    Gas mileage

2004 DURAMAX, 8ft cabover Alaskan 12 +- 1 at 75 on interstate 14+- 1 at 60-65 on two lane Best thing for me about my Alaskan is crosswind, which I deal with constantly.

new tires - snow rating - new truck - not worry? chains?

It is not hard to add a few links to make the old chains fit the new truck. I have run chains hard for winter off road and have modified, repaired and broken multiple sets. Going from 33's to 35's doesn't take much if they are close to the same width.

ask your lumber yard about door skins, light and flexible for the curves, used them in my first rebuild

    Big complicated hydraulics question

The hydraulics are fairly simple, if you can straighten the tube and it works, you are done. On the drivers side front corner mine had a hole that allowed a pin to tie the top and bottom together when traveling. I fabricated another for the passenger side as well. A necessity dealing with cross...

Input/help needed to increase charging to my camper battery

Not a charging solution, but install a wave catalytic heater to supplement the furnace. Furnace runs a fraction of the time, mostly to warm up when set up, wave has no battery drain. Works well for Montana nights so should help

Problems with Alaskan camper running lights

I had similar problems, solved by tightening screws on each light to complete ground. Correct the ground and the problem goes away.

    Cabover Tips

My son lives in Alaska, had my non cab over for a while. He swore if you ran the fantastic fan blowing into the camper it created enough pressure differential it kept them from coming in the cracks. I haven't had to try it, but he used it enough to know.

Seeking advice on my first Alaskan

Thanks for the link, lots of good information. Still debating between a chest type and replacing the upright. Haven't decided.

    New Here...

Your vintage truck is probably good to go. The newer trucks are the problem with bed rail height. My 2004 chevy fits but rides better on a piece of plywood. Lots of mounting options happy to discuss if interested. My first came home with a couple of ratchet straps over the top. Still do that...

    Cabover Tips

Haven't timed it with a stopwatch, but probably three minutes from starting the hydraulic pump to being weather tight. I have done it in all the conditions you describe plus thunder storms. Never been a problem.

Seeking advice on my first Alaskan

What you describe and your use sounds very similar to my experiences. I am currently running a 8 foot cab over on a Chevy 2500 extended cab short box, 6 feet. Diesel, 4x4, only addition is airbags and 285x75x16 Toyo MT's (third set) and a winch, This vehicle gets a lot of serious off road use...

    Alaskan 8.5' on a 6.5' bed, F150 ?

I have an eight foot cab over on a six and a half foot Chevy 2500 with suspension upgrades. I like the shorter wheelbase turning radius and ground clearance, but a half ton will be overloaded. I ran my non cab over on my son in laws half ton ford with air bags and it was maxed, worked but...

Selling A Camper With A Lien On It

Buyer pays off the lien and gives you your equity in the camper. If a local bank make it a three way visit. Bank gets lien paid, gives buyer lien release, buyer gives you balance of sales price, you give buyer the title to go with the lien release.

New guy who just bought a '77 CO Alaskan

Good luck. I have done three rebuilds, it can be fun. My second rebuild was a 77 model. Rotten wood under the side windows is common, the windows sweat or leak and creates the issue with enough years. Happy to pass along the mistakes I have made and what was learned from them.

Hot water and outside side shower.

I am not familiar with the plumbing set up in a Grandby, but you might take a look at my post on the Alaskan forum on winterizing in five minutes, I use it to winterize once or twice a year, I use it as a shower all spring, summer and fall. Not as nice as what you are describing but simple and...

    Olympus Wave 3 Catalytic heater

I have a wave 3 in my Alaskan, works fine at 8700 feet, highest I have tried it. I use it to supplement the furnace in truly cold trips. Keeps the furnace from cycling as much, but not enough by itself when really cold ( 0 or so).

    winterize in five minutes

Time to winterize in Montana, thought I would share my method. I installed a valve in the supply line from the water tank to the pump. The T connection is a 36 inch piece of tubing. Turning the valve selects water from the tank or water from the T connection. Turn the valve to the T...

1972 CO Lower door spreading at top

The first one I rebuilt the under door plate was cracked. Welded it and it has been fine. My experience with the spread at the top of the bottom door is not related to the door plate. My easiest solution has been to put a piece of foam board insulation between the bed sidewalks and the camper...

Issues to look for in an Alaskan?

Look for water damage around vents, windows and where the roof and back wall come together. Look at the sliding guides at each corner to see if they are bent and if they track straight. Leaks in the hydraulic system?do the four corners go up and down smoothly and evenly? Most are not perfect but...
