RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

In making a transition to an XP there are a few things that take getting used to. One is that the camper is inaccessible to you as well as intruders when closed. Another is the very different way the stove/hot water/ heater unit is powered and performs. I'm not saying for better or worse, but...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

My Syncro Westfalia had propane for the stove of course. I became used to that instant heat and total control of cooking on gas. I liked it so much that I converted my home stove to propane! The XP uses a diesel powered ceramic cooktop. I never got used to how slow it responded. I like to cook...

Once again I have strayed beyond the bounds of the forum rules, although I thought that I was being careful. I wish that I had had access to an open forum discussion before I bought my camper. Sent from my iPad using Wander The West

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking at new Alaskans

Pictures tomorrow. My layout is custom in that I only wanted one bench (to seat two people) with a table in front of it. Therefore I can only sleep however many people can fit in the cabover bed with me! Across from the bench seat, where you would usually find another bench, is a storage cabinet...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking at new Alaskans

Alaskan hard wired and hard mounted a flat 120 panel on the roof. That is enough to keep my two house batteries charged even when stationary for a week or more. The two Ram batteries have an isolator switch but I usually leave everything connected. I also have a portable Zamp 120 panel that...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Alaskan Camper Gallery

A second spare tire on a swing out arm on one side. A tall cabinet on the other side which is great for fuel containers, firewood, and anything else that I don't want inside the cab or camper. This is from XP as is the flatbed. When I ditched the XP I kept the flatbed and had Bryan fit the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking at new Alaskans

I do a lot of desert camping. The awnings help keep the camper and the dog cool. The a.c. on top is so that I can enjoy short trips around my home state of Florida to go fishing. (It is the first time I've had a camper with an a.c.) The whole rig costs about as much as my house, which I sold to...

Enelson, Coldest so far was minus 6 degrees F. The furnace is the usual that Bryan installs, but I carry two propane tanks. Works fine even with the top up, but I leave it on the coldest setting, about 55. One night is was 8 degrees and I had run out of propane so I left the top down and bundled...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Alaska, Alaskan CO and grey water

For new campers, Bryan can build in a grey water tank under the sink. Mine has a valve so I can divert to the outside drain, bypassing the tank, when I'm in a suitable place. The tank is only five gallons and disconnects so you lift it out of the camper through an outside hatch to empty it. Not...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking at new Alaskans

I picked up my new Alaskan this fall and am thoroughly pleased after living in it for four months. Mine is on a one ton dodge 4x4 with a custom flatbed. Bryan built the usual camper out to the edge of the bed. The floor plan is unchanged except for my having more storage. Everything works...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

The moderator objected to the emoting in the post. Ok. I transitioned from a 24 year old Syncro Westfalia that I had owned since new. I was looking for something more reliable. I wanted to be able to travel without the nagging worries that come with an old VW. I was willing to accept the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

I was asked to explain why I was so unhappy with my XP that I sold it at a considerable loss after only six months. However, my reply went into too much detail and violated the rules of the forums. Therefore it was deleted by a moderator. I understand, but it is a shame. If I had read a review...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

I know that there are few negative reviews of XP available. I did lots of research before buying mine. It cost me about $80,000 so you can bet that I looked into it! After I sold it I posted on XP's site about my disappointment. I didn't want to appear to be slamming the company in public, so I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West aluminum vs fiberglass

From my experience, fiberglass is more fragile and very expensive to repair. I had an XP fiberglass camper that developed stress cracks even from highway bumps. Aluminum may look old fashioned but it is tough stuff. I bought an Alaskan. Sent from my iPad using Wander The West

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Transition to XP

To directly address the topic, I was transitioning from a Syncro Westfalia to the XP. What a disaster! Fortunately I didn't sell the VW right away because I needed to live in it several times while the XP was repaired.
