RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Baby-Ready Hawk Renovation

We've got an 8 month old baby and a 20 year old Hawk. I've done lots to the Hawk, as documented elsewhere here. Most recently I changed the old side couch/storage box/bed into a dinette/baby crib/bed/storage boxes. We've used it enough now to report that it works pretty well. I can't think of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Broken frame welds, front of 2000 Grandby

I had the same breaks in my 1999 Hawk. I used angle brackets to repair a couple years ago. I haven't opened it up to inspect since... I guess that isn't too helpful. Now I'm curious about the Harbor Freight low temp "welding" rods.

Yet another update. I seem to come back around once a year or so with some news (and some of the same ol’ problems…). First, latest moves in renovation. I did a full replacement of the side liner vinyl. That was a total pain. Time consuming, problematic, unrewarding. Roof alignment is now...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Side liner replacement "nuts and bolts".

Golly, this is a bear of a task... I'm mostly done. The camper is still inside, on the floor. But all the side liner and trim is back on. Getting the liner to the proper tension was a total pain. Three different tries on each end. Too tight, too loose, too tight... Which means there are now...

Copy that. Say no more. I just bought one at Lowes and my wife will pick it up this afternoon. Good timing: Lowes is an hour and a half away, and she happens to be right there today only.

Just a regular hand-powered staple gun? Mine isn't cutting it. I dug a little deeper online elsewhere and found that the original work musta been done by a pneumatic stapler. Air powered tools are way badass, but probably overkill for me to own such a thing.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Side liner replacement "nuts and bolts".

Thanks, Poky and BBZ. Your responses gave me just the confidence I needed to start the disassembly. I propped a step ladder inside the camper and dropped the roof onto it. Roof load is spread across a few "rafters" with a piece of 2x2 on top of the ladder. It's about 6 inches lower than full...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Side liner replacement "nuts and bolts".

I've searched the archives and have an inquiry out to Marty at ATC. Nonetheless, I'm still a little lost on how to proceed. I bet there's some basic knowledge here. I've got a 1999 Hawk and a brand new sideliner from ATC. I want to join the two. The camper is in my garage, sitting on the...

Latest update... Years into it. First some stokage on where we've been in the last 8 months or so... In no particular order... And out of order, in terms of captions and photos... Big Horns, Wy Hoover Dam Mount Shasta Cochise Stronghold Death Valley, Lippincott Pass, Saline Valley City of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West "Gardner Sta Kool 780" for sealing Hawk roof?

For what its worth, I'm digging the StaCool coating. I've got leaks still, but they're not coming through the roof.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West "Gardner Sta Kool 780" for sealing Hawk roof?

I've got a 1999 Hawk with a leaky roof. Rather than trying to seal individual potential gaps, I'm sorely tempted to coat the whole dang thing with "Gardner Sta Kool 780". It's meant for exactly this task. It's some sort of "elastomeric siliconized" roof coating. Am I missing something? Should I...

I was getting the four-flash error code; Something wrong with the intake and exhaust. Karl asked for a photo of the ducting and venting and asked a few questions. None of that was conclusive. So he had me test the voltage at some little dots on the circuit board. I got 0 volts there. He was...

Hello all. I'm back home and back to working on the camper. I spent the last two months in Alaska while the camper lived under a tarp in Wydaho. Roof leak(s) are taking their toll. So that is my first project. Well, fixing the roof leak requires washing the roof, which requires water, which...

And here I was, thinking I know something... The Victron has got to be better; it has your name in it and it has an app. What more can one ask for?

Oh, and catching up on a question from way back in the beginning of page 1... Turns out that my Renogy battery did come with connector bolts. I was cleaning up some junk from the renovation and stumbled onto a little bag containing the two bolts, each with lock washers, that Renogy includes. Oops.

More progress, some answers, and more questions... We launch on a week-long work and play trip to Moab on Monday of this week. Ironing out the little things and getting others "good enough". I ordered this water pump from Amazon. Figured that it was worth a try for $12. Seems to do the job...

Also, I re-routed the intake and exhaust as per Vic Harder's recommendation. I haven't yet heard back from Karl at Westy Ventures, but it was an easy-enough fix that I just did it anyway. Certainly can't hurt. Also also, the fridge works. At least, it works on propane and 110. I haven't tried...

Plugging away... With more questions. First, on that aforementioned "system monitor"... I've gathered more info. One switch turns on and off the power to the water pump. The other "switch" prompts the "tests" that light up the LED banks. But, with the decal gone, I don't know what the lights...

Interesting observation on the intake/exhaust. First, they meet the camper wall in a Propex-approved fitting that nests the two lines at a prescribed separation. The whole thing can be moved down and the hoses can spiral down to it, if need be. But I don't have room for a straight-shot gentle...

After a wicked stormy February (read; tons of skiing, no camper projects...) and a busy March, I've renewed my renovation efforts. Spent the day yesterday catching up, with the help of my dad and another handy friend. Finished up the truck battery to house battery connection. I rerouted and...

Just spent a half day working on some of the aforementioned renovations. Mainly, I pulled out cabinet paneling to see what I'm working with. And then I strapped the big Renogy battery down under the couch. I worked on re-routing some cabling and securing various fasteners etc. Notably, through...

Oh, and also... who can shoot me straight on this AGM battery and the cold. I know that it'll lose charge faster in the cold, and I know that charging it when it is frozen (a state the liquids enter when charge and temp are both low, right?) is no good. But, what's the common-sense way to deal...

Alrighty... an update. I've secured some parts for electricity and heat. This collection of parts brings more questions than answers... I just got ahold of: Propex 2000 heater. And associated doodads that Karl at Westy Ventures said I'd need. Renogy 200ah AGM battery. Thing's giant. Weighs...

Holy moley, Vic Harder... I knew it was complicated, but I didn't know just how complicated. The good thing is that your explanation is clear as day, even to my simple brain. The math isn't as clear. But that'll come with some homework. Again, thanks for the link. That's what I'm looking for!

Good catch. See? I'm not that handy. I do value linguistic precision, and I know that I screwed that one up. I meant alternator.
