Type of Shell?

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and fairly new to a used FWC camper. I bought a 2003 shell model and the wife and I absolutely love getting out there and using it in all conditions.

My question is: are there different models of shells i.e. a Hawk or Ranger shell? The paperwork I got from the previous owner doesnt indicate what model it is. Just curious!

The questions would be what type of truck do you have the shell model on? Does it hang out onto your tailgate?

Each model of camper has a shell model also. Just depends on the size as to which one is which.

Hi Ben,

Its sitting on a '05 Toyota Tundra Std. Cab Longbed. The original owner had it on a T100. It doesn't hang out past the bed or over the tailgate. I guess I thought that the shell was a one size fits all configuration differing only in length.

A side note here... I really applaud that both you and Stan can be courteous and respectful of each other on this forum. That is a refreshing change of pace! pete

If your truck is a real long bed as in 8', then the shell model that you have is a Grandby Shell.

If your bed is only 6.5' long then it would be a Hawk Shell.

You are basically right about one shell model just made different lengths and widths depending on the truck that it is going on.

If you can close the tailgate with the camper in it, its not a grandby..

Ben, the bed is indeed an eight footer.

Tomas, the tailgate doesnt come close to shutting, 3-4 inches off. Now I can post knowledgeably about my shell!! I tried to upload some pix last nite and ran into technical difficulty. I'll try again tonite after I go thru the howz-it-works section. Some of the probs are a new computer with the OS Vista.

Is the picture of the Grandby mounted on the light green Chevy pickup, about 1970 vintage I believe, an extended bed version? It's the first picture in the first batch upper LH corner. I'm trying to get an idea what an extended bed version Grandby would look like on my standard cab 1977 Chev.

I checked out that Grandby when the owner had it for sale. Unfortunately he changed his mind about selling the day after I looked at it. Anyway to answer your question it is an extended bed. 2002 or '03 vintage I believe.

Hey Buzz

Yep, that New Grandby pictured on the restored 1970 Chevy does have the extended cab-over bed.

I think it looks good and works just fine, even on the standard cab trucks.

From inside the truck cab you probably won't even be able to see the cab-over portion of the camper.

9 out of 10 orders we take these days, the customer goes with the extended cab-over bed option.

Thicker mattress, looks nicer on the ext.cab and crew cab trucks, better resale value down the road, and less bed in the camper floor area at night.

I can't see any reason not to order the ext. cab-over bed, except it does make the roof a little harder to lift. We have a couple things available to help with lifting the roof it you found that you needed a little extra "ummpphh".
