The prices I've found locally are nuts so I've been researching online for foam. I didn't see any good foam suppliers listed in a search of this site so I figured I'd post what I found to be the cheapest so far. Hopefully its useful to others down the road and if someone knows of a better place clue us all in!

Acquiring foam is on my to do list. Talked to Ben (at ATC and formerly of FWC) a couple weeks ago and his wisdom was: "buy local". Shipping is nuts. I suppose he's right.

Anyway, I couldn't find anything on the internet. Just what you found, nothing more. Very rare that I do this, but I went to the yellow pages and found a local shop to check out. I called them and will end up down there in the next few weeks.

Don't forget your local marine supply and upholstery shops. These should be more prevalent in your neck of the woods...

Foam is crazy expensive. I was in Costco the other day and they 3" Queen size memory foam for about $180. I don't know if this can be cut and reused. Also check out Walmart. They have foam futons that can be cut to size. Just remove the cover. Don't get locked into a one source mind set. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I don't know what folks consider "expensive" to be in regards to foam... but I had this company make the foam cushions for the bed mod in my Hawk and they did a nice job/sent me exactly what I ordered. As you'll see...they have many choices of foam to choose from for RV's and boats/etc.

I called local upholstery shops and got recommended to a local foam shop. They were nice enough but 2-3X the cost of that foam source I linked for comparable densities. With free shipping on that place its hard to turn away from that.

Yikes, $500 if I went with new foam on the entire upper mattress from these guys (not planning to but its my pricing point comparison).

I ended up going to costco for a 3" memory mattress and I will cut it to fit. It was marked down $20 iirc and seems to be the best quality of other big retailers.

I just checked on this a few days ago. The Wal-Mart near me has 4" queen size memory foam mattress toppers for $130. That's $6.50 per square foot. Does anyone know how well this stuff would work for making seat cushions?

Yeah I had been wondering about those toppers as well. Didn't know how well they'd work solo (ie without being on a mattress), how easy to cut, and weight difference verse standard foam.

For seat cushions 4" would be pretty thick, I think 3" is more common, but if you're cool with the thickness then is just a matter of those questions I just asked...

Edit: Looking on wally worlds page: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4569413 looks like they do 1.5" memory foam and 2.5" high density foam. Density looks to be around 3lb/ft^3 which isn't that much higher than the 2.8lb/ft^3 premium stuff, I think 2lb/ft^3 tends to be the mid line stuff and if I had to guess is probably what is in our rigs??? So you'd be looking about about 10lb more in the camper with something like this. No idea if it cuts well.

I don't know if I would use memory foam for the whole mattress. Better test the foam first. I have a memory foam mattress plus a memory foam topper for my home bed and the thing about pure memory foam I would think it would compress completely if you put your elbow on it above wood. The topper I know would compress totally flat if put on wood at pressure points. Most memory foam beds have a layer of memory foam on top of foam foundation. I can tell you it is the best sleep and I don't think I could ever get a good sleep on another bed, especially since I have to sleep on my side or back. You might look into a queen thermarest pad. I believe at one time they made a 3" version for Van camping.

Yeah I got concerned about that real quick yesterday when I saw a topper in the store and saw how small a box it was compressed into. I think I'll stick with the standard foams.

The size of the package is not an indicator of how thick or how firm it will be once unpacked. They are vacuum sealed to reduce the size until ready to use. Standard foam could be compressed just as small.

Call me skeptical but I don't see how I could cram the current 76x48" mattress in my camper into a square box 1.5' on each side, let alone a full king size version of it.

thermarest dreamtime and put carpet up there under the pads to make keep everything from moving, tons of storage and the bed would be sweet.

When we purchased our camper I saw the 1/2 thickness bed pads that allowed the sleeping bags, etc to be kept up on the bed and with the extra length bed it allows all our bags and I keep two thermarest LE pads up there too. When I am by myself I sometimes use both and it is a dream. What I noticed when we purchased our camper was that the density of the bed foam was the same for both thickness so there was no reason to get the thicker pads. They are firm and no way could you push through to the board with a elbow. I also extended the pull out so we can sleep either direction, when I go camping with my brother we sleep along the truck axis so we don't have to climb over each other in the night.

I bought mine at the local flea market here in Roseville area (denio's). Way cheaper if you ask me. I checked the price online (add shipping), upholstery shop, and marine shop but they asked to much for it.

For those wondering, If I'm not mistaken, I seem to remember someone telling me that foam could cut nicely with an electric carving knife.
Probably makes a very accurate cut.

Yeah I actually did a long pull out for mine too (just finished it) previously there was just the 4' cab over part. I had considered doing a 3" mattress on the top instead of 4" to allow bedding to stay up there but that would definitely require buying foam for the whole thing. Where as right now we're considering just getting some firm foam for the slider part and leaving the normal mattress alone (unless they fell grossly different, then we'd replace the rest).
