    Thunderstorm in progress

We realized standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon during a thunderstorm might not be a good idea when everyones hair started to stand up -- he rain for cover like a bunch of little girls!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West No roof

I've driven a couple time with my FWC top up. Only went a few miles and tried to keep it under 30mph - not a problem. I have a check list laminated on a piece of cardboard that I keep in the cab to remind me to latch the top and lock the back door.... I've driven down I-5 with my back door...

    Typical campsite at Ft. Stevens.

Actually this is a very peaceful picture that doesn't capture the true chaos that is Ft. Stevens. I was almost run over by a kid on a bike just after taking this photo....
  5. Battery Russel at Ft. Stevens

    Battery Russel at Ft. Stevens

Ft. Stevens was a HUGE military base from the Civil War until after WWII. This is a cannon battery from WWII. The huge guns were on turrets that could be lowered and made invisible from the ocean.

A real tough spot for lunch...

The baby was sleeping - so we had to park and have lunch in the camper... There are a few places at Ft. Stevens that allow you to drive right out on the sand. A rarity in Oregon.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West A new door for an old Granby

It's 106 on my thermometer now so I may have to wait, but it is a dry heat  Like an OVEN! I need a new door as well, the current one is bent in the middle so you really have to slam the crap out of it to close it. This thread might inspire me to order one up.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Truck Bed Tearing in Baja

When/if you double plate the eye bolts to the body - use 2 different size plates so they can not tear out as a pair. If you use matching size plates they can work together like a can opener and tear a perfect size hole through sheetmetal...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Estacada, OR campgrounds

A fellow I met while out wandering told me about a spot out that way called Bagby Hot Springs. Ever been there? Yes - but I haven't been up there in about 3 years. And I have never camped there - the campground is about a mile hike from the parking lot - or you can drive a few miles and camp...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

UglyScout, thanks for the photos and trip reports. It is so good to see families getting out into the outdoors! John Day, Prineville, Crooked River, great places we need to get back too! I like camping and my son loves anything outside - so it is pretty easy to take him camping. We got very...

Kam Wah Chung Museum One of the things I found the most amazing at the Kam Wah Chung Museum was the story of the metal front door to protect the doctor and other Chinese from being shot in the 1880-1890's (there are bullet holes in the wood door)-- and then the Chamber of Commerce certificate...

Not in the Fossil Beds - but if you make it to Joihn Day this is worth the stop. The modern history of Eastern Oregon would not be complete without this important story of the Chinese laborers...

Thanks for sharing scout, that's on a trip list after this fall's Steens/SE Oregon trip. Steens is next on our list as well.... I've lived in Bend for 32 years and I've still never really explored the Fossils Bend NM (though I've driven through/around all the paved roads in the area and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

4 Days, 3 nights, 700 miles of good times. I hadn't been to John Day in at least 20 years and my wife has never really been to Eastern Oregon since she moved to Oregon 8 years ago. So this trip was fun and new for everyone! Needless to say the trip was a huge success. Our 18 month old was a...

I've camped at or near every campground on the Clackamas River and they are totally hit or miss. I camped at Lazy Bend in the fall. It is right on the highway - but right on the river. Almost all the 'official' campgrounds are squeezed in between the river and the road. On a weekday once the...
