RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

Awesome place. Thanks for sharing your trip. Were the paddle wheels for gold mining? I am glad you made it safely through the rapids. Actually they were for irrigation. It's hard to see on the reduced size pics but there are buckets on the sides of the wheel that would pickup water and dump...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

BillM, looks like you had a great trip. Whitewater, remote river, hot springs, float trip, snow, how could you go wrong? Thanks for the trip report! Ski3 It was great and we got lucky on the weather, it could have been a lot wetter and colder (like memorial day weekend was). I know you enjoy...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

Day 5 we hit the slackwater of Owyhee Reservoir and had to oar 12 miles to the takeout at Leslie Gulch. 8 miles in there is an awesome hotspring that we soaked in, made the reservoir pull worth it. We passed more great rock towers on our way to the takeout.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

Day 4 we floated past some cool towers and the first takeout at Birch Creek (mile 45). Everybody else on the river took out at Birch but we pushed on toward Leslie Gulch (mile 67). The First Waterwheel was at Birch and we camped next to another wheel downriver.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

Day 2 was the only fully sunny day we had. Had a great float, soaked in a riverside hotspring and then camped and hiked up to the canyon rim.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee Float May 2011

Rafted the Owyhee in OR from Rome to Leslie gulch from 5/23-5/27. River was way higher than average 4500 CFS versus 1000 CFS median flow. First day was overcast rainy and cool. Unfortunately a guy on a commercial trip about 2 hrs ahead of us died in the second significant rapid, made for a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee/Succor Creek

Succor creek was neat, but aren't you going to be pretty far south of that? Or maybe you were planning a float and then some exploration. Anyway, I was with DD on that trip last year. Succor is pretty cool, but Leslie Gulch was flat out amazing. Some good looking trails up the slot canyons...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West towing

BillM- Thanks for your towing gear suggestions. Have you ever snapped an old climbing rope when you used it to extend a tow strap to reach an anchor? I have not paddled the Owyhee River. I have traveled via 4 WD and foot extensively in the area and it is fabulous. There are multiple river forks...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West towing

Good stuff, thanks! Long ago a good northwoods man told me skills were more important than things. Solid advice and yet a few things can make a big difference. I think my next purchase is a serious tow strap. 3" x 30' sounds right? Any other advice on that item? Factory anchor points on the 2008...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Owyhee/Succor Creek

The wife, dog and I are going to float the Owyhee from Rome to Leslie Gulch the last full week of May. We've never been to the Succor Creek area and are looking for suggestions of where to explore/camp. We like remote camping, hot springs, slot canyons, good hikes, etc. Any suggestions?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Roof Lifting Mechanism

How easy was it to lower the roof with that weight? Used the lifter to lower the roof also and it works great for that. In the past I've had to put our break down raft frame in the camper which is a pain, now it will go on the roof.

Just got my speaker stand and tried it out with 44 lbs on top, works like a charm.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Roof Lifting Mechanism

Keep it simple. The out side roof lifters work great and you don't have to find a place to store them. IMO that is the best way to go. Frank I don't carry roof items often so I think that the price and not having to pull down the unloaded roof make the speaker stand lifter the way to go for...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Roof Lifting Mechanism

Dorocks, was your measurement done with the rear lifted? If not, I bet if you lift the rear first the front push board has more than 48 inches clearance. I'm going to order one of these today so I can lift the top with my rafting gear or canoe on top. I like the speaker stand idea and know...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West the inland passage of Alaska

really? What if we have a pop up 4 wheel camper? Will the soft sides be a problem? Our food will be in there with us. It's an individual choice but I figure it's best to be safe rather than sorry. We were there in 98 and there were several cases of bear attacks that year and the year...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Big-Snow year in Sierras?

Yep, we're getting pounded. The sad thing is we've done less backcountry skiing than usual because the avalanche risk has been so high. Hoping for a good spring, warm sunny days and below freezing nights, so we can ski into July.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West the inland passage of Alaska

I'd concur on taking the Cassiar and stopping at Hyder, also make the side trip to Telegraph Creek on the Stikine. When we did this in 98 there were free forestry maps available at the tourist info stops in the small towns along the way. They showed side roads and camps that we would have...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help Me Plan My First Trip Please! SW

From reno take 395 south, there are primitive hotsprings around Mammoth and a campground with hot tubs fed from a spring in Benton CA. Eureka dunes is cool and if you are adventurous take Dedeckera canyon (see pics from last year in the trip forum) into saline valley (exquisite hot springs)...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Saline Valley

Spent a long weekend in Saline. Went in via S. Pass, worst washboard I've ever seen. Tried every speed from 1 to 50 mph and it was rattling out my fillings and screws in the camper. Had great weather and great soaks but there were/are more feds (10) there than I've ever seen in any backcountry...
