RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exploring Mono/Inyo May 14-20th

Day 2: Bald Mountain Lookout We left carson river hot springs without our morning soak :( , and headed out back the way we came in. Only saw one vehicle coming in as we were heading out. The road out has some pretty narrow sections, luckily we were at a place with a turnout. Once back on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exploring Mono/Inyo May 14-20th

There are two routes that I know of. You can get there on the Barney Riley trail, and I believe this one has no access contention whatsoever, however it has an extremely high pucker factor. We did this once. The way I normally get there, and it seems the way everyone I've met there gets there...

Alright, let's try this image hosting bit out. Here's a shot of the business end of the cruiser making some coffee

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exploring Mono/Inyo May 14-20th

A group of six of us explored some of the hot springs, high valleys, ghost towns, abandoned mines, and all around amazing views in Mono and Inyo counties between May 14th and 20th. We traveled in two 80-series Land Cruisers and tent camped. Although I am somewhat new to WTW, this trip is the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tioga Pass - May 2016

Awesome!! I spent all last week near that area (TR coming soon) and wished I'd brought my skis with me a few times. Looks great.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

Maybe. I think the two issues that make me nervous about the idea are that when the jacks are being used to raise/lower the camper, (1) the force is straight up/down and (2) the load is very static. A spare hung off the back would exert some lateral forces and the forces might really amplify...

Yeah, I know... wishful thinking. (re: spare tire)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jack brackets repurposed

How strong are these brackets? I had an idea of fabbing a crossmember to span between the two rear brackets on a side-entry hawk flatbed and putting the spare tire back there. A bit worried about the weight of that spare though. Kind of like this, but with a spare instead of jerry cans and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aluminum flatbed fender clearance

I imagine the fenders might improve the vehicle's drag coefficient....from "horrendous" to "horrendous - 0.0000001" :D

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aluminum flatbed fender clearance

Tempting. keep it simple. The fenders on the alum-line design look pretty integral though, not sure if they're structurally important to the box mounting or not, I'll have to ask...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aluminum flatbed fender clearance

I think I'll take you up on that. You used alum-line too, right? I've got to get the truck 1st though!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Flatbeds: Who has them? How many have been built?

Well, you can add +1 to the flatbed hawk count. I just ordered ours on Saturday!!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Aluminum flatbed fender clearance

Ok, I'm getting pretty close to pulling the trigger on my build. Been dealing with Alum-Line for the flatbed, and one thing stood out. Look at this picture, and the clearance between the rear tire and the fender arch in the flatbed. Mark at Alum-Line tells me that they typically do a 42-inch...

Tell me about it! Everything's a compromise - it's tough figuring out the perfect fit.

Wow, great coverage up there. That snow looks pretty heavy!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ram trucks, payload, suspension, and off-road ability

I'm in pretty serious analysis paralysis mode here! The 2500 hemi has the payload I'd need. When I talked to folks at FWC and Carli, they did not skip a beat recommending the 3500. While I agree that weight is a killer, I think I've already jumped off the deep end in that regard. Went...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West cast iron: avoiding rust

If you wash it (just water!), I find that really drying it out is key, and the most effective way is to run it on high heat for a minute or so. It also takes a coat of oil nicely afterwards when it's warm, if needed.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West An idea for sleeping 4 in a flatbed hawk - feedback wanted!

elmo_4_vt - Yep - bolt through to a backing plate is exactly what the guys at FWC recommended to me when I brought this idea up. That's a nice looking flatbed! You'll have a ton of storage up there. You putting the spare in those boxes, or under the bed? Durango1 - I haven't decided whether to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West An idea for sleeping 4 in a flatbed hawk - feedback wanted!

Durango1 - I definitely did consider the grandby, but I really want the crew cab, and I can't handle the LWB for the kind of off-road travel I like to do. I realize everything is a tradeoff, and that it will be a tight fit in there with the 4 of us. I think most eating and hanging out will be...

Thanks, hadn't seen their blog before. That grandby sure is spacious but I can't stomach the long wheel base.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West An idea for sleeping 4 in a flatbed hawk - feedback wanted!

Hi all, I'm trying to put together a plan for an overland camping rig that will fit my family. There are lots of great builds on this forum that are giving me inspiration, and my current plan is a Ram 3500 with a flatbed FWC Hawk. The only issue is that I really want this thing to sleep 4. My...
