If you're looking to build a flatbed camper, this is your lucky day. I'm regrettably abandoning my project of building the perfect camper for a trek through Mexico, and selling the truck.

The base is a brand new 2017 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab Z71, broken in right with 2000 miles on the odometer. It was selected because it has the highest allowable payload of any small pickup, 1581lbs. The Z71 has the nicest interior: leather and cloth adjustable heated seats, a six speaker stereo with Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

On the mechanicals, it's got a V6 that's rated to tow 7000lbs. I picked the 2017 because the 8 speed tansmission has a lower 1st gear than the previous models that doesn't hunt even when laden with a big load. Although the Colorado has a diesel option, the gas model was used so that fuel availability down south wouldn't be a problem. It's 4wd with the G80 mechanical locking differential in the back.
Modifications:

  • XP Camper custom flatbed
  • BFG KO2's 10-ply E rated offroad tires
  • ICON Level 5 shocks
  • Custom Deaver rear leaf pack +1100lbs
  • Airlift air bags with custom installed filler ports in flatbed
  • Twin ARB Air compressor with 3 gallon tank for adjusting the airbags and tires

If you put a FWC Fleet Flatbed on this vehicle, you'll be the only person to ever do so under GVWR. I've weighed the rear axle at 2130lbs and it's rated for 3500lbs.

Asking $35,000

The truck is located in Modesto, California.

If anyone is considering a flatbed FWC, this is a really good deal! I have a similar setup on a Tacoma and couldn't come close to repeating it for this price. Realistically you will be over GVWR, but by less than on other options.

Yeah, and I'm not going to list it at a lower price here, I'm just going to expand to other venues like Craigslist and Ebay Motors. At this price, even people looking for work trucks will take notice.

I have a 2017 Z71 and love it, though mine only has the 6 speed with the Duramax Diesel. I think this is truly a unique opportunity for someone looking to build a FWC rig. I wonder though since it is a flatbed could you run something other than a flatbed fleet on it and get a little more width?

I still have the original bed if somebody wants it for a slide-in. Still a really good deal without the $8000 flatbed on it.
