Well shoot. Can't reserve Site 78 without a DMV disabled placard, and Reserve America shows all the other sites as full. I'll email Stan.

Room for one more? Thinking about making the drive down there with the family. I see that last spot (78) is wheelchair accessible, maybe I should grab site 101 instead?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

Huh, and here I thought I'd read everything about these campers in the interminable wait for it to be installed :) When I get the guts up to take it off (and confidence that I'll be able to put it back on) I'll take a pic of the underside of the camper itself. And yeah, if there are voids in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

rando - I'm going to assume you mean the underside of the flatbed itself, and not the camper. I'd guess the underside of the camper is flat (?) but I'm not sure because I haven't been brave enough to take it off yet. The underside of *my* flatbed is indeed built on framing members that I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

Yeah, we did notice the Focus sitting on the road as we had to squeeze by. It didn't look stuck to us, and the reclined seat made us think maybe someone had slept in it? Kudos on following up on it, we thought maybe the owner was off in the woods taking care of business or something? Wife...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

Small world - the 1st FWC we see in the wild on our shakedown trip happens to be a WTW member! Easy. A bit bumpy in places, but I think you could do it in pretty much any vehicle.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

The deciding factor for us to get a flatbed vs a slide-in model was the floorplan. More specifically, it was a vision of being able to comfortably sleep our family of four in the camper. This vision was to turn the rear dinette/bed into a bunk bed configuration. My original idea was to drill...

4 bolts with backing plates on both sides. One in the propane compartment, one in the battery compartment, one in the storage under the dinette seating, and the last one under the cabinet below the water pump. It definitely took some wrangling for them to find the right spots for the bolts and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hawk Flatbed Build Thread

Install day today! Between the install and selling the original bed of the truck, this was an all-day job. (Disclaimer: I'm lucky enough to live within easy driving distance of FWC in Woodland, CA) Warning - lots of pictures ahead. Who needs jacks when you've got a fork truck? I couldn't help...

That's right, I've got 14" removable sides that go on it. Time will tell how frequently I actually use the truck in this way. Here's a shot with the sides on (and my helper getting them off) No issues with fitment, the dimensions were spot on. That said, the ordering process was less than...

Been waiting all summer to start this thread! After a process that was significantly more hassle than expected, the flatbed is finally on the truck, and the camper gets installed tomorrow.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Coyote Hills

I was up there earlier this year. Drove right across what remains of the airstrip, which isn't much. Didn't even realize it until later - It's not very easy to distinguish from the ground, although the satellite makes it seem obvious.

Day 5: Benton Hot Springs We drove north through the volcanic table-lands, stopping for a detour at Casa Diablo mine. We drove a ways up, and then I threw in the towel, not wanting to push my overheating cruiser too far. The other vehicle explored up a bit higher, apparently the road gets...

Ours are 80-series ('96 and '97) with the inline-6 as well. The way we have them armored up, I don't think we can say they are lightly loaded, and as a consequence, no more 'decent power' either! They get us where we want to go though, and home to boot! What year was yours, lighthawk?

Day 4: Back down the hill We were all feeling quite chilled in the morning, and the some of us were feeling the altitude quite a bit as well (surely nothing to do with the whiskey which had kept us warm the previous night). We decided to head back down out of Coyote Flat and check out some of...

Day 3: Up into Coyote Flat This was a big day. We got our cold butts off the top of Bald Mtn first thing in the morning, driving towards Big Spring campground, and then south-east towards Casa Diablo mine. As seems to be the norm in this area, we were afforded expansive vistas along the way...
