RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Winter Camping Tips

I was just using the camper last week in -5 degree F temps. I use the camper more in the winter than summer. I use a 5 gallon container for water. No way would I use the camper water system in winter. It would freeze up. I only use the heater when I'm awake inside the camper. It's too noisy...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swift shell on a new Ford Ranger

I have a 2020 Ford Ranger long bed with a Fleet on it. It has plenty enough power for me. I barely feel the weight when accelerating. I get 16.5 MPG, which isn't awesome.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Propane Alarm

I was getting false propane alarms in my Fleet with two 12 volt AGM batteries. I had the alarm unhooked. I recently switched to a single 100 Ah lithium BB. No more false alarms! Apparently, off gassing from the AGM batteries was setting off the alarm.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC, food and bears

I've backpacked in the southern Winds out of Lander and Big Sandy several times. I've never had a problem with bears. I have seen bear tracks though. I carry bear spray and use an Ursack. That area is within the Grizzly's range, but I don't believe there have been any attacks on people in that...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Serious Bed Cracks at Front Eye Bolts - New Rangers

Thanks for documenting your fix for your Ranger, Jack. You should be good to go now. The Ranger is a great vehicle for mounting a Fleet on. I like mine. Hopefully, the aftermarket will come up with a better mounting solution, so everything doesn't have to be custom made. I doubt FWC will do...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

Yep. You need 2 breakers then. Thanks for the explanation, Rando.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

I put the breaker in the engine bay by the battery. You should only need one breaker for each continuous length of wire. You'd have to put the breaker in the camper by the charger in order to step down 4 to 6 gauge. That should work fine.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

Cool. I think that charger will be especially nice in the winter when there isn't a lot of sun. One thing though. 6 gauge wire is the largest size that the Victron charger will accept. The 4 gauge would have to be stepped down somehow.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

My alternator puts out 105 amps at 750 rpm and 170 amps at 2250 rpm. I ran 6 gauge welding cable from the truck battery to the charger and the charger to the camper battery, and used 60 amp circuit breakers like Victron recommends. I think the Victron Smart 12/12/30 DC-DC charger will be OK with...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

I recently installed a 100 Ah BB and a Victron DC-DC charger. I have a 160 Watt solar panel as well. With the camper battery down 20% and the truck (2020 Ford Ranger) running, I'm getting 35 amps of charging according to my Victron battery monitor. I'm assuming that's 30 amps from the charger...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Serious Bed Cracks at Front Eye Bolts - New Rangers

This is what I did. Used 1/4"x 3" steel bar. It's overlapping near a frame support, which is toward the front of the truck. I hope this works!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Serious Bed Cracks at Front Eye Bolts - New Rangers

I have a 2020 Ranger with a Fleet. I did the install of the plates on mine, and they look the same as yours. I have no cracks in the bed so far, but I will keep a close eye on it. I think I will be making some longer plates that will span both of those supports in the bed, maybe out of some...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West "Cons" for choosing a heated Battle Born 100ah battery?

I went with one BB heated 100 ah battery. Just got it installed. I camp out in below zero temps occasionally here in Wyoming, so I wanted a reliable battery heating system. You can't run the furnace all the time in those temps, because it would take too much propane. The furnace would run...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

Yes, my Fleet is a 2017. I called IOTA and they said the LifePo "dongle" did not work with the IQ4 charger, because it already has the multi-stage charging built in. I don't know if the built in charging profile is OK for Li batteries. It's probably not optimal.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

I did find out that I have an IOTA DLS-30/IQ4 charger/converter in my Fleet. And that the LifePo module/dongle is not compatible with this charger. Will this charger work OK with a LifePo battery? I'm in the process of installing a single 100Ah BB battery. Getting at that charger in my Fleet is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fleet furnace removal; diesel heater installed

Sounds interesting. I'd like to hear about how well it works. I've been thinking upgrading the heater in my 2017 Fleet to a Propex heater. I camped out in 10 below zero temps this last winter. I really want reliable heat in those conditions.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Long Time lurker, need some advice for my 2017 Tacoma/Fleet shell combo

I upgraded my turnbuckles to forged stainless steel ones, and I use a single lock nut on each one. They do not loosen now. You gotta keep the turnbuckles tight. Your camper shouldn't move much on a Tacoma as long the turnbuckles are tight, but not too tight.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Long Time lurker, need some advice for my 2017 Tacoma/Fleet shell combo

The Tacoma should have steel bars in the bed that center the camper. That's how a dealer installs a new camper. Does your Tacoma not have those bars? The camper should not move sideways with those bars in there. I had a 2010 Tacoma with my Fleet in it. I now have a 2020 Ford Ranger with the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Couldn't stop going down hill in snow.

I had KO2's on my Tacoma. I think they're terrible on ice and snow. They may be OK when they're new, but they harden with age. For winter, I now have General Grabber Arctic studded tires. Much better. I live in the mountains where it snows quite a bit, so it's worth having studded snow tires.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

I think I'll hold off on changing to a MPPT charger for now. I am going to change to a DC-DC Victron charger for the truck to house battery charging. I also want one of those Victron Smart Shunts. From what I understand, the Iota charger/converter that came with the FWC will work fine for...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Single LiFePo4 Battery or Two LiFePo4 Batteries in Hawk?

The Zamp solar charge controller in my '17 Fleet does have a LiFePo4 setting. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 100Ah LiFePo4 battery, and am trying to figure out what all needs to be changed. It looks like I can use the current solar charge controller.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Altimeter watches

I have a Garmin Instinct Solar. I love it. I use it track all my hikes, bike rides, skis. It has a built in altimeter that works with the GPS tracking turned off. You can turn off the GPS to extend the battery life between chargings.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Furnace won’t spark

I recently had a problem with the furnace not lighting in my 2017 Fleet.. This was in snowy below zero temp weather at 6500 feet. It randomly started working. I thought maybe some snow blew into the exhaust vent and caused the furnace not to light. I have no idea. One thing I learned is to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ExploreDesert: Picacho

Nice trip report! Brings back memories. I lived at the Picacho State Recreation Area back in the early 80’s. My Dad was the park superintendent. Also, I worked at the Picacho Mine when it was just starting up again in the early 80’s. Haven’t been back there in 35 years.
