Gifford-Pinchot in late July

Meeting family for a little camping in the Gifford Pinchot NF in WA state the last week in July. The drive up from San Jose, CA is about 13 hours. Thought we'd stop for the night somewhere between Yreka, CA and Medford, OR for the night going up. There's Bear Creek CG in the Klamath NF and Camp Creek by Iron Gate Reservoir that are free. Looking for any additional suggestions.

John, go up to Mt Ashland. There's a small campground just pasted the ski area, then a nice shelter at Grouse Gap, which is another mile or so. Much cooler than lower elevations. Dry camp only.
