RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Newbie questions

Your mention of the curvy rear and the 1965 truck reminded me of one of my favorite websites for lusting after vintage campers, so I started a new thread for people to check out and add to: http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/topic/12201-links-to-alaskan-web-pages/ The truck that you're looking...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Newbie questions

Greetings sodly, those are some good looking trucks – I think an Alaskan from just about any year would look good on one of them. Here are the measurements on my 1978 8 Ft NCO (top down) the one variable could be whether or not it has the behind the wheel well storage. I’m guessing, but I’d...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Year for my "New" 8 foot Alaskan Camper Non-Cabover?

This site helped me a lot, too – glad that I could contribute. I took about 6 months to fix my camper up and was lucky enough not to have any structural damage to repair. I’ve restored a couple of old pull behind campers that had to be torn down all the way to the frame – those were a lot more...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Year for my "New" 8 foot Alaskan Camper Non-Cabover?

Good find! My camper - serial # 1276M, was built in 1978 at the Mannheim shop. From what I’ve read, they didn’t start building Alaskans until 1958, so they probably hadn’t expanded their production out to the east coast until the early 1960’s (swag). Your teardrop marker lights were getting...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 10' NCO Alaskan Camper Question

Thanks, that's the one - here's a shot that almost shows the difference in the two sides of the door; the right side is tight to the truck bed wall, the left side has about a 5" gap allowing me to stuff junk up beside the camper. I'm going to build a cargo box to strap to my tailgate for...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 10' NCO Alaskan Camper Question

Here are a few pictures of the tailgate mod that I had to do. I cut the driver's side box off flush with the rest of the camper and narrowed the passenger side box about 3", so now my camper door looks a little offset even though it is centered. I like having one side of the camper minus the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What do you use to store your camper on?

I use an old pop up camper frame. I can wheel it around to the only level spot on my gravel driveway to load it on my truck.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Alaskan Name Plate

The pictures that I've seen of the old emblems look like they had a white background, "ALASKAN" in red, green for the other lettering and brown moose antlers. Here's my interpretation of the old emblems Got any pictures of what you're working on?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Vintage 1978 Alaskan Will It Fit?

I have a similar set-up... a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 and a 1978 Alaskan 8' NCO. I had to remove some of the width of the Alaskan at the boxes behind the wheel wells so that it would fit at the tailgate, but it fit fine between the wheelwells. I also added some 1x4 to the bottom to raise the camper...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West '84 8' Caobover complete rebuild

You could put your build on a blog and then link to it from anywhere. There’s less interaction, but you only need to document it once. I was half way into a rebuild thread on one forum when the forum went belly up – all the posts and threads locked up and couldn’t be updated or modified...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West new rebuild with various questions need all guru's

    1) Prev Owner may have removed the table bracket that attached across the lower window. The PO of my camper had changed the table also. He did leave the bracket in place and saved the original table. Here's a picture of the bracket: 2) If the light has two on/off switches, then it’s probably...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West outside weather stripping on windows ?

Good looking camper, glad to see that it's out of the barn. Here's a link that might help: http://vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/4864/guide-remove-reseal-shasta-window The stuff under the window flange that's screwed onto the camper is butyl putty tape. You can get that in 50 ft rolls.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How to open upper door from inside when lowered?

Thanks for the ideas. I think that the rod attached to the handle might be the way to go. I might also look into a different style latch, I have the old lever style that pushes down to open.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West How to open upper door from inside when lowered?

Has anybody come up with a way to open the upper half door when the when the camper is lowered? I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to pull over and take a nap while leaving the camper in the down position - but I don't want to get stuck inside.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Camper Stove

When I re-did my Alaskan, I left the cooktop out. We cook outside, if we have electricity, we can use a hotplate, and if a cooktop is ever needed, all it will take is a drill and a jigsaw. I like the extra countertop space that I get.

Everything's looking good! I like the slide out seal, that should work great and it's white. The new upholstery will help you sleep better... I'd probably wake up itching all over after sleeping on 40 year old seat covers.

Welcome - from South Carolina - I guess we're the East Coast Chapter of WTW. That's a good looking camper, from the looks of the decals on the fridge, that thing has done some partying... or is fixin' to.
