I was lucky enough to see him play in 1973 in Lubbock, Texas. His band, the Earl Scruggs Review if I remember correctly, had two of his sons, Vassar Clements, and someone else. He was a great musician that bridged the generations.
RIP Earl.
My main exposure to Earl Scruggs banjo (as far as I knew) was his playing the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies (with partner Lester Flatt, and they appeared as themselves in at least one episode of that classic sitcom),
...and Foggy Mountain Breakdown -- and I didn't know that was his work.
Until his death brought the coverage of him this week I never realized how important his contribution was. I don't think you can go wrong with bluegrass banjo.
