Should have checked wires from below....

Just get the speaker lift. Your 60 y.o. back will thank you. +4 on 'fix it right'.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Thank you for the quick response. Apparently the problem is the picture format [.winp]. Safari says it can't open it. Bandwidth isn't the issue; the file is only about 400KB and I have opened larger pictures on this site. Looks like a workaround is to hit the Watch button on any threads I...

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Two issues: In Ski3pin's thread 'Front Suspension Damage' his pictures only have a small blue square with ? in middle. Nothing I have tried will display pictures. I have had other threads with this problem. Is there a way to display all posts from today and maybe yesterday too. My normal...

    Cell Phone Signal Booster?

The last 2G/3G network shut down at the end of 2022 in the US and Canada. Don't know about the rest of the world.

Anybody running minimal or no power in their camper?

Before I got my Grandby I took 6 week long trips for 3 years out of a Subaru Forester with backpacking gear and a Coleman ice chest. It worked just fine. Even now I use my backpacking stove inside the camper. Getting a refrigerator in the Grandby was a big advance. I had three problems with...

You know you're a geezer when.......................

You don't become cooler with age, but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way of being cool. This is called the Geezer's Paradox.

You know you're a geezer when.......................

Every time I go into a thrift store there is someone by the record rack scanning records with their phone; I'm assuming to determine value. I found some old records in the attic. Don't remember this band, but this album is awful and it totally messed up my record player.

    1977 FWC Fleet Complete Overhaul

I just used spar varnish, 3 coats and double on the edges. It shouldn't be getting wet inside. My build is modular but each module is made to not come apart. It has withstood 8 years of offroad pounding. I did a lot of alternate designs in SolidWorks before I started building and the setup...

    1977 FWC Fleet Complete Overhaul

I traveled down this same path 9 years ago with a 1977 Grandby. Totally stripped the interior; didn't remove the roof or siding. This was my first attempt at cabinetmaking. I went with 3/4" plywood for countertops and 1/2" plywood for vertical surfaces. 3/4" is solid for countertops, 1/2" is...

    Have I lost my mind?

Congratulations on your new adventure. I got a Grandby for the same reason: after 60 it's no longer fun getting up off the ground. It should extend your camping enjoyment for many years. My advice: since you are experienced backpackers, pack like a backpacking trip. Except you don't need a...

Replacing 3 way Fridge with 12v

I have a 12V/120V refrigerator in my Grandby. I don't stay in campgrounds with shore power. The only real use I found for 120V is to pre-cool the fridge at home and my solar (200W) works just as well keeping the battery at 100%

DIY roof lift 12V Linear Actuators

I have an original speaker lift. I added 4" PVC pipe to the bottom to correct extended height. I used to use a 4X4 block but that got annoying. I lift one end at a time (I think it is easier on the roof). If I'm lazy I use a cordless drill to actuate. Stowing is no problem; there is always...

three-way fridge unusable? should i get a two way?

Your first consideration should be food safety. If your current fridge doesn't reliably keep food at the proper temperature, you either should go without food that requires cold temps or replace with a fridge that will keep food cold. Getting sick on holiday is double no fun. I place the...

    Repainting plywood base, 2006 Hawk?

I used Rust-Oleum Marine Topside Enamel on all my bottom wood. Held up well; needs refresh after 8 years. Best to go to a paint dealer (or call manufacturer's application engineers) and ask.

    Gas struts

One advantage of using a speaker lift is I can stop the decent anytime I want. My camper is old and no longer has the 'fold in' helpers. The speaker lift allows me to stop the decent and correct the stowing of the sidewalls.

I need to hear a good new joke

RED SKELTON'S RECIPE FOR THE PERFECT MARRIAGE: (If you remember Red Skelton you get an 'old' endorsement on your geezer card). Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food, and companionship. She goes on Tuesday, I go on Friday. We also sleep in separate beds...

    Gas mileage

That correlates with my experience; Ram 2500 4X4, Grandby: 12.5 mpg on level road with no wind (60 mph). I get about 14.0 with an empty truck. Traveling across the Dakota's I get 10 - 18 mpg depending on wind.

    Toilets for FWC Shell

Another vote for bucket toilet. I did 3 major things to make this work well for me: Separate pee from poo. The combination is what make the gaggy smell. Pee jug gets dumped discretely. Use a Gamma Seal lid to hold whatever smell there is inside the bucket. Modify a toilet seat for 'at home'...

    Rear Wall Mounted E-bikes?

If you are at all handy cutting and drilling metal I'd just get a length of U channel (steel or stainless), width to fit tire inside. Since most of the weight is on this platform you will need to attach and support it better than the one shown. Positioned right the front fork clamp will not be...

    It's Spring...somewhere

Thanks, ski3pin. If we ever get snow this year (haven't used the blower yet) I will try one you recommended. I haven't had to clear snow yet this year. Lakes are very low.

    It's Spring...somewhere

Mr. ski3pin: What do you put on your snow equipment (shovels, snowblowers, blades) to keep your 'very heavy wet sierra cement' from sticking? We get something similar here in Minnesota in the late season storms that is very heavy, sticky crud that I have to shake the shovel to get off...
