RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Something New Is Afoot

Wow, quite a difference between the old and new spring packs! I know there a several good companies out there making custom springs, any reason you picked Dobinson over the others? Are they the Australian company, and was that a custom or off the shelf kit? While I’m pretty sure you keep the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bad Battery Overheating/Causing smell

Thanks guys. Spent a large portion of my electrical career as a troubleshooter, so kind of in tune to that kind of thing. Would be great if the OP would post more pictures of the problem area and ultimate solution. That’s the best way for us all to learn about how to avoid these problems (I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bad Battery Overheating/Causing smell

In the upper right corner of the battery compartment the red wire appears blackened. Not sure what’s going on there from the picture, but a loose connection will cause the insulation to overheat and that could be the smell. May not be the battery at all.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Engel Installed

FYI, the voltage readings shouldn’t be different from what you’re seeing now whether chest is empty or full. When full of fully cooled food it should cycle less though. I’ve had an Engle in my Eagle Shell for 20 years now. Even though it was way too expensive, it’s some of the best money I’ve...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Best solution to reduce body roll

As someone who has been tinkering with and modifying the same truck/4wheel camper combination for over 20 years I figure maybe I should share my experience trying to solve the same problems. Those E rated tires are a great first step, just be aware that tire pressure makes a big difference, so...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West F350 scissor jack

This is like asking “what is the best tire?” Both questions depend on vehicle type, terrain and intended uses, among other variables. I personally carry both in both of my 4x4 vehicles and would not consider leaving home without either (and both have contributed to my getting home at all...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

Got the housing back from the fab shop today. Very happy with the results. Guy does suspension and differential work for Baja race teams. I figure someone jumping a dune at 100 MPH is going to stress the truck the same way I would driving up Goler Wash in low range with a way overloaded camper...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

An update: Finally found a good stock replacement housing. A HUGE thanks to Dylan at Yotamasters in Southern California. They have become my go to for both OEM and aftermarket Toyota parts and advice, and I swear the parts are on my doorstep before I even hang up the phone. Upon further...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

Well, lots of options for long term solutions, so am going to do more research and then take my time building it up right. In the meantime I’m going to listen to the advice most of you gave and find a good used stock housing to put all my very good condition parts back into (just replaced all...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

Thanks for the replies. First thing to state is any fix is going to be long term. Replacing this truck is NOT an option. Unfortunately, nothing out there to match its size, simplicity and reliability. Plus 30 years of modifications both large and small means this truck fits me like a good pair...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

Well, the damage is worse than I expected. Drivers side is cracked at the weld, but passenger side is not only cracked all the way through (and leaking) but the tube is crushed. Housing is now junk. Could just replace with another, but of course if it happened once… If I’m going through the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West E rated tires and air pressure?

Don’t want to loose track of the original question, but since the subject of the new software came up, what happened to the signatures that used to be on the bottom of posts? Was very handy during discussions like this when the poster showed what kind of rig they had, helped put answers in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Close Call

Well, it appears ski3pin is not the only one to recently dodge a bullet. Yesterday I was installing my offroad tires in preparation for a trip to Utah next week. The first sign of trouble was some oil spots on my garage floor. Even though it has over 350K hard miles on it, in typical Toyota...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Truck camper and tire rotation

Have had my 93 Toyota since new. Always only a “Trip Truck” never a daily driver. Have always had two sets of tires and rims, Michelin LTX for road trips and BFG Mud Terrains for off road adventures (both LT rated). Since I regularly swap tires, I just always mark position when I take them off...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West South to Spring: Death Valley, Mojave, Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, Organ Pipe

We were inspired to head out to Death Valley and the Mojave Preserve for a couple weeks very loosely based on your trip report. Have always been curious about the Mojave Preserve and this was the push we needed to actually head out there. Definitely need to return, as we barely scratched the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Need new Toyota shocks…Recommendations?

Thanks for the input, but the curse of the unlifted pre Tacoma Toyota strikes again. Ironic for a truck that used to be common as dirt. Oh well, I’m still keeping it!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 235/85R-16 BFG HD Terrains…Opinions so far

After several thousand miles, most of which were off road, I’m happy to report the major changes I made to the toyota’s wheels and tires turned out even better than I expected. Like most of you with a Four Wheel Camper on a Toyota, I was overloaded. This meant I needed to ditch the stock 15”...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Need new Toyota shocks…Recommendations?

Ya, I liked the specs on the 5100’s but again, like so many other premium shocks they don’t have an application for an unlifted version of my truck. Looks like that’s the direction I may be heading. Have read a lot of your very entertaining trip reports, and it appears we travel a lot of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Need new Toyota shocks…Recommendations?

Thanks for the input Dennis. Unfortunately Fox also doesn’t list an application for my truck. Through all my research it looked like Old Man Emu twin tubes would be my best bet. Lots of sites showed applications for an unlifted truck, but when I contacted ARB directly the very helpful tech guy...

I had been considering replacing my approximately 20 year old KYB shocks, but of course the old saying “If it aint broke…” kept me from actually doing anything. Well, I returned last week from two weeks in Death Valley and the Mojave Desert to find that the weld holding the lower mount to the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Found a short-wheel base truck, own a 8' FWC Grandby. Conversions?

Maybe apples to oranges, maybe not. When I found my old 65 Chevy SWB 4x4 and awoke it from it’s decades long slumber it had an 8ft welders flatbed on it. But hey, it was a factory 4x4 so I had to have it! When we drug it out of the barn and into the daylight though, it was the goofiest looking...

Just a heads up for anyone considering purchasing one of the real deal Swiss spouts. I recently needed to buy another, but about the only place to buy one is Swiss Army Vehicles in Arkansas. Thanks for the info Rubberlegs, The T&RA charts were especially useful, that was what I really was hoping for. Page 21 had LT235/85R16 truck tires. Fully loaded I’m at #3740 on the rear axel, which should be #1860 per tire. That’s #40 of air on the chart. Of course that’s without the all...

Finally found some nice refurbished Toyota 16x7 steel rims (like early Tacoma and Tundra spares). Had been waiting for BFG to start making the Mud Terrains in 235-85R16 again, but apparently now are not going to, so I decided to take a chance with the new HD Terrains. Before putting them on the...
