MOAB — Some vintage Detroit horsepower that the late author Edward Abbey bought himself as a 60th birthday treat now promises to nourish a new generation of writers and readers in the desert he memorialized.

A 1975 red convertible Cadillac Eldorado that Abbey drove in his final years has made its way to Moab after changing hands among a circuit of book dealers. The latest caretaker is Back of Beyond Bookstore owner Andy Nettell, who is auctioning the V-8 gas guzzler partly to benefit the Confluence Literary Festival in Moab.

Nettell has "leased" the car from a Colorado book dealer, making payments on a handshake since he brought it to Moab for the 2008 Confluence festival, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Abbey's "Desert Solitaire," his memoir of life as an Arches National Park ranger and man-about-Moab.

Nettell plans to split the proceeds with the car's Colorado co-owner, Tony Delcavo, giving a couple thousand to this month's conference and reimbursing his store for the past two years of underwriting the event.

Nettell's first week-long auction on eBay failed to attract the minimum bid. He relisted it with a new minimum, with the auction set to end about 10:30 a.m. today.

By today's standards, the Eldorado was a curious trophy for the Thoreau of Western American environmental literature. But Abbey was a man of contradictions who wrote of tossing beer cans on the roadside because the road itself was the real litter, said an old friend from Abbey's time in the early 1970s as a writer-in-residence at the University of Utah.

"It was so contrary to his whole interest as an environmentalist," said Ernie Bulow, a Gallup, N.M., writer. "That thing got 10 miles a gallon."
