Glad to see the canyon is recovering, hope we get some decent water years so that recovery will continue and quicken.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

Elle, My truck bed tie down points are forward of the camper tie downs at the front, rearward of the camper tie downs at the rear and outboard of all camper tie downs to control lateral shifting. So far I can't see that my camper has moved at all in about 40000 miles of driving on and off...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona Strip - Toroweap

The tortoise was in an area a little SW of Beatty NV that is almost in DVNP but not quite. Was exploring that area one fall and on a hike we saw lots of burrows that we were sure were from tortoises. Went back one April and saw 2 tortoises then saw one again on this trip. Like you we spend a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona Strip - Toroweap

Hardcastle, I'm sure you'll see lots of flowers. FYI the road to Toroweap from Colorado City is in great shape, recently graded. Road to Whitmore is graded down to the Bar10. Have fun!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona Strip - Toroweap

At Toroweap there is a long steep trail that goes down to Lava Rapids, didn't make the hike. Ditto at Whitmore but the trail is shorter and easier. Fortunately temps were moderate so a cold beer and shade sufficed.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Arizona Strip - Toroweap

The wife, mutt and I spent 4/18-4/26 traveling to and from Toroweap in the AZ Strip. Spent 2 days driving to St George where we topped up on water and fuel and visited the BLM office for info and camping permits for Toroweap. We picked up the BLM Arizona Strip Visitor Map which is highly...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tires for Tacoma

Shear, I think that's (265/70R16) what my truck came with and I couldn't find them in Load Range E either. I switched to 235/85R16 They are slightly narrower and taller but fit fine on my truck. I actually like a narrower tire for winter driving, they cut through snow to the pavement rather...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tires for Tacoma

I'm on my second set of Yokohama Geolander ATS (10 ply rated, load range E) and love them, We've done thousands of off pavement miles with them and never had a problem. Got them at Discount Tire. When looking at tire sizes remember that you can change tire widths and aspect ratio and get the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

Elle, Your setup looks bomber and is stronger than mine. Sorry if I wasn't clear but the bolts that bent on me were the hold down bolts at the camper that 4wheel provided, not the hardware that I installed on the truck. I was also a bit mystified as to the proper length for the turnbuckle...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another tie-down thread...

I had the same issue with my FWC, replaced the bolts with grade 8's and they seem to be holding up. I was worried though about the point load on the plywood. I like that your solution spreads out the load and ties the two pieces of ply together. If I ever have any more issues with mine I'll...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West It's the little things!

We've always just dug a cathole to do our business when truck camping but now squatting is getting more uncomfortable due to age and health issues. We have a river toilet called the scatpacker which has worked well for us on float trips. I'm thinking I'll make a mount for a 5 gallon bucket to...

Really no regrets, got the base empty eagle shell and have added what I want. I get to have it my way at the lowest possible price.

    8. I think I used 5/16 for everything, if you think that's too weak go 3/8, the SS hold down bolts go only through the SS, bed and bottom plate so are about 1" long. 9. All bolts are coarse thread. I'm an engineer but not mechanical (chemical), I went with my gut and experience. I built a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

Elle, Thanks for asking the questions, I haven't really looked close at my camper attachment recently except to check turnbuckle tightness. I just crawled under the truck and poked into the turnbuckle camper access doors and am happy to say that everything is still straight, tight and good to...

wpage66 I don't know when they switched to a one piece roof, our 2010 Eagle has the screws like yours. So far we've had no leaks (knock on wood). The aluminum skin is attached directly to the aluminum framing. In terms of roof loading you need to assure that the attachment for racks, solar...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Refrigerator and 12v battery charging while driving (New Zealand report too)

Stalking, We're running a smaller cooler (cf-18) which uses about half the power of yours and have a 100 amp hour battery. Ours should run 3-4 days even with no solar input. I would expect that yours should run for a day or two if your battery is getting fully charged. I wonder if your...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Refrigerator and 12v battery charging while driving (New Zealand report too)

I'm guessing the fridge in your NZ camper was a compressor fridge since you could hear it cycling at night. The fridge in the camper we rented in AUS some years back was and it would run for a couple of days without driving. The comp fridges are much more efficient than 3 ways on electricity...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Matress options for 1990 Hawk

Another option currently being discussed in another thread is to leave the bed extended while driving allowing the thicker matress to stay in place. It sounds like quite a few 4wheel campers (including myself) do it this way. Added benefits are that you can leave the bed made and use a one...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bed extended?

We only used the stock pads for one trip (too hard) and then replaced them with a one piece foam pad. We leave the bed extended and made while traveling and have had no problems. After we pop up we flip the matress forward and slide in the bed extension to give us more room until bedtime...

SKI, That is really cool, I've been to the Unionville area doing inspections for the state but have not gone there to explore. You've definitely piqued my interest. I love the fact that you went looking for the airmail beacons and found one still standing. Too cool!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Condensation - Roof Vents - windows

SKI We totally agree, for getting to the places we want to go and being way more comfortable than tent camping we don't even consider the condensation we get to be an issue at all.
