so you want use the fan blowing in what raising the roof and blowing out when lowering it? I can't recall. The single thought I would leave you with is folks...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Think someone would steal a camper in the city?

I think where it occurred is crucial. I know theft is a problem when things are left unattended in the BLM as I have heard accounts of that myself. I think the issue is how often it occurs at someone's home in a good neighborhood. My two cents Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Think someone would steal a camper in the city?

I wasn't of the impression the OP was storing it. I understood it was at his residence. I wouldn't store one any place unless I was checking on it routinely or there was regular security as there is where we store our fifth wheel.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Think someone would steal a camper in the city?

To me, how likely an event to occur is crucial. For example, when someone says they live in a "good neighborhood", I am assuming things like theft or vandalism are rare events. My camper sits on sawhorses and has for a number of years. I have never had my jacks off, nor have I considered it. You...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Think someone would steal a camper in the city?

Patrick, My thought is the best you can do is make it tough for thefts of convenience. Pros will always find a way, but most losses are no due to professionals. I would make sure the battery is disconnected and ideally removed. That will make it much harder to load the camper. Since you say you...

The water heater is propane only. To light the fridge, set it to gas, hold the button in and press the other button which will snap as it is a piezo igniter. Continue to hold the button in until the little marker swings over to green. Sometimes it takes more than one snap to get ignition. If the...

Worked very well in our 04 Hallmark Ute. Can't tell you how long it will run. We used our Yamaha 2000, but our preference is to only use it to cool down the camper and not leave it running when camped near others. Living in Tennessee, we are not always camped West and an AC unit is an essential...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dometic 3 way and stove issues.

A faint light on the panel of a Dometic 3-way that has an "auto" is almost always a voltage issue and the most common issue is a power converter that is bleeding AC down the DC line. Are you running on shore power? If you are unplug and try operating on battery only. Dometic says their board can...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Campsite Fees

Depends. One place we camp has specific regs stating one unit for sleep and a tent, but no other hard shell unit. We are not towing, but keep our fifth wheel there and if there in our TC, can not be using it also. I don't agree with that policy, but campgrounds can pretty much do what they want...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dometic 3 way on DC

The difficult with questions like this is calculating charge rates assumes constants between systems. The DC element in the three-way is what Dometic calls a "sustainer". It is meant to maintain box temperature only as long as the door is not open. It is not meant to be capable of dropping box...
