RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Manual vs automatic transmission?

One big thing that I like about a manual trans is when climbing mountains, YOU get to pick the gear and the trans doesn't hunt for the right gear.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Manual vs automatic transmission?

My 4runner is a manual. I tow a 2000# trailer. Other than going slow thru the Colorado mountains, due to lack of power at high altitudes, The manual does great. Around Denver I do rev the engine a little more but not much. The FWC doesn't weigh that much. Are you thinking a small truck or a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Gutted Fleet - Rebuilding

Wow, that's huge project. Any idea how many hours invested? I have old Fleet that I've been patching up, and I can't seam to find the leaks. I think it's along the roof/wall seams. The canvas is stained from the mildew, so I'm considering tearing it all down to the frame and starting over. The...

Where does the price of windstoper fleece come out? I think there could be a major benefit to it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fleece as soft-side insulation?

A nice thing about fleece is that it'll dry fast. Have you thought about a windstop fleece? Or neoprene? The nice thing about fleece and neoprene is that it can be cut and doesn't unravel.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shortening the body, Lengthen the overhead.

JohnF, as ntsqd said the web just holds to flanges in place for the most part. Off hand from photo memory FWC uses a big C-channel extrusion for the cabover if I'm recalling right. Shooting from the hip I'd suspect the web thickness is probably quite adequate in that shape, but again one...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bobcat Shell on a Toyota Tacoma

One major concern is where you live and where you want to travel. If you live or travel thru the high altitude mountains, the 4cyl will struggle more. If you aren't in a hurry the 4cyl may be fine but the 6cyl would do better. A 1/2 ton would do better and 3/4 or 1 ton will haul the best, all...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Has anyone dropped and extended the floor pack on an 80's FWC?

If you just need to fill the gap between the bed and the base of the camper I would do a wood frame and fill it with rigid foam insulation. This will relieve the pressure off the truck bed rails and add some floor insulation.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shortening the body, Lengthen the overhead.

The couple of FWCs that I'm trying to look at are both older long bed models. I'm going to have to gut and rebuild the floor pack (narrow from 64" down to 58"). Since I'll be down to the frame anyway I'm thinking about shortening the body/floor pack and lengthening the overhead. Basically I'm...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New (to me) Truck ideas and opinions

I have a friend with a F550 with the 6.0 or 6.2 Diesel, I can't remember, but it is a horrible engine. He has had 2 or 3 head gaskets blow and 2 turbos explode. This is all due to the EGR valve failing. (I'll get more info on year and engine) I have heard that Ford's new engine is very nice.

I have been running an Engel MT45 for a few years now. It awesome! I have a spot in my 4runner that I sleep right next to and it hums but is very quiet. It will run off 12vdc or 120vac. You can have both plugged into the fridge and it will automatically choose ac when available. It does have a...
